[HC2] Holding together stacked HC2s

Unread post by joconor » Mon Apr 23, 2018 8:14 am

I have stacked HC2s and I find that just due to movement of the disk head, the stacked HC2s tend to slide. Every day I find that they've slid about an inch.

Has anyone built anything to secure a stack of HC2s so they don't slide? The heatsink doesn't seem to be designed the same as the MC1 heatsink, with an obvious place for screws. Maybe someone has come up with some ingenious ways of holding together a stack of HC2s?

Thanks.

M3 8mm self-tapping screws can be used with HC2/HC1/MC1 aluminum heatsink frame.

How many HC2s do you stack?

I currently have two, planning to stack two more for a total stacked height of four.

I think you may need four acrylic pieces something like this.

We will try to make drawings for HC2 height within a couple of days.

Wow, drawings would be awesome!

I'm not real clear on where the screws should go on the HC2. As I mentioned, it looks like the design of the heatsink differs somewhat from the MC1. The HC2 heatsink looks like it may have two potential places for screws: Two "C" channels, both on the inside of the heatsink (unlike the MC1, where the screw channels are on the outside), one near the top of an installed HDD, the other just underneath the HDD/HC2 board plate. I'm guessing that the bottom channel would be the better choice, as it looks like there's less chance for interference with the HDD

Yes, we need to use the bottom channels.
It must be something like this.

Refer the drawings.
AutoCAD format : https://dn.odroid.com/5422/ODROID-HC1_M ... CK_3.5.DWG
PDF format : https://dn.odroid.com/5422/ODROID-HC1_M ... CK_3.5.PDF

Print it on paper and check the holes location first.

Once you make a sample with a few HC2s, please consider writing an article for our Magazine.

Hi guys - I have 2 x HC2 but I can't get them to stack at all! One side fits in the groove but the other is too far apart so it sits on the top. Slightest movement and it falls onto the one below.
Am I missing a trick or a need for brute force here? H E L P !

OK figured it out. It doesn't go on with both HDD screwed on. Took the lower disk out, got them together - via a big plaster on a bleeding finger - and put the disk back! Sorted.

I have a recommendation for an HC2 accessory that would solve this issue.

Little plastic or hard rubber clips that can be used:

1) to clip together stacked HC2 frames one pair at a time
2) to act as feet for the bottom-most HC2 frame in the stack

Should be fairly easy to make this product and offer it as an add-on accessory.
Could also post up 3D-printing plans for those of us who have 3D printers.
