[Resolved] My second disk also got bad sector. is it due to JMicron SATA controller?

Hi,

My first hard disk got bad sectors and click sound after using it on HC1 for 1 month. Then I send it for replacement and get another brand New harddisk. Now the second hard disk also got some bad sector and same click sound. I have doubt on the JMicron SATA to USB controller used in HC1 for currupting my hard disks
Is my doubt is correct? Did anyone also face the same issue?

We've shipped over 20K of HC1/HC2 units and we've not seen many bad sector issues so far.
Do you use an encrypted file system? or pure EXT4?

I am using EXT4 file system over an encrypted disk.
For me, it doesn't make sense to leave all your data in unencrypted disk and wait for someone to use it.

Can you give me a guide or link to learn how to build a encrypted disk to reproduce the issue?
We have near zero experience of encrypted storage.

Sorry, we have not tested yet.

We tried using openmediavault-luksencryption 3.0.5 plugin on OMV 4.1.19-1. Installed that from OMV - Plugins menu.
But we couldn't start the test since it couldn't find the disk that is installed. Maybe it is because we're not familiar with that plugin.

Could you tell us how you set up your OMV environment? Then we're going to test as soon as you tell.

I doubt, that software or SATA bridge problems can lead to bad sectors on hdd. Power supply problems on other hand...

Hi Joshua,

This disk you want to encrypt using openmediavault-luksencryption should not have any mounted partition. Usually, partitions are auto-mounted. So, you have to unmount it. But I always used disks without any partition. Disks with filesystem will not be detected by Luks plugin.
You can also create Luk encrypted disk in any of the Linus distribution. Sometimes I use Ubuntu for encrypting the disk.

I also doubt on SATA bridge controller. I never faced any issue using the encrypted disk on my Ubuntu Laptop. I faced a couple of other problems with the disk which I think SATA controller is responsible. like I never get file transfer speed more than ~18Mb/s when I copy files between my external drive (connected to USB) and internal drive (connected through SATA)

Let me know if you need more information on this.

I run LUKS encrypted disks with all my HC1s, never had a problem because of it. And why should it, the hardware does not care, a block of data is a block of data, encrypted or not.

But as a wild guess, if it's a shingled disk, stuff is written to the disk and while the new data is still being "compacted" by the disk it is improperly shutdown (viewtopic.php?f=97&t=29069) or there is a power fluctuation due to unstable power supply, and naturally the chance is high if some sectors are (still) in flight this leads to data loss.
What harddisk model is it?
Can you provide the SMART data?
Do you do a proper shutdown?

I could start the test with your help.
I installed HGST 4TB HDD which is LUKS encrypted. When I unlocked that encrypted HDD, the device file /dev/dm-0 appears. Then I started dd test using that file.
The dd command is dd if=/dev/dm-0 of=/dev/null bs=32M. It loops infinitely.

Here is an update on this issue.
I am using a third disk now. In the last two disks, whenever I run e2fsck tool I always see lots of errors in Plex server home folder ($PLEX_HOME/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/), which is in my SATA disk. So, this time in the third disk I created two partitions one for my plex home and media and other for my backup. I only encrypted the partition used for my backup. So now, most of the read/write operation is happening in a un-encrypted partition. End-result, till now there is no error file system error or bad-sector. Although, it has been just a fifth day of using this disk. I am still want to wait for more results. Last two disk were frequently making click sound. But this time, there is no click sound in the hard disk

I am using 5V/6A Power Supply. Which I purchased from https://www.hardkernel.com along with the board. I don't know how to check my power supply I don't have any spare power supply to test. But I have a Digital Multimeter if someone can guide me on how to test the power supply with a multimeter. I can do that.
I was using brand new Seagate 4TB Barracuda SATA 6GB/s 128MB Cache 2.5-Inch 15mm Internal Bare/OEM Hard Drive (ST4000LM024). I always do a proper shutdown.

BTW, what transfer speed you are getting when you are transferring files from a wifi connected system to your NAS (HC1) system.?

From personal experience, I have one 5TB 2.5" Seagate that developed bad sectors after a few hours of use -- I did a whole disk overwrite with dd and since then it has been stable.
Check SMART Attribute "192 Power-Off_Retract_Count" -- does it increase, if yes when?
Elsewhere people are unhappy when they use these disks in a NAS, they don't last for long, e.g. https://old.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/co ... b/eizgl80/

But this is all wild guessing, can someone here report long time experiences of running the 15mm 3-5TB 2.5" as NAS with an Odroid?

But I have a Digital Multimeter if someone can guide me on how to test the power supply with a multimeter. I can do that.
Carefully measure the voltage with a DMM between +5V VBUS and GND on the USB 2.0 host.
It must be stable at 4.75~5.25volt while the system boot.

Except for the attributes like running times, Power-Off_Retract_Count and Load_Cycle_Count raw values are increased by 4.
But I just realized that this test performed not infinitely. :shock:
The dd command exited after one loop. So this performed only 4 TB read to /dev/null.

I'll try again 2.5 inch 5TB Seagate HDD with HC1.

Before the test, we've just got this interesting information.

Many of heavy load tests with ODROIDs. ;)
I don't know either why the SMART values corrupted.

But, actually, IMO, :) the one thing that we could recognize is that it seems HGST one is better for an aspect of maintaining its performance than the Seagate one.
Not a big difference in running time between them.

That two product has different specifications each other but it is in the sight of stability that HDD has itself.

The values appear to be truthful, not wrong.

It is true that our HDDs could have experienced various harsh conditions for the many of tests including unstable power supply, or unstable communication with developing boards. :)

I always run 5v 6A power supply without any external hard disk. 5v 6A is more than enough for HC1.

The values "5V 6A" alone do not say anything about quality, meaning stability of 5V under fast load changes (e.g. 0% CPU load to 100% CPU load).

One common problem with SBCs is crappy power supplies that claim 5V but actually drop lower than 5V for a tiny amount of time under load changes and so crash the CPU or cause the disk to trigger emergency parking ("oh my, power is going away, I need to retract the head to protect it", leading to bad sectors...) -- that's why Odroid here usually asks first "is it the power supply from use? Did you measure 5V stability with a DMM?", because resellers like to sell their own 5V power supplies to increase their profit margin...

Our official 5V/6A PSU has stable output voltage at 5.1~5.3volt. It wouldn't be lower than 4.8Volt with full load of 6Amp.
But it is worth to measure the USB VBUS(+5V) if you have a DMM. It should be 4.8volt at least in the boot process.

Today I checked the HC1 external port with DMM. I put a stress of 100% on CPU for 2 Minutes. Most of the time the voltage is 4.8xxV. During the 2 Minute period, there was a couple of time voltage was 4.7xx and one times it reached to 4.5xx.

Do you think the culprit is PSU?

It must be higher than 4.75Volt.
What is the voltage when you measure on DC plug directly (without connecting to ODROID)?
Which DMM do you use? It is worth to check the DMM tolerance.

DC plug is showing 5.18x constantly.
I am using Tacklife DM05 electronic tester, purchased from Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B072PVKP4M). I am not sure about the tolerance, but the product details page is showing: DC Voltage: 600mV/6V/60V/600V±(0.5%+3), 1000V ±(0.5%+3).
During load, when I check my Laptop or Router USB port, it shows 5.1xV

I received the PSU replacement. And I checked the voltage on new PSU on CPU 100% load. It never goes below 4.65V.

Two days after replacing my PSU, my third disk is now showing 32 bad sectors :-(

I formatted the disk with NTFS and try to fix the bad sectors with Windows 10 chkdsk and now the disk is showing 192 sectors :-(

Look like the PSU be one of the factors but are there might be other root cause as well.

Currently, I am in discussion for raise a RMA request for this disk. But I am afraid of using the fourth disk on my HC1. Removing the 'Resolved' flag from the thread.

    It looks like the Jmicron controller doesn't came along very well with this type of Seagate hard disks if I read your posts, I have western digital hard disks connected and they run very well, it's just a theory

    Being clueless on the disk issue. I finally bought another MC1 board and using my fourth Seagate hard disk on it. If everything works fine it means there is some unknown problem in my previous board.

    Till now I have not seen any issue. My new hard disk is healthy.
    I know right now, I don't have any way to pinpoint the root cause of the issue in my old HC1. But the result of my old HC1 and the new one clearly shows that there is an issue with my old HC1. Can I return my old HC1 and raise a refund request?

    Ok. Please return the old HC1 for our investigation and we will refund immediately.

    I use a couple (4TB) and haven't had any issues. One for well over a year. It seems (from SMART) that the raw/uncorrected read error is high but I think this might be normal for this type of drive (SMR). No uncorrectable errors and no bad sectors. They are used for media and backups.
