Power regulator for XU4 CarPC

Unread postby Palasito » Sat Aug 26, 2017 12:39 am

Hello guys !! :D
I am currently building a carPC with an Odroid XU4 and using this converter
https://www.cableworks.gr/ilektronika/arduino-and-microcontrollers/buck-and-boost-converters/buck-converter-step-down-dc-dc/dc-dc-12a-200w-adjustable-buck-converter-module-power-supply/

On the test bench everything is excellent (powered by a modified PC power supply).. it is really stable and very nice !!
Whenever I hook it on my car though I get a high pitched noise based on load of car and odroid.
I thought of having a low-dropout linear regulator between the converter and odroid, will it help ? Also, is there anything else I can do to stop the noise ? Different ideas are more than welcome !! :D :D

I think any linear regulator can fix the noise issue.
You have to find where the noise comes from. I think the inductors or capacitosr on the big converter might generate the noise.
In that case, you need to find other step-down converter.

Thanks for your reply odroid!!
On the test bench i plug the 12v and ground wires from the psu to the converter and I use it to power the odroid.
In that case I get no sound and everything works perfect..
However, when I plug the 12v constant and a ground in my car even with the ignition off I have sound!!
If it was the car then I should have no sound with the key off.. on the other hand, if the converter was generating noise I should be able to have noise when I use it on the test bench too.. I am kinda confused to be honest..
The only thing that makes sense is that my test bench power supply does a great job filtering the output voltage and the converter just doesn't ruin it..

Old post, late response but...

odroid is correct. a linear regulator can fix. I ended up using this power supply for my car project:power supply

I got a old post about it here

OP, That is a hobby grade piece of junk. The Meanwell DCDC linked above should do the trick.
