DAW For live multi channel recording with xu4

Unread postby Thecharacterg » Wed Apr 11, 2018 10:33 am

Just starting this project, because of a need to add recording station to 18 channel XAir 18 Behringer mixer. At this time I am waiting for my ODROID xu4 to arrive with a 32gb emmc. I plan to use Ardour,Reaper or Tracktion as the DAW, and possibly x2go for Remote Desktop, as this will be a headless system mounted in a rack case, with the mixer.

Mixer setup, of xair 18. This is practically a 16 channel digital mixer/sound card

This is my current setup, I am running a raspberry pi bplus(yes I need to upgrade). It’s main use was a WiFi bridge to the router to provide one link device to the system setup.
As the project goes forward, I will update the community about the project.

I got it running with Armbian, and the Remote Desktop is running like a champ.

Wanting to stress it out on most number of channels I can record at once right now, but need a lot of mics and instruments. If I can get four recorded at once, I’ll be happy. At the end of the day I want to see some tweets I can make, stearin clear of others projects because I want to see what I figure on my own. I love suggestions like yours on the link they are useful.
It’s the theory that no one has an original thought, because now millions can think of similar ideas. Looking at stripping down the system now to just running the audor and connection servers. Adding a 128gb USB3 stick to record on to. Maybe add on the xtouch compact on for fine tuning

Glad to hear you made it.
I hope you will have a gorgeous 4-channel recording system soon.

After reading the article I think I solved some issues. By using Remote Desktop and adding a file server the need to touch it is completely gone. Something that the article stated static shocked the board. I believe the display causes that, but with headless unit I can’t really test that theory out.
The difference between mixers is installing purpose. The xr 18 is ment for places that have old mixing stations, where a venue has installed wired system and wants to update to a digital mix controller, where they can place an iPad to countrol the unit. Many traveling audio engineers like to use them, but after you go rack you don’t go back. So there is no difference between the units but form factor. Both can be left on stage, but a rack mount is easy just to be put somewhere out of the way on stage. Saving lots of time and money doing mixer board runs.
So, I can’t wait to get up to full 16 channels of recording through this thing.2 are dedicated to mix out/computer audio.
