Hi there,

just got my XU3 lite, running ubuntu and XBMC
i tried to install OpenVPN to use the XU3 as VPN server as well, but looks like there is no tun.ko included in the kernel / modules
OpenVPN installs fine, but does not works, since there is no tun modul

could you add this please ?

Hi all,

My first post on forum...

Following Kernel config is required for docker:

odroid@odroid:/usr/src/odroidxu-3.10.y$ diff .config .config.default

< CONFIG_MEMCG=y
< CONFIG_MEMCG_SWAP=y
< CONFIG_MEMCG_SWAP_ENABLED=y
< CONFIG_MEMCG_KMEM=y
< CONFIG_CGROUP_PERF=y

< CONFIG_RAID6_PQ=y

> CONFIG_RAID6_PQ=m

But unfortunately thats not enough, due to docker1.0.1 installed from repository having enormous number of bugs.
1) Missing General->Namespace in odroid XU3 kernel config (it does not exists at all).
The containers are getting started in 20% of attempts.
2) Next issue: Device Mapper umount bug in docker (not resolved).
See
https://github.com/docker/docker/issues/4036
https://github.com/docker/docker/pull/4067
https://github.com/docker/docker/pull/4096
https://github.com/docker/docker/issues/5684
..etc..
So, BTRFS is the only option currently available for Docker (and needs to be compiled into kernel).
2 another options:
AUFS - rejected by Torvalds long time ago (now dropped from docker).
OverlayFS - not yet in kernel, not yet correctly supported by Docker.

I've succeed to compile Docker 1.4.1 and now moving it to BTRFS due to 2nd bug.
Additionally I'm compiling Kubernetes/Etcd for my XU-3.
If any one interested, I'l' provide github repo in advance.

overlayfs was accepted in kernel, but it's not in 3.10 so you need to backport it.
ubuntu kernels have had it for a long time, you can use their patch.

Yep, like AUFS...actually...
But the point is, OverlayFS is not correctly supported by Docker (just like DeviceMapper).
Only "alive" option supported by Docker is BTRFS.

CONFIG_SND_SEQUENCER=m
CONFIG_SND_SEQ_DUMMY=m
# CONFIG_SND_SEQUENCER_OSS is not set
CONFIG_SND_RAWMIDI_SEQ=m
CONFIG_SND_VIRMIDI=m

Needed for sound in dosbox.
Or at least I know CONFIG_SND_SEQUENCER is and the others require answering once you add it.

No rush as I've rolled my own and if you want me to do a pull request with the changes just let me know.
I know you are a busy man. :)

...did you read my article in the January issue of the odroid magazine?
AFAIK, there is the need to disable XFS support as well in order to get a working kernel tree in 3.10.y for compilation.
The easiest way for a kernel config is to fetch the config from ARCH-Linux for the XU3 as it comes with docker suppoirt fully enabled.

But unfortunately thats not enough, due to docker1.0.1 installed from repository having enormous number of bugs.
1) Missing General->Namespace in odroid XU3 kernel config (it does not exists at all).
The containers are getting started in 20% of attempts.

See

https://github.com/docker/docker/issues/5684
..etc..
So, BTRFS is the only option currently available for Docker (and needs to be compiled into kernel).

...never had this issue when using the HK supplied ubuntu 14.04 or Archlinux.
AFAIR ubuntu installs docker 1.1 from the repos...once you have the kernel, it runs fine.
ARCH-Linux is on 1.2 at least.

I've succeed to compile Docker 1.4.1 and now moving it to BTRFS due to 2nd bug.

...as said, never seen this with my docker exercises...docker is working great for me, but I use ARCH-Linux as the host OS in 99% of the time.

@Hominidae

Indeed I followed your tutorial, but it didn't worked for me.
There is no General->Namespaces->User Namespace in 3.10 menuconfig (no such menu item).
And Docker 1.0.1 installed from repo starts containers in 20% of times, after booting into re-configured kernel (including disabled XFS, which in fact does not have an effect).

...the kernel menuconfig dependency tree itself is buggy in 3.10.y,,,the namespace element will only appear in the menu *if* you do disable XFS Filesystem.
This is how I did it with the help from mdrj, see this and follow a couple of post further down:

viewtopic.php?f=98&t=5984#p52095

..maybe something has changed since?
My XU3 is busy running vital tasks, but I will try to reconstruct in a VM.

I just checked in a VM.
- prior to build the kernel, install lxc and docker.io
- Follow the steps from the wiki and checkout the kernel 3.10.y tree for XU3.
-> do "make odroidxu3_defconfig"
-> check the default config with lxc-checkconfig, it is indeed unsuitable:
Code: Select all
fred@docker:~/odroidxu3-3.10.y$ CONFIG=./.config lxc-checkconfig
--- Namespaces ---
Namespaces: enabled
Utsname namespace: enabled
Ipc namespace: enabled
Pid namespace: enabled
User namespace: missing
Network namespace: enabled
Multiple /dev/pts instances: missing

--- Control groups ---
Cgroup: enabled
Cgroup clone_children flag: enabled
Cgroup device: missing
Cgroup sched: enabled
Cgroup cpu account: enabled
Cgroup memory controller: missing
Cgroup cpuset: missing

--- Misc ---
Veth pair device: enabled
Macvlan: enabled
Vlan: enabled
File capabilities: enabled

-> now do a "make menuconfig"
...by default, XFS support is *enabled*
Here the "General Support -> Namespaces config looks like this:

Image

- now return to the toplevel, enter Filesystems -> and *disable* XFS-Support
- return to "General Support -> Namespaces config" and you will see:

Image

-> voilà ;)

...now enable what is needed, as decribed in the article...no need to touch BTRFS, RAID6 or else...then safe the new config.
...and I suggest to test it *before* waisting time on a compile run. :mrgreen:
Code: Select all
fred@docker:~/odroidxu3-3.10.y$ CONFIG=./.config lxc-checkconfig
--- Namespaces ---
Namespaces: enabled
Utsname namespace: enabled
Ipc namespace: enabled
Pid namespace: enabled
User namespace: enabled
Network namespace: enabled
Multiple /dev/pts instances: enabled

--- Control groups ---
Cgroup: enabled
Cgroup clone_children flag: enabled
Cgroup device: enabled
Cgroup sched: enabled
Cgroup cpu account: enabled
Cgroup memory controller: enabled
Cgroup cpuset: enabled

--- Misc ---
Veth pair device: enabled
Macvlan: enabled
Vlan: enabled
File capabilities: enabled

..now build the kernel, install and reboot, as laid out in the wiki.
After reboot, check that the new suitable kernel is up with "lxc-checkconfiig"...it should work nicely, even with docker.io being in v1.01

Thnx much, Its really tricky...Never taught the menuconfig items appearance maybe conditional.
Logically...it should be mutually exclusive.

Far be it from me to complain. ;)

But could we leave this thread to being composed of actual requests for additions to the XU3 kernel .config and keep discussions in other threads.
I'm thinking that would be easier for mdrjr in the long run.

Is there a way to get the kernel header files for ubuntu 14.04, exactly as you configured it (3.10.63)? I need them to compile some MFC related code.
Thanks!

@mdrjr, you mentioned earlier that only the performance cpufreq governor works well on the XU3. Setting scaling_max_freq with the performance governor strikes me as a strange workaround that is not compatible with existing software. Is there any reason that the userspace governor can't be enabled?

I would like to use docker on my ODROID-XU3 and in order to do so, there are some features which need to be enabled in the kernel which are currently missing.

Code: Select all
$ lxc-checkconfig
--- Namespaces ---
Namespaces: enabled
Utsname namespace: enabled
Ipc namespace: enabled
Pid namespace: enabled
User namespace: missing
Network namespace: enabled
Multiple /dev/pts instances: missing

--- Control groups ---
Cgroup: enabled
Cgroup clone_children flag: enabled
Cgroup device: missing
Cgroup sched: enabled
Cgroup cpu account: enabled
Cgroup memory controller: missing
Cgroup cpuset: missing

--- Misc ---
Veth pair device: enabled
Macvlan: enabled
Vlan: enabled
File capabilities: enabled

Note : Before booting a new kernel, you can check its configuration
usage : CONFIG=/path/to/config /usr/bin/lxc-checkconfig

As you can see in the output above, the following features are missing in the kernel:

    * Namespaces:
      - User namespace
      - Multiple /dev/pts instances
    * Control groups:
      - Cgroup device
      - Cgroup memory controller
      - Cgroup cpuset

I hope you could enable these five missing features.

Regards,

John Doe

@jojn doe

Although the pull request concerning aufs/docker support has been merged (https://github.com/hardkernel/linux/pull/95), you still need to compile the kernel from source (https://github.com/umiddelb/armhf/wiki/Installing,-running,-using-docker-on-armhf-(ARMv7)-devices#odroid-xu3).
Usually it takes some time until HK releases a new kernel image.

Beside of `lxc-checkconfig` I recommend the `check-config` script form the docker developers since lxc-checkconfig does not cover all requirements needed to run docker properly (http://forum.odroid.com/viewtopic.php?f=77&t=9305&p=74892&hilit=docker#p74892),(https://github.com/umiddelb/armhf/wiki/Installing,-running,-using-docker-on-armhf-(ARMv7)-devices#see-whats-missing). If you compile the latest kernel sources `check-config` will flag the missing overlayFS support only (which is OK).

If you managed to run docker on your XU3 I strongly recommend to update the docker binary to version 1.5.0 as well (https://github.com/umiddelb/armhf/wiki/Installing,-running,-using-docker-on-armhf-(ARMv7)-devices#updating-from-docker-version-101)

Hi,
I've seen that the kernel isn't compiled with hard-float. The Makefile in ./arch/arm/ explicitly defines -msoft-float. I wonder whether this is an issue here as this is used for all ARM cores?

@mdrjr, could you open the makefile for the new 8812au backport and change "CONFIG_RTL8821A = n" to "CONFIG_RTL8821A = y"?

I've got an edimax EW7811 that uses the rtl8821a config. Thanks.

I've got an edimax EW7811 that uses the rtl8821a config. Thanks.

Did you tested it ? It worked for you?

I did not test it, but all the other 8812 drivers online have that config and others enabled and work fine.

I tested it and the build failed because it's missing the 8821 specific files. Would there be any way for you to add the 8821 driver into the kernel?

Because of docker support.
Would like to use xfs, too :/

what a bad solution, removing xfs support for getting docker to work.
ok, i could compile my own kernel, but this can't be the right way, thus it works only until next kernel update.

i bought my odroid xu4 for a nas system whith a fantec 4 bay usb case. i have large xfs formatet disks. having no xfs support makes my odroid unusable for me.

what do you suggest, mdrjr?

I too am interested in xfs support for XU3 (I consider moving my HDD from my old NAS which is XFS formatted). Unfortunatelly, there is no fuse xfs implementation.
Would this trick work?
1. Compile kernel + modules for docker namespaces
2. Comoile kernel with xfs support as module.
3. Insert xfs modules in docker kernel
4. Profit

We'll add xfs back..

We can disable Aufs now since moon.linux ported the overlayfs to our kernel.

Hi guys,
Pardon the newbe question. But is there anything special about kernel 3.10.x that limit's Odroid hardware to that kernel?
Has anyone tried running 4.2.3 on Odroid hardware? I know RGLinuxTech builds kernels for U3.
I heard that there are binary blobs used by some phone and tablet hardware, but Odroid's run most things via USB.
What about graphics drivers? is that the problem? Then what about Android?
