Yes, it's a known issue (noted at download page). We use single ext4 partition scheme, while bootloader on eMMC can't handle that. Replacing bootloader is not as trivial as on other systems or SD card.

How about this method? AFAIK, the latest OMV is based on the Armbian.

Yes, that trick should work. I wanted to achieve this from Linux and implement it into our stock installer to make this process newbie friendly. I stuck somewhere in the middle, currently don't have access to hardware to proceed.

When choosing an OS for my XU4 I did look at Armbian but the message about it not working on EMMC on the download page did put me off. At the moment I seem to have settled for ArchLinux, seems like they solved the issue of single EXT4 partition on EMMC https://archlinuxarm.org/platforms/armv ... odroid-xu4

OK it is not as simple as you might like as it would require users to boot from the EMMC attached to SD adapter in SD slot first time, but you should be able to automate the execution of sd_fusing.sh script. The sd_fusing.sh script is quite interesting to read through. In fact if one has a bootable SD card then one can have EMMC attached as normal to the XU4 and boot from SD card and still run sd_fusing.sh to install the boot loader on the EMMC without needing to change UBoot configuration files. I actually have done OS installs to the EMMC like this as I don't want to have to open the case to remove the EMMC.

PS. Mainline kernel works fine on EMMC for me on ArchLinux. Well that is as fine as mainline kernel works on XU4, I have problems with USB3. What is broken about the EMMC install with mainline kernel on Armbian?

That fix is known for some time, but it's not very user-friendly. We wanted to solve this better and we did - update can be done from user space, but of course, you still need to boot from SD card with eMMC attached.

I like this Armbian as an alternative, the 4.9.56 xenial seems to support Docker out-of-the box, yay :-)

What I have noticed, on HC1 shutdown/reboot my mechanical 0harddisk registers a forceful "Power-Off_Retract_Count" event.
This is not good, this means power is cut hard and an emergency head park is performed every time.

Is it possible on shutdown sequence to send a proper park/sleep/power-down/I-don't-know-what-it-is-called command to /dev/sda before power is cut?

Didn't know about this problem. Is the problem present/fixed in stock Hardkernel build?

If you are still in a testing phase you can try switching to beta and switch between alternative u-boot/kernels, 3.10, 4.9 and 4.14 ... from within armbian-config ... perhaps it will behave differently.

We only support Ubuntu Xenial desktop since it's less buggy than Debian Jessie. Soon we will switch desktop to Debian Stretch, but currently, there are too many (upstream) problems to solve.

In any case you need to create a normal user during first boot, otherwise, the system won't start desktop.

Why is Armbian so noisy in the syslog? Especially what's the armbian-updates about?

Code: Select all

You can get rid of the

Code: Select all

Nov 27 01:26:01 localhost cron[914]: (*system*armbian-updates) INSECURE MODE (group/other writable) (/etc/cron.d/armbian-updates)
messages by removing the write permission for the group on /etc/cron.d/armbian-updates using

Code: Select all

chmod 644 /etc/cron.d/armbian-updates
resulting in:

Code: Select all

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 83 Nov 21 12:14 armbian-updates

I'd also like to know this.
It's not in its usual spot under /sys/devices/odroid_fan.13

"There are a number of settings in sysfs for the odroid-fan driver, on the XU4 this is under /sys/devices/odroid_fan.13, while on the XU3 it is /sys/devices/odroid_fan.14.
The settings are:
fan_mode: Auto or Manual (set to 1 for auto and 0 for manual, default Auto)
fan_speeds: Four space delimited fan speed percentage values, in ascending order. (default "1 51 71 91")
pwm_duty: Current setting of the PWM duty cycle (0-255, set dynamically)
pwm_enable: On or off (default on)
temp_levels: Three space delimited CPU Celcius temperature values, in ascending order (default "57 63 68")"

I figured it out, wasn't straightforward though

Code: Select all

sudo apt install linux-image-dev-odroidxu4
4.14 isn't development any longer and shouldn't be this way in my opinion. Remember there are people running older versions of your distribution.

Also why is the kernel so old, it's 4.14.0 compiled on November 24, 2017?

I like Armbian but it seems to be fragmented or not up to date, I'm unsure which. Is the kernel I'm running the latest available?

I'm committed to the Armbian version I'm running since I have compiled too many libraries and software to switch to a newer image, it would be great to know if I'm on some devel repos or if all images are updated the same. I think not since you stated it was a simple apt update/upgrade to get 4.14.y and as I show above it isn't this way.

Due to failed upgrade, we had to temporally revoke it - NEXT is still 4.9.y ... last update and images were canceled. Sorry for troubles ... will be done on a separate upgrade only for Odroid after more testing. Once during next month.

I don't understand what you mean a failed upgrade, I have been running 4.14 since I posted and all is well other than no fan control and the well known vulnerability.

You mean some hardware incompatibility?

Problem is our upgrade from 4.9 -> 4.14 - a process not a kernel(s).

And I just ran apt update/upgrade and it downgraded my kernel to 4.9.y

Don't you test before pushing things to the repo? I can no longer trust Armbian (the software) to do the right thing, the kernel is the most important package and should not be pushed without testing.

There is no way my kernel should have been downgraded.

*edit*
I apologize if I seem harsh, I don't mean to. I appreciate what the Armbian developers do and just want the important things to work correctly for others. I can fix most any issue but others can't.

Armbian is developed by a small group of people, even though the OS is so widely used in the world of SBC's. It is understandable that they have difficulties in keeping all the kernels up to date. How well supported is a particular board depends on whether there are volunteers to help with it or not.

They are a very open community, and they gladly accept new people cooperating with the development. I am sure anyone with deep knowledge in the XU4/HC1 kernel will be very welcome if he wants to lend them a hand.

hey hey,

is there any way of getting hardware acceleration going in chrome?
EGL seems to be working in the system, it'd be cool if it worked in chrome as well.
thanks!

You broke the kernel package? It reverted to 4.9 from 4.14 again.

After that problem with the upgrade from 4.9 -> 4-14, I did many tests with 4.14.y ... and found out there are actually no urgent reasons to upgrade. It happened few times that board with 4.14.y crashed at boot and that was good enough to postpone. So far I could not find the reason.

The main repository was reverted when the problem occurred and was never updated. It remains on 4.9.y

Okay but a warning would be nice, to you there may be no need for 4.14 but to me there is.

Updated images and repository. armbian-config supported kernel switching was tested and you can easily switch from legacy 3.10.y to mainline 4.14.y or development 4.18.y and back.

From armbian-config

apt update && apt upgrade

- you need to be on a stable branch
- you need to switch to alternative kernel DEV

Provide armbianmonitor -u that I understand it better.

Thanks good utility to post the configuration output to server.

Here is the output of armbianmonitor -u
root@odroidxu4:~# armbianmonitor -u
System diagnosis information will now be uploaded to http://ix.io/1kkB

You are using the nightly branch - which is auto made and quality is unknown. I tested this on a stable branch. Switching back to stable and then alternative kernels default-next-dev?

I fresh install the image again and then performed firmware "Run apt update & apt-upgrade"
after reboot Switch to alternative kernel it only show "dev" linux-image-dev-odroidxu4 it only boots back to 4.14.x kernel.

OK, but I assume you can go back from NEXT -> DEV? Well, I will inspect this as soon as I am back in the office. Thanks!

I checked out and it works exactly as expected. I didn't see it before :?

Kernel 3.10.y is too old for Bionic(and Stretch) userspace and we block switching to that kernel by purpose.
