emmc suddenly small

Unread postby dandelot » Fri Sep 21, 2018 1:08 am

A crash after a couple weeks solid boinc processing, 4 processes,
and now the 16 day old 64GB emmc (came with 18.04 installed) is
showing:

q9 345: df
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
udev 949188 0 949188 0% /dev
tmpfs 204244 6316 197928 4% /run
/dev/mmcblk0p2 4601504 4259420 310892 94% /
tmpfs 1021212 0 1021212 0% /dev/shm
tmpfs 5120 4 5116 1% /run/lock
tmpfs 1021212 0 1021212 0% /sys/fs/cgroup
/dev/mmcblk0p1 130798 17814 112984 14% /media/boot
tmpfs 204240 28 204212 1% /run/user/1001

(/ was 99% but I deleted thunderbird and libreoffice as I don't
use either on q9. Did sudo apt autoremove too.).
Oops. Just a few GB exist or available.
Something badly wrong here.
Suggestions how to get back to normal space?
Thanks in advance for any hints.

Install ncdu and see what it reports as disk usage

Well, this is odd. Have you rebooted as well?
I recommend hooking up the emmc to a linux pc and running fsck on it.

ncdu got this:

Well, that's a big emmc. I assume / is /dev/mmcblk0p2 which should be 40G, right?
Have you tried running fsck on it offline?

i have been tried doing this on my laptop on that usb3 emmcreader, it gave me some weird not encouraging warnings...
so i've been checked fstab and voila...

UUID=e139ce78-9841-40fe-8823-96a304a09859 / ext4 errors=remount-ro,noatime 0 1

it should be doing an check each startup or am i wrong?

no, fstab states that if errors are detected at runtime the filesystem should be remounted read-only to prevent corruption.
Try creating this file and reboot. It should run fsck on reboot:
Code: Select all
touch /forcefsck

Having a console/screen attached would help

Using the emmc reader/micro usb interface on my Ubuntu 18.04 desktop machine:
sudo fdisk -l
found the device(s).

sudo fsck -y /dev/sdc2
fixed problems.

Mounting (the one thing shows as two devices) df -k shows
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/sdc2 4601504 4204584 365728 92% /media/davea/rootfs
/dev/sdc1 130798 17814 112984 14% /media/davea/boot

Notice how small sdc2 iss.

Now, sudo fdisk -l reports:
Device Boot Start End Sectors Size Id Type
/dev/sdc1 2048 264191 262144 128M c W95 FAT32 (LBA)
/dev/sdc2 264192 122140672 121876481 58.1G 83 Linux

Well that looks full size.

So....how do I get the file system to know about all the space that fdisk -l reports?

mount
shows, (just the sdc2 line shown):

/dev/sdc2 on /media/davea/rootfs type ext4 (rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,block_validity,delalloc,barrier,user_xattr,acl,stripe=32753,uhelper=udisks2)

Well resize2fs seems to be the thing to do.
Yes.
sudo e2fsck -f /dev/sdc2
sudo resize2fs /dev/sdc2

Now it is, mounted:
/dev/sdc2 59981940 4214488 55558072 8% /media/davea/rootfs

I think all is well now. Now to put the emmc back on xu4!
Thanks for the suggestions.

Addendum: I'm pretty sure, now, that when the emmc arrived last month it had the small file system
and needed resize2fs run. And I just did not notice. My bad.
Anyway: running boinc again now! with full size file system.

I hadn't caught that it was smaller than the partition. You should use df -h to display sizes in human-readable terms.

I had the same resize problem with both an eMMC and an SD card, when re-installing 16.04. I removed them and used gparted on another machine and then 'check' on what was in my case, a 29gb partition.
