HC2 - Hard drive not recognized

Unread postby odroidinc » Fri May 25, 2018 11:17 pm

Q: unfortunately my WD-Red 2.0TB is not been recognized by my Odroid HC-2.
What I tried:
$ sudo apt update
$ sudo apt upgrade
$ sudo apt dist-upgrade
$ sudo apt install linux-image-xu3
When I enter the command:
$ sudo lshw -C disk
It shows me literally no devices. Also I tried to use parted, but this only shows me the inserted SDCard.
Can you help me with that issue?

- First, if your HDD is physically mounted properly, the LED light by the sata drive connector should be on. Either a solid light, or blinking if there is data transfer. If that is working, then, you may need to mount with a command.
Something like this $ sudo mount /dev/sda1 /media or you may do an internet search for "how to mount a HDD on linux" or something similar.

- unfortunately, I tried to enter exactly this command to a script which runs on startup. This has the effect, that the Board isn't starting anymore - lights are flashing but I can't connect to the Board via SSH anymore, so I guess something is going wrong. I also waited about an hour to see if it just takes some time, but nothing happened either.

Can you help with this issue?

Code: Select all
fdisk -l /dev/sda

where "sda" is your hdd

can be "sdb"..sdc..etc

but should be sda
command should ran be as root user

you may also have to format the drive to a linux partition or a ntfs partition..
depending on how you want to go about the file system you want to utilize..

refer to this link you should see the chip detecting the drive in the lsusb and lsusb -t

viewtopic.php?f=99&t=31131

you should see something like this if your hardware is ok

root@odroid:~# lsusb
Bus 006 Device 002: ID 0bda:8153 Realtek Semiconductor Corp.
Bus 006 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub

Bus 004 Device 002: ID 152d:0578 JMicron Technology Corp. / JMicron USA Technology Corp.
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub

Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
root@odroid:~# lsusb -t
/: Bus 06.Port 1: Dev 1, Class=root_hub, Driver=xhci-hcd/1p, 5000M
|__ Port 1: Dev 2, If 0, Class=Vendor Specific Class, Driver=r8152, 5000M

/: Bus 04.Port 1: Dev 1, Class=root_hub, Driver=xhci-hcd/1p, 5000M
|__ Port 1: Dev 2, If 0, Class=Mass Storage, Driver=uas, 5000M

/: Bus 01.Port 1: Dev 1, Class=root_hub, Driver=exynos-ehci/3p, 480M

i underlined the 2 lines that matter.......if your seeing this or similar then your hardware is ok ..

if your not seeing the driver listed with the hdd connected then something is wrong...

I've got the same issue. WD RED 2TB is not being recognised.

Already wrote with the support, which gave me the most possible non useful answer: "It should work"

Steps I made to install the odroid:
1. Downloaded latest ubuntu xu4 image & flashed it on SD-Card
2. apt-get update && upgrade
3. apt-get dist-upgrade
4. apt-get install linux-image-xu3
5. apt-get install lshw

Neither with lsusb nor lsusb -t nor lshw nor lshw -C disk, the HDD is not being recognised. The green light on the board is on and haven't changed.
I've got 10 HC-2 Boards with 10 WD RED 2TB, none of them worked as expected.

Somehow this issue appears completely irregular, as sometimes it worked, but only to the point until, I configured to load the HDD on startup via /etc/fstab.

It's definitely not an user issue. Maybe it's about compatibility between the HC-2 and the WD RED.

I hope Hardkernel will fix that issue!

step 4 is not needed dist upgrade should have done this step

make shore your using an up to date image,,available from h-k wiki pages..for the xu4 ..the xu4 images work correctly with hc-1/2 etc..

if you have a serial uart..then i suggest using it to see if the board has booted and the kernel loaded..
ssh`ing should give you a terminal to work with using putty or a similar..ssh`ing program

what to do
re-flash your sd-card..
preliminarily setup procedure requires the board to boot on the first boot up and the shortly after that the blue led should go out as the rootfs has been expanded

remove power and then re-apply
it should now boot up now

with the drive connected code
Code: Select all
lsusb

you should see this..if not the usb to sata may well be faulty ,,however i dont think that several mc-2`s should all fail ..i think it is a user error of some description
viewtopic.php?f=99&t=31131#p224962

JMicron..should show up .in the list of attached and working device

if this is not working then you have a problem..

let`s establish that the hardware is working...

pls post the result of lsusb pls

if your using brand new drives then most likely they need to be initialized with a partition table weather it be ext4 or ntfs..etc..etc...

Hi. I have the exactly same problem. When I booted my ODROID HC-2 together with OMV and the HDD (WD Red, 2TB) the file system would not recognize it eventually. Well, trying to sort the problem out, after 3 days and multiple HDDs, I used a Samsung EVO SDD and everything worked like a charm! I would have never suggested power shortage, as I purchased the power supply suggested by the retailer. Anyways, now I am suggesting. Please enlighten me:

    - Does the WD Red work with the ODROID HC-2 and this power supply?
    - If not - how to change this? I actually do not want to hook the system with a SDD up!

Thanks already for taking your time and helping.

EDIT: For example, I just rebooted the ODROID after writing this and tried to find the drive with
Code: Select all
ls -al /dev/disk/by-uuid
and it wasn't appearing. Neither on OMV > File Systems :?

EDIT2: Okay, I can see (and access) the drive with
Code: Select all
fdisk /dev/sda
. I went through this to create a file system manually (d, delete partition; n, new partiton; then default (first sector 2048, last sector the last that I could use) and ended up with Created a new partition 1 of type 'Linux filesystem' and of size 1.8 TiB.. The second part, creating ext4 takes ages... Already did, when I hooked the HDD up in Windows and tried format there (+12hrs). Is this normal?
