480x272 Display Mode on XU4

Post by hunterhu »

Hi,

We are engineering to use XU4 boards in our project, and we are using 4.3" LVDS LCD display whose resolution is 480x272. However XU4 currently does not support 480x272 display resolution, according to boot.ini file.

We are actually moving from the discontinued C0 board to XU4 board, the same issue existed for C0 board and the support was added in C0's kernel, the forum thread is here: viewtopic.php?f=115&t=35074

We like Hardkernel's wonderful platform support and decide to stay with Hardkernel's platform XU4, but still we have to overcome the support of 480x272 display resolution on XU4, hopefully the previous work on C0 would make it easier this time. Please help!

Thanks,
Hunter

We will check feasibility on Ubuntu 20.04 + Kernel 5.4.

Hi @hunterhu,

It's confirmed that 480x272p60hz works with XU4 ubuntu 20.04 + Kernel 5.4.

As I tested before on C1 and the following configuration, I made a kernel patch and confirmed it using one of my monitor.

Code: Select all

Detailed mode: Clock 25.200 MHz, 166 mm x 94 mm
                480 600 700 800 (120 100 100)
                272 280 287 525 ( 8 7 238)
               -hsync -vsync
VertFreq: 60.000 Hz, HorFreq: 31.500 kHz
viewtopic.php?p=257510#p257510

Please find a test kernel image of XU4, kernel 5.4.y.
1. Unzip the file.

2. Backup the original zImage in /media/boot/zImage of your card.

3. Copy a new zImage of xu4_5.4.y_480x272p60hz.zip into /media/boot/

4. Modify boot.ini to set manual 480x272p60hz
Please add the following line in upper side of bootargs.

Code: Select all

setenv videoconfig "drm.edid_firmware=edid/480x272.bin"

# Boot Args
setenv bootargs "console=tty1 console=ttySAC2,115200n8 root=UUID=e139ce78-9841-40fe-8823-96a304a09859 rootwait ro fsck.repair=yes net.ifnames=0 ${videoconfig} ${hdmi_phy_control} ${hid_quirks} smsc95xx.macaddr=${macaddr} ${external_watchdog}"
5. reboot XU4 system

Can you check if this configuration works with your monitor as before on C1?
Then, it will be merged in a next XU4 release.

If you have any question or need more information like patch file, please let me know.

Hi @hunterhu,
Did you have any chance to check my kernel patch for the resolution, 480x272?

Hi @joy,

I don't have any bandwidth on this issue until now, sorry for the late response.

We are engineering our next generation platform based on Hardkernel's boards, c0 end of life really surprised us and taught us a lesson. Looking at the available boards, we are also considering C4 besides XU4 given that XU4 already 4-5 years old, C4 is new and just released.

So we are considering using C4 instead of XU4 so that we don't need worry about its availability in the next 5 years, what is your take on making the same 480x272 support on C4 platform?

Thanks,
Hunter

Hi @hunterhu,
Thank you for your response.
I will check if 480x272p60hz mode is included on the latest release version of C4 soon.

BTW, which OS are you planning to use for your project, Ubuntu or Android OS?

Side note: The ODROID-XU4 will be available by end of 2023 at least because there are still many B2B customers using the XU4.

@hunterhu,
For now, 480x272p60hz display mode is available only with Ubuntu OS of C4.
To support Android on C4, we need to work some parts of Android display drivers.

And please find @odroid's note about XU4 production supply period.

@odroid, @joy,

Thanks for the good news that is great!

We are using Ubuntu OS not Android, so we are good on the 480x272 support side.

By the way, What is the life span of C4? Just want to have a concrete data point to make decision with.

Thanks,
Hunter
