[SOLVED] WiFi Module 5BK not working on XU4

Post by tysonian »

Greetings, I recently purchased Odroid boards for a few projects. I bought an XU4 with OGST case, an Odroid go, and an H3+. I purchased (3) of the WiFi Module 5BK's for each build. I built the XU4 using an image based on Batocera ES V5.25 and everything works as it should, except I have no Wi-Fi or Bluetooth capabilities. First, I tried to swap the dongle with one of the other ones I purchased with no change. Then I took the dongle and tested it in my Odroid Go, and it worked as intended and was plug-and-play. I thought there might be an issue with the image I used, so I downloaded the latest official Batocera release, flashed it to a card clean with no other files or features added, and got the same results when I booted it up. I am able to enable Wi-Fi from the menu, but it does not find any networks. Same story with bluetooth pairing. The ethernet adapter on the board works as intended and I'm able to connect to the machine using ssh.

In addition to the testing above, I've tried the following:
I used the ifconfig commend to see if there was a wifi adapter listed, there are none shown.
I used the dmesg commend to look at devices and drivers. The dongle is plugged into the back port on the board which I believe is the only USB2.0 port. I see a driver for 802.11ac NIC by Realtek which I believe is the correct driver for the dongle.

I thought I could manually add the driver for the 5BK that published by hardkernel in case there had been an update or fix, but Batocera doesn't have the get command and I don't know how to go about getting the driver in (or if that's even the proper solution).

I believe Batocera OS developers didn't include the RTL8821CU device driver and/or firmware in their OS image.
Post a question to their own forum.

If you want to run a basic hardware test with your XU4 and 5BK module, try our Ubuntu OS image first.
It should work out of the box.

That worked, thank you! I had tried with Ubuntu but the version I grabbed was older and didn't work, the image you linked did, I appreciate it! Now I just need to figure out how to build it so I have support for the OGST display, but that's a post for another forum ;)
