ODROID XU4 No Power No LED

Unread postby kamilmirza » Fri Mar 17, 2017 4:28 am

greetings guys

today i though let us try DietPi on my Odroid XU4, previously i was running meveric's debian jessie from quite some time
flashed it and saw some really cool features and went home for some more digging
came home and powered it on and its not powering up - no power LED but i see that power LED blinks/pulsing after some seconds
tried uSD and eMMC boot but still no power
after reading similar threads i came to know that my beloved XU4 is damaged/dead - this can't be true :(
please can anyone confirm this?

EDIT: another thing i would like to add
i changed the stock heatsink with a replacement just as same as HERE few weeks earlier
read some reading and found that scratches on heatsink surface can short circuit the ceramic capacitors around PMIC
then i removed my custom heatsink and i see plenty of scratches :(
can i replace/repair the ceramic capicators or the PMIC?
is there any solution to fix this issue?

can you check the output of the power supply with a DMM it should be 5 volts

if this is correct then you may have a problem with the xu4.
.the red led should always remain on with the power supply connected and switched on...
try pluging the power pack into a different gpo..your wall power outlet may be at fault...

you could try reflasing 16.04 ubuntu to see if this helps on your emmc..

well i have tried multiple power outlets
can't arrange a Digital Multi Meter right now. maybe day after tomorrow - will report back
plus i don't think i am eligible for RMA

If there is no red LED light, your board could be damaged by unknown electrical shock probably.
But it is still worth to use a DMM to check the PSU functionality.

I think your custom heatsink could kill the XU4 too.
But the cost of replacing PMIC/CPU can be 2~3 times more expensive than price of new XU4.
Even we can replace it, we can't guarantee the replacing can fix your board since other parts also could be damaged.

but the scratched heatsink should short circuit the board/component immediately, right? but why this late?
i think my XU4 is not completely dead, the power LED blinks momentarily though :?

It is possible that the heatsink moved (and created a new scratch) when you moved/handled it. You should try bypassing the pmic and power the xu4 through the gpio pins. Also, try to power it up without the heatsink - maybe the short was temporary and not damaging...

apply power to pin 1 of the 30 pin header..it is closest to the usb port and closest to the heat sink apply the negative to the usb chasis it is a ground point...

i don't have my own DMM yet
how can i do such tasks without DMM?
BTW i read @odroid post on another forum that pin-12 (PWRON) and pin-1 (5V) should be shorted to power it ON
plus is it possible that 12V FAN did this damage?

12V fan shouldn't have been an issue. At a lower voltage it should either rotate slower, or not at all

thank you kind sir!
managed to power it ON by your method
running DietPi - temp levels with stress seems ok
@mad_ady said that the short could be temporary/can this be repaired?
what would be the consequences of running with 5V pin/any port failure i might see? how diagnose any damaged peripheral?

EDIT: seems like my USB 3.0 ports are not working, USB 2.0 port is fine
ethernet works with 1000 full-duplex

EDIT 2: uploaded photo
soldered to pin1
powering with stock power adapter

If the problem is temporary, the DC in should start working after you remove the heatsink.
You can safely power on the board through gpio if you use a stable power supply.
Don't give up yet on the usb3 ports - if ethernet works it means the controller works as well. Make sure usb devices are firmly pushed into the port, sometimes it's just bad contact.

Can you find on-board USB 3.0 hub IC in "lsusb" output?

The hub controller IC seems to damaged it is the main reason why the USB 3.0 ports don't work.

you could try this if your game and up to this idea apply 5 volts to the usb port shown in this diagram.
.i am not shure if at all it will work and could damage the board.
.but i figure you dont have much to lose only to gain if the idea works

download/file.php?id=5565

once you have done this
Code: Select all
lsusb
to check see if the port`s show up

well I have decided to give it try
few things I wanna ask beforehand:
1)should the device(xu4) must be running when shorting the usb3 pins?
2)how should I short the pins? total noob here
3)both pins should be given 5V from the GPIO pin-1? I am already giving 5V from pin-1 to the power socket on the board, as shown in photo
4)should I switch to microSD instead of eMMC to be safe?

feel free to add in your suggestions if any

1 no definilety do not have the board powered while doing this mod...disconnect totally every thing inc emmc and sd-card

2 you have to solder a link between the two pins as per the diagram

3 apply the same 5 volts as your pin one ..is connected ..it is the only source

4 if you have an sd-card free i would flash 16-04 onto it and use that for now...switch to sd card on the board...

i tried this method on an xu4 that i had blown the usb but i think the chip was too far gone..i did try ...u may succeed

@phaseshifter
Your solution can fix the power issue on the USB 3.0 host connectors.
But it can't fix the damaged USB hub IC issue unfortunately.

Can you source the GL3521 IC?
http://www.hardkernel.com/main/products ... &tab_idx=2

We can try to fix it by replacing the IC.
But it is not easy to guarantee the functionality.

as i did state i was not shure weather it would work..i had thought that at which odroid had stated was probable ..but was not exactly shure..

more often than not the outlay of repair and freight can often cost more than buying a new unit.
.you have to factor that in when you are going down this path...

also now xu4`s sold from h-k without power supply makes it a cheaper alternative...but it is the factor that holds the balance...
