Cloud Shell 2 and Openmedia vault issue

Unread postby N3ST » Fri May 19, 2017 5:34 pm

Hi Everyone,

I just received my Odroid Xu4 and cloudshell 2.

I installed the latest version of OpenMediavAult 3.0.76 with the kernel 4.9.27.

I had two disk, 1TB WD Red and 2TB WD Red, the 2 TB refuse too boot and it is doing a very strange noise, so I am sending it for RMA.

The second disk work fine (it was previously used in my old NAS without any issues), but as soon as I am using plexmediaserver (plugin in open media vault) to import my photo/music/etc.., after a few minutes of scanning the drive to generate the library and writing the database to the hard drive, the hard drive disappear, and I can't reboot the server, the only way to reboot the odroid is to unplug the power supply.

I don't know what could create this issue.

Does anybody has any idea?

Best regards,

N3ST

If you can access SSH, you can check some log files on the command line.
Anyway, report the OMV related issues on the OMV forum.

Hi,

This is the problem I am facing, because I am not sure that the issue is related to OMV, but maybe to the cloudshell itself, has the hard drive only disappears when heavely used, which has never happened before with OMV on my old NAS.
The only thing that has changed for the hard drive is that it is now running in the cloudshell.
Could it be possible that the connector are dirty (I have seen that it is a common issue with Odroid XU4 and cloudshell), or a hard related issue. Is there maybe a new firmware available for the sata controller?

There is no firmware update for USB3.0 to SATA bridge controller.

Check the "lsusb -t" output when the disk disappears if you can access SSH.

I tried to run the command lsusb -t when reproducing the issue, it cannot generate any output, I can see the command prompt, I can stop the command from running, but it can never finish.

So it seems that something is wron with my cloudhsell 2 /:(

Try the latest image. OMV released a new version OMV_3_0_76_Odroidxu4_4.9.28.7z
https://sourceforge.net/projects/openme ... d-XU3_XU4/

BTW, does your issue happen only when you install the plexmediaserver?
We want to reproduce your issue. But we need time to learn what is plexmediaserver.

Hi,

Sorry it took me sometime to responde.

I received my new hard drive.

So now I have two WD RED 1TB and 3TB.

The issue appeared again. Scanning the media library with plexmedia server, it stopped because the hard drive are gone.

This only happen when the CPU load is high and plexmedia server is scanning the disk and writing the database.

I think the issue is coming from the USB3 side.

What should I do?

Send it back? Ask for a refund?

I need a working NAS to store my data....

Best regards,

Let's try to find a root cause.
What is the "dmesg" output on SSH?

Hi,

Recently I receive my XU4 + CloudShell 2 and also choose OMV (3.0.76) to drive my home NAS. I had a very similar issue to the one mentioned here !!

This seems to work for me https://forum.odroid.com/viewtopic.php?f=146&t=26016&start=150#p190507

Regards,

Luiz

Hardware issues (under-voltage) are not related to software: viewtopic.php?f=146&t=27548&start=50#p196805 (you need to replace your PSU or the cable between PSU and XU4)

How should amperage ratings be related to under-voltage? I bet a 5.25V/3A rated PSU will do and your 5.0/6A rated not. :)

Just read through odroid's description of the real issue in my link above.

Please don't mix the issues between CloudShell2 and CloudShell(the original one).
Let me clarify the current situation.

CloudShell2 uses a 15V/4A PSU with a few on-board DCDC converters and there is no voltage drop issue.
15V->12V->5V step-down DCDC converters are generating very stable power for the hard disk drives and the XU4 individually.
But a few of users reported the thick bundle cable caused a stress to the micro-USB 3.0 connector on the CloudShell2 interface board and it could make the communication stability issue.
They told us replacing the cable with a slightly thinner/flexible one could fix the issue.
Some other users reported the lower-side USB 3.0 connector was too sensitive and he had to use the upper-side one due to the mechanical/electrical tolerance problem of the USB 3.0 plug/receptacle connectors.
S.M.A.R.T. compatibility issue on JMS561 was reported several weeks ago to JMicron and they could reproduce the issue recently with a specific HDD.
Yes, some HDD ATA version information was misinterpreted and it caused the random crash when we access the S.M.A.R.T. 0x04 sub-data.
I hope JMicron releases a new firmware in two weeks.

CloudShell
Several users reported that replacing the PSU could fix the communication instability issue (Reset SuperSpeed USB device number 3 using xhci-hcd" error message).
Any unstable voltage on the USB or SATA 5Volt rail could cause "usb reset" issue. Once two HDDs were connected together, this issue was much more reproducible.
But we could reproduce a similar issue even we applied very accurate & stable 5.15Volt on the USB power rail separately when we use the Kernel 4.9 only not the 3.10.
This issue occurs only with the Genesys Logic SATA Bridge in the original CloudShell. Other JMicron/Asmedia have no such issue regardless of the UAS driver.
Heavy Samba traffic with Torrent loads could reproduce the "Reset USB" issue intermittently.
We will try to find a real root cause even it takes very long time.
