Odroid-XU4 Rugged Enclosure

Unread postby Diigiit » Mon Feb 06, 2017 1:49 pm

We have released a new rugged enclosure, this time for the Odroid-XU4 computer.

http://www.us.diigiit.com/odroid-xu4-rugged-case

Some of the nice features of this enclosure:
- thick ABS wall
- safe microSD card slot so that microSD card does not fall inside the enclosure
- M3 screws and brass inserts
- Push button

It is available in black color right now. More color will be manufactured soon.

This enclosure is at least as heavy duty as our Odroid-C2 rugged enclosure:

looks like it traps the heat inside and the board runs hot easily. The top of the box only has small vent holes, also the sides are very small.
Especially the XU4 could probably heat up in such a case rather easily.

I may say that air flow and heat transfer to a complex subject (that was pretty much what I studied a long time ago: aerodynamics and heat transfer :o ). However Diigiit has no setup to run a finite element software on this enclosure. This is much more of a gut feeling and try and error process right now.

The purpose of the duct around the fan was thought to evacuate heat outside of the enclosure. Hardkernel default plastic enclosure seems to have very small fan slots and I think this may means air to partially going back inside the enclosure. The rugged enclosure have wider slots. On the other hand, 3mm thick walls won't dissipate as well temperature as thin Hardkernel case walls.

Right now, we did not run any CPU intensive application but it seems that air is going outside nicely.

If you have any suggestion of CPU intensive application for the XU4, we can run a test.

Code: Select all
apt-get install cpuburn
burnCortexA9 & burnCortexA9 &
watch cat /sys/devices/virtual/thermal/thermal_zone0/temp

you can later kill it with killall burnCortexA9 if you have psmisc installed.

You might have wider slots but they also seem shorter, and you only have them on one side.
The fan is actually pushing the air on the cooler, and the only way the air can be transported is to along the fins of the cooler.
Which would mean towards the GPIO and to the HDMI port. Which is completely covered in your case.

Ok, thank you.

As you suggested, this would not hurt addition extra slots on the sides. Also, changing a little bit the duct chamfer may help air flow.

I will try to post the result before and after modification as well as compare it to Hardkernel enclosure and ShapedMedia enclosure.

We'll see if this case can be rugged as well as cool ;)

Honestly the weak link is still the actual fan/sink itself. This case is actually quite good but there's always room for improvement (I've already made a small change to mine, although for a slightly different purpose...)

Will post my thoughts later when I get a chance to take some photos.

Looking at it again closely, I think the biggest flow improvement would be increasing the intake vent diameter to the same as the fan shroud ID, or larger even. Closing the gap between the intake rim and the shroud will also help by increasing flow ever so slightly (reduced intake bypass). Some additional exhaust holes could be added to the box but there's nothing particularly wrong with the existing design, with slots in one end and venting around the bottom of the board.

Far as other tiny tweaks go, here's a good one:

Tiny slot allowing external access to the physical boot select switch... Great for doing SD to eMMC installs without opening the enclosure!

Thank you for you comments.

New model has now slots on both ends of the case (instead of only one end) and has also a small slot on the front of the box (where USB ports are located). I am not sure if you have the latest release or the previous one.

As for the switch access, it could be added. However, right now, the idea behind those enclosure is to use them as desktop computers. Maybe those openings on the box should be used as optional features like for the GPIO.

Mine's the original with slots at one end, but that's fine for me... if I need to modify I'm surrounded by CNC machines... the little boot-switch slot was a simple job for knife and needle file :D

clever use of those long screws! along with the added perk that they are difficult to lose if you drop one off the workbench...

Do you plan to also sell the STL files?
I would like to print one myself.

Not right now. Furthermore you need to have screws and inserts.

Also since Hardkernel do not want to support us with a warranty more than a week and that they require us to test any single unit we receive, we are thinking about selling the Odroid assembled with the enclosure and tested with our own 1 year warranty.

The only complaint is the shipping :(

Ordered the 23rd of March and shipped the 26th. (Excellent)
Two days for the boarder (Canada to US). (Good)
28th ships from NY and goes to NJ and ........ as of 3rd of April still there... (HORRIBLE).

I would have paid a little extra for better shipping, if it was available. I don't even have an updated delivery date.

Still can't wait to receive it :)

Orders usually arrives within 6 business days in the US West Coast and 5 days for Canadian West Coast with regular Canada Post or USPS delivery but it can be sometimes a little bit longer. We have a second option for faster delivery within the US; it takes between 2 and 3 days.
We use to ship with UPS in the US but due to carrier handling fees and extra fees we had a lot of complaints from customers so we stop it.

I received my order. Thanks for the response about the shipping....I understand you just can't make everyone happy all the time :) Now....on to the enclosure. I like it. It fits pretty well together. Two of the "feet" had to have the centers cleaned out, just a little junk left in and the bottom was a little bowed (very little). Overall a nice, reasonably priced case. Good job!
