XU4 keeps restarting when boooting with anything connected to USB

Post by brunovianna »

Like the title says. I just bought a Xu4 and installed a Ubuntu minimal 20.04 image.
If I boot it with a keyboard or the Odroid wifi dongle connected, it just keeps restarting in the middle of the boot.
If I plug them after the boot, they work, although the wifi seems intermittent.

Any idea of how to debug this? Or should I just ask for a replacement?

Thanks

It looks like your power supply is too weak.
What PSU do you use, and is there any chance to try another?

I 'm using a 5V, 4A PSU that I bought from the same distributor :-/
So I ruled that out from the beginning.

I don't have any other 4 amp PSU, but I guess I could try with a 2.5A raspi supply?

Raspi supply won't fit. It's a USB connector, right?

MY theory comes from the fact that XU4 draws significant current when booting. If you have USB devices that are also exceptionally power hungry, that might cause the faulty PSU to overload. It is a bit stretched hypothesis, but hey, don't blame me, I'm the hardware guy.

Just to make things clear, is your keyboard also wireless? If not, then I doubt it's a power supply issue, as standard keyboard draws negligible current. If it's not one of those RGB glowing things.

Have you tried sticking something else to USB and seeing if problem persists during boot time?
Have you checked dmesg for anything suspicious usb-related reported?

Hm, on the other hand, if your wi-fi dongle is not stable, that might actually indicate some USB-related problems.

Did you flash "ubuntu-20.04-5.4-minimal-odroid-xu4-20210928.img.xz" image with Etcher?

Can you tell us which distributor sold it?
A couple of distributors have sold their own PSU instead of official one.

Does your 5V/4A PUS have the same label of the official one?

Before anything, thanks a lot for you support!

Yes, the keyboard is wired. Not much current.
The distributor is https://www.kubii.es/ (based in France).

The PSU is not original. I'll bring a multimeter on Monday to check it. Besides the unloaded voltage, is there anything specific I should measure? I don't have access to an oscilloscope.

I should say that I got the board with a fan, but I have also done the tests with the fan disconnected.

Today I managed to get to the prompt with the keyboard connected once (but just once). I also managed to get to the prompt with the odroid wifi dongle once (with the fan off). It is an erratic behaviour. Let's see if the multimeter can explain something...

Aha, so the AC adapter is definitely the suspect now. From my experience, barely any wall wart without a brand delivers declared current.
Even if it does deliver 4A in some specific circumstances, have a look at the graph I posted above. The current draw changes are quick, and some low quality PSUs cannot keep up with these changes.

Disconnecting a fan saves you about 100mA, that was a good idea to test. If it somewhat improved the situation (XU4 at least booted twice), I'd dig into that more.

Due to the quick nature of current changes there is not much you can measure using a multimeter... Nevertheless, inspecting 5V rail on XU4 while it is running could give some hints.
Just be very careful not to short anything while performing these measurements - GPIO pins don't tolerate anything above 1,8V.
Perhaps measuring two outer pins on UART connector is the safest way to proceed.

The best thing you could do is to test your XU4 with a decent 5V power supply and see if the problem persists. Look around your house, you may have a compatible PSU somewhere.

Ultimately you want to prove the PSU is faulty and demand replacement, or prove that the problem is not related to PSU at all.

If you have a DMM, keep measuring voltage between Pin#1 and Pin#2 of 30pin GPIO port in the booting process.
https://wiki.odroid.com/odroid-xu4/hard ... connectors

It must be stable at 4.8Volt at least.
