"df -h" gives me:
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
udev 931M 0 931M 0% /dev
tmpfs 200M 11M 189M 6% /run
/dev/mmcblk1p2 29G 712M 28G 3% /
tmpfs 998M 0 998M 0% /dev/shm
tmpfs 5.0M 0 5.0M 0% /run/lock
tmpfs 998M 0 998M 0% /sys/fs/cgroup
/dev/mmcblk1p1 71M 51M 21M 71% /boot

"mount" says for /:
/dev/mmcblk1p2 on / type ext4 (rw,noatime,discard,errors=remount-ro,data=ordered)

Switched to a new (and better) SD card and to Debian Buster as well. Looks good so far... Only error message I could find after apt-get update and upgrade:

ln: failed to create hard link '/boot/initrd.img-4.14.180+.dpkg-bak' => '/boot/initrd.img-4.14.180+': Operation not permitted
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-4.14.180+

What does it tell me?

that is fine and can be ignored.
It tries to create a hard link on the bootfs, but since that is a fat partition it doesn't support hard links.. it's harmless and can be ignored.

Great, thanks! Installed nextcloud successfully... Now struggling with installation of OMV, producing error messages around nginx - but this is probably another thread...

you could install screen and start the process in screen session..
even if you end up with a broken pipe the session keeps running.

Hi again!

On the Buster 0.9 image I did "apt update" and in the end I got:

Code: Select all

Should I be concerned/do something before/after a "apt full-upgrade"?

nope looks fine.. the last lines just mean that the point release version of Debian 10 changed from 10.7 to 10.8.
It's fine, nothing to worry about.

finally and in the end the half-installed dkms blocked apt full-upgrade so I plugged in monitor/keyboard and started

Code: Select all

dpkg --configure -a
first it started and rebooted quite quickly, afterwards I did "dpkg --configure -a" again and this time it succeeded.

Now wireguard is up and running

Code: Select all

wg show
interface: wg0
  public key: key=
  private key: (hidden)
  listening port: 12345

peer: key2=
  endpoint: 10.10.10.29:65432
  allowed ips: 10.1.9.2/32
latest handshake: 1 minute, 8 seconds ago
transfer: 175.41 KiB received, 800.74 KiB sent
:-D

...hope the next full-upgrade will run headless via ssh, but I fear it will fail again when installing wireguard.
kind regards

fwiw, updating this Buster image to a 5.10 kernel will actually end in catch 22, as then no wireguard will be possible at all, as no wireguard-tools are in the Buster repos... wuuuuhh....

Yeah, upstream doesn't quite work yet.
Even if you build specific Kernel for Exynos, it's missing some features.

Re: [OS] Debian Stretch

Post by MichaIng »

Is the Odroid XU4 actually supposed to have a functional hardware random generator? /dev/hwrng is present, but all rng-tools packages (rng-tools, rng-tools-debian, rng-tools5) fail to read from it: https://github.com/MichaIng/DietPi/issues/4318
Or does some additional kernel module need to be loaded? The issue appeared on a Debian Buster image with your 4.14 kernel, so probably it did work on Stretch.

you have to keep in mind that the ODROID XU4 is from 2014 back then these topics where not that important on ARM devices.
And while it has random number generator and AES.. it's quite slow as far as I know.

Debian Buster also changed the way the entropy is generated, we even had issues at work with VMs running on fast Intel Xeon processors, that after a reboot you could not login directly as the entropy for SSH was empty and you had either to wait or give some extra parameters to the VM to fill the entropy at boot faster.

I don't know out of my mind if some extra Kernel modules can be enabled for better Kernel performance in entropy generation on Exynos 5 boards... I would have to read up on this.

Thanks for your answer. Indeed this became an issue mainly with some systemd change part of Debian Buster, which demands much more entropy during boot (as far as I understood), leading to hang from seconds to some minutes on boot, especially on headless devices and indeed in all VMs I run here, if haveged is not installed :). Strangely the Odroid XU4 boot fine, but the entropy shortage appears later, when trying to read from /dev/random, which then blocks. But I think that depends on the individual hardware, which hardware/input events is gathered how much entropy from.

Maybe the 5.4 kernel beings some change that makes rng-tools work. I found a related issue on the kernel repo about C1, probably a similar enhancement can (or is with 5.4) applied for XU4 as well: https://github.com/hardkernel/linux/pull/170

Hanging boot can btw solved with keybaord attached by hitting some random keys. I have a very old emachines notebook here, which hangs at a stage before even the haveged daemon is starting, where ~3 key hits are required to have boot proceeding, since it has Debian Buster (now Bullseye) installed. Quite an issue with older hardware, when not knowing about the matter.

sadly that commit is specifically for the C1 or "meson" devices (AmLogic), which does not apply to ODROID XU4.

Haven't tested it with Kernel 5.10 yet.
I think there were some talk about MFC support in higher Kernels, means you may loose hardware decoding/encoding with higher Kernel, so I'm not 100% sure if it's worth it.

Panfrost would be nice, but is currently not supported for Mali-T62x :(
So you need modified Kernel as well with Mali support, else no GPU support at all.

Hi Meveric!

I use these XU-4s for NAS with RAID, no graphics needed. Maybe I will try latest Ubuntu, but in general I avoid Ubuntu completely...

Will there be any Bullseye image for XU4?
kind regards

Yes bullseye will be available, but not sure what Kernel it will come with.

Hi,
i have updated system in buster (180->present) and everything looks ok but after reboot in hangs completely. I`m using it headless with files moved from emmc to ssd. I couldn`t connect with it nor ssh nor other services. So i connected it to tv and this is what i see:

Hi!

Did you notice this "reset superspeed USB" message before?

Maybe no access to the SSD (anymore?)?

The USB to SATA bridge is rather late in the boot process, wonder if that is causing issues.
Maybe the drivers for that need to be added to the initramfs so it's available earlier in the boot process.

Do you have an UART so you can follow the boot process and it's output?
The output on the screen is not all there messages, some are not visible unless you use a UART.
This is often rather helpful to debug.

Also can you show me the boot.ini file, especially the setenv bootrootfs line.

You mean before the Kernel update it was working?

Can you show me the content of boot folder? ls -l /boot
going back to a previous Kernel "should" be easy.

Yes, before kernel update (and 95 other packages), for about half year.
In the boot there are all files in place: 180+ and 231+, boot.ini, all dtb, uInitrd, zImage. (i have windows to handle this)
Is it will be enough?

Windows will be enough..
but I'd like to see what exactly is in the folder, sizes of files and such.

If you use cmd under Windows go into the drive with the boot.ini and such and type "dir" it should show the same information I need.
Can you send that to me please?

Also, yes from there you can also go back to the old Kernel, but I'd like to see if something else is not correct before that :)

Re: [OS] Debian Stretch

so there is one tiny issue I can see.
uInitrd and uInitrd-4.14.231+ have different sizes, but should be the same.
In fact uInitrd and uInitrd-4.14.180+ have the same size, so it seems it's still using the "old" one.

Here is what you can try:
1. delete uInitrd
2. make a copy of uInitrd-4.14.231+ and name it uInitrd
3. try to boot and see if it works

If it doesn't work and you want to go back to Kernel 4.14.180 you:
1. delete uInitrd
2. make a copy of uInitrd-4.14.180+ and name it uInitrd
3. delete zImage
4. make a copy of vmlinuz-4.14.180+ and name it zImage

that should be all that needed to go back to the old Kernel, but I suggest trying to get the new Kernel to work first.
