to check your cpu temp

Code: Select all
cat /sys/devices/virtual/thermal/thermal_zone0/temp

e.g 55000 equals 55 deg`s C

i think your better off with the gold heatsink and fan typically the blue heatsink is passive and not as good at keping temp`s down

the blue sink does not have a fan on it..but if it did you may find it better..

do some checks with the code above you will find out the differences

to have the fan constantly on you will need to short the black lead of the fan to earth-gnd.
.that is if you are powering it off the xu4 fan socket..
if you run 5volts from a usb port it is also a way to keep it constantly on ..
.or if you prefer run the fan via the 5 volt pin 1 of the 30 pin connector or pin 1 of the 12 pin connector..negative goes to gnd..etc..etc..

tempreture will vary depending what programs and threads you are running..i guess as cool as it can go is a start point but as is said it is all load Dependant as to temp changes...

fan port is 5 volts ..the negative side is used to switch the pwm with the nearby transistor you can see almost next to it...i.e. the negative does the switching.via the transistor that is fed off the cpu..

well 63c is not overly hot..i guess since it is doing work

Code: Select all
apt install htop

run htop and see what is using processor power..this shoul give you some indication of load`s

and at that temp the fan should be on..i am not shure what setup your running..pls elaborate

And for hardwear im using motorola lapdock, a external 3TB hdd on the usb 3(odroid usb3(2)), a miocrosoft mouse/keyboard ifered wierliss(motorola lapdock usb2(1)), wifi dongal(motoral lapdock usb2(2)), 5v 4A CWT AC Adapter and gold heatsink with noctua nf-a4x20.

I will try grounding the fan so it is on all the time. Might put a togual switch on it but I'm afraid I might ferget to switch it on. >_<
I also have coper shims I might try.

hmm seems odd your getting temps in the 60`s ..but if your fan is not constant running this may explain as to why..
i would have thought that you should be getting 30-40 max with that setup

You might see 30's if you live in Antarctica ;)

Either way, 64c isn't that worrying for this chip. 95c is considering the max 'safe' temp (and the temp the kernel will throttle the board to), but critical trip doesn't occur till ~115c. I've had my XU4 up at 109c when I was testing the buggy 4.9 thermal management and it ran with no issues, albeit that not a temp you'd want to run for too long.

Here's a simple script to quickly check the temps on all the sensors on the XU4:
Code: Select all
#!/bin/bash
#check-temperature.sh - prints the value of all thermal sensors
CELCIUS=$'\xc2\xb0'C
for i in /sys/class/thermal/*/temp
do
        fileName="$i"
        value=$(cat "$i")
        value=$(echo "$value/1000.0" | bc) #basic calculator
        printf "%s %.1f%s \\n" "$fileName" "$value" "$CELCIUS"
done

Run it through watch for nice full-screen output and realtime updates:
Code: Select all
watch --interval=1 -d check-temperature.sh

I can also recommend that you configure and use the conservative cpu governor. It will help keep your CPU as cool as it possibly can be, while hardly loosing any measurable performance.

@odroid_alc: I think this script could be really useful for your purpose. It should help w/ managing the fan on your ODROID XU4 (including keeping it on at all times).

Just a word of caution, though: having the fan running constantly will probably wear out its bearings a lot faster.
