Cannot connect to wifi via terminal with Wifi Module 4

Unread postby ClownBaby » Wed Mar 07, 2018 12:52 am

Hello all!

I have recently run in to a problem that I cannot solve.

For a project I am working on I want to be able to connect to wifi via only the terminal so I don't have to connect a monitor to the odroid. As wifi adapter I am using odroid wifi module 4. Connecting via the regular network manager is no problem and when inspecting it I can see that the correct driver (RT2800USB) is in use. When disabling network manager and using

sudo iwconfig

I only get "no wireless extension" for wlan0 (which I know it is since when i unplug the module wlan0 disappears). When researching this problem I only encounter people who hasn't installed the driver properly or that they haven't turned the wifi adapter on via sudo ifconfig [client] up. I have done all these steps but it still doesn't work.

Does anyone have any good ideas how to turn the module on in software? Or make the odroid recognize it as a wireless unit.

Thanks in advance
Adam

You can still use networkmanager via nmcli.

If you use a minimal image for headless application, refer this guide too.

Thank you mad_ady! That did the trick, cannot believe i never found that command.

I used:

nmcli c

to find my network and:

nmcli device wifi con "SSID" password "PASSWORD"

to connect and that worked like a charm.
