@Meveric Thanks for keeping Debian current on the XU4!

OK - so I was silly enough to take the jump and install the 22.05 u-boot package onto the eMMC (was running an Armbian setup with Bullseye userland already). Now the eMMC won't boot anymore. I can still boot from SD just fine, but I need the OS to be on my (small) eMMC since I use the SD for storage. Is there a way to restore the u-boot without needing to flash a full Android like in the Hardkernel documentation? Could someone provide me with a copy of their eMMC u-boot (/dev/mmcblk0boot0)? I'd be much obliged.

I did the following with the u-boot image extracted from the 22.05 u-boot Debian package, but to no avail:

  # dd if=u-boot.bin.hardkernel of=/dev/mmcblk1boot0
That didn't improve things, I found the command below in the official documentation with an added offset, but no difference:

I did try other instructions first so I zeroed out that boot0 partition first to be sure not to have a contaminated boot partition. Either way, it didn't work.

Edit: the git repo for the v2017.05 u-boot has binaries already and a sd_fusing.sh script that puts the first and second stage and whatnot in place, I'm going to give those a shot later on. Will report back.

originally the android image was required as the u-boot is in a section of the eMMC where you don't have write permissions for.
So it's a bit more complicated to flash a u-boot on an eMMC.

Also you can't just flash the u-boot itself, it has to be signed, means you can't just take any u-boot but have to sign it first before you can actually use it.

I can confirm the sd_fusing script in the Hardkernel u-boot git writes everything to eMMC correctly - stage one, stage two, trust zone, and the actual u-boot - but with 22.05 it does not boot. I haven't hooked up serial to check what's going wrong here. Rewriting the Hardkernel v2017-05 u-boot makes the eMMC boot again.

So, summary: doesn't look like the newer u-boot works from eMMC, like meveric warned. Was worth the try :D.

I did a quick test and both the image and u-boot work fine from eMMC.
I've added the u-boot to the original post and altered the description accordingly.

That means I did do something wrong after all :oops:. Thanks for double checking and confirming.

Edit: I'm on Hardkernel's u-boot v2017-05, but I see you're linking to the 2012-07 tree? I used the sd_fusing.sh script from the v2017-05 tree with your 22.05 u-boot. That didn't work.

I'm using the generic Armbian 6.0 ARM multiplatform LPAE kernel and that one works with 2017-05, FWIW.

I think you're mixing a couple things up here.
I linked to the sd_fusing.sh tool that you need, as it allows for larger u-boot binaries up to 1mb in size.
The 2017 version was up to 720KB.
It also provides the bl1 and bl2 bootstages required to run this, as well as the trusted firmware blobs, which is why you need this in order to flash any of the more modern u-boots.
I also provide the u-boot binary (u-boot.bin) itself in the first post under the download for the image, which I used.
It is neither a version from 2012 nor 2017 but in fact a 2020.10 u-boot binary, as the u-boot itself has a version.

The date of the "package" has absolutely nothing to do with the actual u-boot.
What you call "my 2022.05" u-boot is actually the u-boot from HardKernel which is based around a u-boot version 2017.05 it is older, but works for the legacy images which still use uInitrd and zImage instead of vmlinuz-<kernel-version> and standard initrd.img-<kernel-version>.
One of the reasons why I do use a more modern u-boot is to actually support this.
Which is also the reason why "my 2022.05" doesn't work, as it's in fact a 2017.05 u-boot which is to old to run this image.

My Kernel is also an Kernel 6.0 multiplatform LPAE image, difference is, it's running on a newer version of u-boot with vmlinuz-6.0.12-armmp-lpae and initrd.img-6.0.12-armmp-lpae instead of legacy uInitrd and zImage.

Seeing that the 2017.05 "sd_fusing.sh" script also supports up to 720KB, means it would also work perfectly fine with the u-boot I provided, as it's less than 720KB.

this is where you can find the "official" u-boot and if you check under "tags" you can see the different versions of the u-boot.
The u-boot from HardKernel for the XU3/XU4 is base around u-boot version 2017.05, the one I used is 2020.10, as I found later versions had some issues and I was too lazy to try to debug what could be wrong.

Thank you for all the work that you are putting into this. I want to report that there may be some instability in the 6.0.12 kernel/drivers. Under heavy network usage, my XU4 locks up and stops responding. I don't know exactly what is happening, or if it is definitely from the kernel/drivers, but I need to do a hard reset every time and was able to replicate it several times. I have not experienced this behavior under 4.14 or 5.19.

I reinstalled the system and I'm basically stuck in the same place.
After installing LAMP, any application that (obviously) manages the appropriate ports during installation by itself will work.
But I can't find a way to explicitly open a port, for example to get phpmyadmin running.

Am I missing something or all provided kernels lacks of overlay2, aufs support?
Without this docker won't run.

Just to state the obvious:

If I wanted to host something and wanted to have the full gigabit speed, I should go buster (one of your experimental images) and upgrade from there with /etc/apt/sources.list edits, right?

yes you can do that, but you can not upgrade the Kernel or use Panfrost GPU drivers.

I'm kinda okay with that, mostly because I've never flashed u-boot and I'm not really sure of the process.
I've read I would have to boot the sdcard, then use the script from the post you linked a little above into the card but still I'm not really confident.

still wouldn't be enough.. lots of changes since then.. new boot partition new scripts and so on.. just updating would not work.

Sorry, I meant that if I went to go with a fresh install of Bullseye, I would have to start updating the u-boot, and I've never done it before.
I didn't mean updating from a previous version.

If you flash the image directly on an SD card it will work out of the box, only if you want to run it from eMMC you would have to flash the u-boot as well.

Yep, that was my understanding. And I do want to flash it into the eMMC, but I have to read up a little bit since I'm not understanding it pretty well/

Happy New Year altogether!

I started playing around a litle more in detail now with the Bullseye image. I normally disable ipv6 in kernel, so I added to

/boot/config.ini in the very end

which normally works fine as a kernel parameter in other distros.

But after a reboot the machine came back with

In the command line there is no entry for your parameter.

Looks like you might have made an error in the config.ini
Can you show that as well?

Hello again!

I switched now some of my NAS servers (mdadm RAID1, smb, USB3-Sata adapters, USB3-M.2 adapter in one case) from Buster to Bullseye, no problem so far, except the throughput for smb has collapsed to raspberry pi (USB2) performance. Ceterum censeo I have with Bullseye 8-9 MiB/s over smb, while with the absolute same hardware, cables etc. I had with the older OS 25 to 40 MiB/s.

That's a bt frustrating and in dmesg I don't see any hint like "Superspeed disabled" or something

Yes we discussed this here in the thread a short while ago that the network speed is rather slow.

You can see very high CPU load which is further limited by the fact that most of the time only the Cortex-A7 cores are used for network and not the faster A15 cores.

It seems to be a flaw in the drivers itself, but nothing that is easy to fix.

I've noticed this is specific to the NIC used on the XU4 itself, as using for example an external USB-to-LAN adapter provides much better performance.

Hi and thanks for reply!

In htop I see no excessive CPU usage under copy-via-smb, only 1.22 load average. You think the bottleneck is the RJ45? No way to use the old driver from Buster? USB-RJ45 is no option, as the USB3 ports are occupied by RAID drives. Or are both USB3 and the RJ45 on the same bus?!? Then a powered USB3 hub might be an option to try and see if it helps...

But the USB-HID is definitely not the culprit?!?

Copying FROM the smb share I get at least stable 17 MiB/s (USB3-Sata) or 22-24 MiB/s (USB3-M.2Sata), so reading faster than writing -> problem is USB?

just write and read directly from the device (without smb) and you know if it's USB related or not.

I played arround with the NAS servers (smb), USB quirks, dding to SD-card and NAS drives, rsync to/from SD-card/NAS-drives and performance over smb/samba.

tldr: Armbian Bullseye (kernel 5.4.225, smb 4.13.13) performes much better (arround 50-60 MiB/s read/write in smb with Dolphin) than new Debian Bullseye (kernel 6.1.1 lpae, smb 4.13.13) on same hardware (arround 7 to 13 MiB/s read/write, depending on USB-SATA hardware used) with Linux clients (opensuse Tumbleweed kernel 6.1.3.1, smb 4.17.4 something).

But an old Win 7 client (smb 2_10 without encryption) can write/read to/from my Debian Bullseye NAS with 35/42 MB/s. So what is here the real bottleneck?

- Kernel: Yes (different between Armbian and Debian)?
- smb: No? (same on Armbian and Debian)
- encryption/something: Maybe?!?

AS it was discussed already the LAN drivers for Kernel 6.1. Do not perform as well as the ones used in Kernel 4.14.
I can't say why.. I'm not a Kernel developer, using iperf3 you can see an extremely high load on the CPU. That's all I can say.

...but that's not consistent with the good performance I see with Debian Bullseye (your image) and win7 (unecrypted smb). And I don't see high load with htop while reading/writing via smb. The RJ45 driver can't be the culprit in my setup.

Nope, EXT4 all here. Generated on RAID1 with mdadm.

Replaced the Debian Bullseye by latest Armbian Bullseye and same smb.conf and get read/write 65 MiB/s with Armbian compared to 7-16 MiB/s with Debian.

It may be worth comparing/diff-ing kernel tunables (sysctl -a) between the two oses. Perhaps one has some limits by default.

...btw ipv6 is disabled in both installs (ipv6.disable=1 in kernel command line, in Armbian in addition in network interface configuration ipv6 is disabled).

Well, can't see anything obviously wrong. vm.swappiness is different and could affect performance - Maybe try changing it.
Other than that -

Debian has lower swappiness (60) than Armbian (100). Set swappiness to 100 on Debian, no change in samba performance...

first by default there is no swap partition on the image, so changing swappiness for non-existing swap partition will have no effect.
Aggressive swapping normally results in a decrease of overall performance, in fact if possible you should not use swap at all.
And the swappiness depends on the type of swap you're using, if you swap on SD/eMMC you want as little swapping as possible as you going to ruin your SD/eMMC very quickly.
HDD swapping will not necessarily result in a broken harddrive, but HDDs are normally rather slow so you loose a good chunk of performance.
Using zram you can use higher swappiness as it will do it completely in RAM and don't write on physical media, still swapping costs time and reduces overall performance.

Overall swapping has nothing to do with network traffic.
Swap should never be touched for this.
