wlan0 not working

Unread postby mbonamusa » Fri Jul 20, 2018 6:13 pm

I'm using an XU4 board with:
kernel: 4.14.10-96
ubuntu: 16.04.3 LTS
wifi dongle: wifi 0 module

I can't connect to wifi network. networking.service says:
systemd[1]: Starting Raise network interfaces...
ifup[665]: /sbin/ifup: waiting for lock on /run/network/ifstate.wlan0
systemd[1]: networking.service: Start operation timed out. Terminating.
systemd[1]: Failed to start Raise network interfaces.
systemd[1]: networking.service: Unit entered failed state.
systemd[1]: networking.service: Failed with result 'timeout'.

My Interfaces File:
/etc/network/interfaces:
#wifi
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auto wlan0
allow-hotplug wlan0
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
wpa-conf /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.28.2
netmask 255.255.255.0

My wpa_supplicant File:
/etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf:
network={
ssid="my_wifi_network"
#psk="my_wifi_pass"
psk=7b5f7dc84949bac2eba7a1e6584d59fb33347c46022bf56e2787c80a18f53b82
}

When I try to connect directly with wpa_supplicant, it doesn't work either:
"wpa_supplicant -d -i wlan0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicnat.conf":

Few times I've seen wlan0 connects to wifi network but it doesn't receive Ip from DHCP. Then I execute "dhclient -v wlan0" and I get:
...
DHCPDISCOVER on wlan0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 11 (xid=0xbe86ab79)
dhclient[820]: No DHCPOFFERS received.
dhclient[820]: No working leases in persistent database - sleeping.

I've tried 2 different wifi networks available from my office with the same results.
I've tested different XU4 boards and wifi 0 modules with the same result.
I also tested with another wifi dongle (TPlink with atheros chipset) with the same result.
Finally I've tried the same on a latest xu4 ubuntu 18.04 image and all is the same!!!

I need help!

I'm using WiFi Module 0 on my XU4 Ubuntu 18.04 Mate image to write this message.
It works out of the box if I use the GUI network manager on the right top corner on Mate desktop.

If you prefer using the command line, try nmcli instead of the old fashion wpa_supplicant.

I'm using the XU4 board headless, because it needs to work in an unnattended place and all network configuration is managed from /etc/network/interfaces.
If some user connects the wifi0 module then XU4 must connect to wifi network, and if user does not connect wifi0 module then XU4 must connect to ethernet network.

This works fine with your old image based on ubuntu 15.04 and kernel 3.10.

Hi,
No, I did not tried nmcli. I'm always used /etc/network/interfaces in my headless systems. If I have to use network-manager then I'll need to change a lot of things in my system.

But, the question is: In this image kernel-ubuntu versions, is wlan0 not connecting to any wifi network because I'm using /etc/network/interfaces and wpa_supplicant? Ifyes, then I need to change obligatorily to network-manager.

Now, I'm using a headless board with a web page configuration. In this web page users can configure its IP, mask, gateway, DNS, DHCP, eth or wifi, etc. When they save the configuration, the system stores the data in the /etc/network/interfaces and then execute systemctl restart networking.service.

How can I manage this using nmcli?

Thank you

Maybe you don't have the necessary firmware for your wlan. network/interfaces should still work. nmcli still uses wpa supplicant as backend.
What does the wpa supplicant log say?

I've been making some tests and suddenly it works with /etc/network/interfaces for 5 days without any problem. I'm a little confused.
I've tested on a new board and it also works.
I don't know but perhaps it was a router problem... I'm a little confused.

If I find some clue I tell you.

Thank you!
