No worries, if one doesn't ask... =)
You were nice enough to publish the height-map to begin with.

Hey Everyone,

Please check Ameridroid in the USA for our NEW X-U4 Aluminum Enclosure Passive cooling solution.
This will solve the Fan noise problem but also boost performances.
We are Shapedmedia, the manufacturer of the awesome all aluminum machined enclosures.
They are available in a wide choice of colors and come complete ready to install as a kit for your X-U4

@ smooth92037, @ShapedMedia

Can we use thermal paste instead of yout TIM with the case? Since the TIM from hardkernel is not such good quality, replacing it with thermal paste gave me very good results.

I have just noticed the article about my case in the current ODROID Magazine (January 2016).
This is a huge honor for me, thank you so much for that.

You're welcome! The case is awesome and you obviously put a lot of thought and care into it. It is a nice combination of art and function.

I especially like the fan-less cooling and the wavy heat dissipators. I was always an admirer of the U2 heatsink/case design, and you've taken that concept a step further :)

Chris, Really nice build :)

* Is it correct that you are only cooling the SOC ("A" in your image) via contact w/ the case?
* Does the SOC protrude higher from the PCB than components "B", "C", and "D"? It looked like you measured all of this for your modeling!

I've been pondering how to eliminate the thermal pad that's normally used on these to mate with the heat-sync. I figure that shimming the SOC with 1mm copper (to get away from resistors and things on the PCB) and using proper thermal paste would be much better for heat conductivity. I expect I'd want to put a shim on "B" as well so the heat-sync doesn't tilt sideways, but if "B" protrudes differently from "A", then I need to use different thickness shims... Any idea here?

Edit: Never mind. I figured out how to view the height map you gave us. Many thanks for this... I don't have the tools to measure this stuff!
A: 1mm
B: 0.7mm
C: 0.8mm
D: 0.6mm

And the resistors around B are: 0.9, 0.9, 0.9...
And other components: 0.6, 0.9,...

I think this is the most beautiful case I've ever seen. I would be interested in purchasing one. I am probably limited to about $100 or so. Is there any possibility?

Chris Oi
I like your design though I'm concerned about the production cost. I'm interested to talk about paying you for your design to use for a specific project where I need 50 boxes for the XU 4. If you're interested to share your design privately and get paid for it, please respond and then we can connect off line to discuss. I fully support engineers being paid for their work, unless they want to donate to a group. I don't expect you to donate this design. great work!

Thank you, but unfortunately I have to disappoint you because I changed my job and I don´t have access to the machine anymore.

Chris Oi wrote:Today I connected the fiber glass for the LED´s with a little bit of instant glue.
I also added the second USB 3.0 connection cable.
As the housing is quite confined I needed a lot of time to get things in place.
When I had assembled all, I realized that I had forgotten the thermal grease so I had to do everything again
But now my project is finished.
As you can see on the last picture, extending the LED´s via fiber glass to the front works very well.
I also put some rubber feet under the housing so some fresh air could get into it.

Finally I have to say that if I had known the huge amount of work of this project then I might not have started it.
But the result is - for me - awsome 8-)

At this point, I consider if it's worth it to build the case for other people because it´s a lot of work and difficult to get it assembled.
If I count together the material and all the milling work, then I have to take around 170€ for the housing without anodizing, the power button, the fiber glass and the screws.
It would make it easier to build around 5 housings at one time so I think 160€ are possible.
What do you guys think? Should I build more?

Yes! How do I get one!!
