..., would it be save/recommended to upgrade the kernel as described some posts earlier here in this thread?
as described where?
Debian Stretch and Debian Buster use the same Kernel. The Kernel is installed from a different repository that is the same for all OS.

deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian buster main contrib non-free

Code: Select all

aptitude install linux-image-4.19.0-5-armmp

That Kernel is from Debian itself (not from me), it is not the Kernel for the ODROID XU4 (but a general ARM kernel) and does not provide all features available on ODROID XU4.
It probably works for headless servers, but may not support things like HDMI output, GPU support, G2D support and other features.

...as the XU4 is a NAS, nothing but ssh, mdadm, samba needed. But are there any problems to be expected in the future with a mix of the "standard ARM" kernel and the buster packages added to the "old" stretch install based on the special kernel?

when you updated to buster there is no old Stretch stuff installed it's all being replaced.
If the Kernel from Debian Buster works for you on the XU4 and your usecase I doubt it will cause any issue if use that for future updates.

I think I will give it a try, otherwise I try again to get a functional copy of the old SD-card and nothing (except for a few hours to get dd running) will be lost.

Many thanks!

Although I removed all older kernels and other old stuff, apparently /boot is too small for the operation (the standard ARM kernel is much larger than the custom XU4 kernel):

After I saw the error message posted in my last post, the odroid was basically dead, no reboot ("command unknown" or something like that) no nothing, I had to pull the plug for reboot and the machine luckily came back with the old kernel and 0% free space on boot...

The kernel image I downloaded had 20+MB on boot plus the different files (initrd.img, vmlinuz etc.) for the new kernel.

I have removed anything related to the new kernel and have now here:

Code: Select all

/boot# ls -al
total 37175
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 16384 Jan 1 1970 .
drwxr-xr-x 21 root root 1024 Nov 26 10:09 ..

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 9806 Mar 24 2018 boot.ini.orig
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 151244 Nov 2 07:44 config-4.14.150+
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 56225 Nov 26 10:13 exynos5422-odroidxu4.dtb
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 7906045 Nov 24 16:06 initrd.img-4.14.150+
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2702459 Nov 2 07:44 System.map-4.14.150+

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 5695952 Nov 2 07:44 vmlinuz-4.14.150+
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 5695952 Nov 18 17:26 zImage
and

Code: Select all

/boot# df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
udev 930M 0 930M 0% /dev
tmpfs 200M 7.4M 193M 4% /run
/dev/mmcblk1p2 13G 967M 12G 8% /
tmpfs 998M 0 998M 0% /dev/shm
tmpfs 5.0M 0 5.0M 0% /run/lock
tmpfs 998M 0 998M 0% /sys/fs/cgroup
/dev/mmcblk1p1 71M 37M 35M 52% /boot
/dev/md0 3.6T 1.6T 1.9T 47% /mnt/md0
IMHO /boot should have some 200MB or so, with modern SD-card no problem to have even more...

_______________

Edit: The system on this SD-card was basically dead, as "reboot" or "shutdown -h now" all resulted in "command not found. I put in a fresh copy of the original Stretch install and now everything back to normal. Don't know if I give it another try. Maybe better to wait for a new Buster image...
kind regards

On newer images it's bigger, the image was still the same from Debian Jessie back then with Kernel 3.10 which is much much smaller and size was never an issue.
Only with Kernel 4.x the size became an issue, but newer images do have larger boot partitions.
You should be able to resize bootfs and rootfs via gparted relatively easy using another Linux PC though.

can you check if the Realtek Firmware drivers are installed?

Code: Select all

Generally it should work and the drivers should be part of the Kernel.

There are some known issues with Firefox and Chromium in different versions.
For Debian Stretch you probably have to install a specific version to make it run.

Try:

Code: Select all

apt-get install chromium=63.0.3239.84-1~deb9u1
apt-mark hold chromium

on the first post there is explained what you need to do to activate hardware acceleration on Chromium.
Please note, that this only is for hardware accelerated browsing. There is NO video hardware acceleration for Chromium.

For hardware accelerated video playback you can either use Kodi (which is recommended) or ffplay from the ffmpeg package. This commandline tool allows you to define v4l2_m2m as a decoder which is hardware accelerated on the ODROID XU4.
But I highly recommend Kodi instead. I also recommend installing Kodi via setup-odroid as it will setup required firmware and stuff for you automatically.

On the desktop you could als try "mpv" as a video player... although not hardware accelerated it should be fast enough for most videos anyway.

Your release date is a bit off ;)
The release date mentioned in your video might match the XU4Q but the device is MUCH MUCH older and was first released in 2014 as the ODROID XU3 which had the same SoC but a different board layout.
The ODROID XU4 was released in 2015.
So your release date with 2016 is about 2 years off ;)
That's something people always forget when they compare the XU4 with a RPi4 or something and are like "well it has no 4k, it has no H265, it has no on board Wifi".

Sadly in Debian Stretch the armhf packages from Debian directly for Chromium are broken, therefore I have ported the last working version of Chromium for Debian Stretch:
You can install it with:

Code: Select all

apt install chromium=63.0.3239.84-1~deb9u1
apt-mark hold chromium
That way you have a working version of Chromium. But it's good to know vivaldi is working fine as well :)

Now I see, the C2 was 2016. I didn't read the wiki well.

"ODROID - Wikipediaen.wikipedia.org › wiki › ODROID
Vertaal deze pagina
The ODROID is a series of single-board computers and tablet computers created by Hardkernel ... Release date, February 2016; 4 years ago (2016-02). Introductory price, US ... Several models of ODROID's have been released by Hardkernel. The first generation ... ODROID-XU4, 2015, Exynos 5422 Octa big.LITTLE ARM ..."

Amazing it still can perform good vs others so long after release.
My first Odroid was the C2 in 2017. So I don't know much of the history. I've always need to make at least one mistake in a video.
Thank you.

Hi @meveric

It seems that this kernel:

Linux debian-stretch 4.14.180+ #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed May 20 14:57:20 UTC 2020 armv7l GNU/Linux

is the latest present in the repo.

Questions:

1. May I test other kernels from repository like in any Linux Desktop by means of grub entries? Is there any similar tool for XU4 board in this distro?
2. Are Stretch repos in sync with debian main stretch repos?
3. Firefox is not working. I read from other area in this site a reference to: https://github.com/jdonald/firefox-armhf
4. To have the required gpu drivers, is just a matter of: apt-get install --reinstall malit628-odroid, is there any additional setting to customize?

Thanks @meveric for this distro, and your hard work.

Not directly and not how the image is currently working.
The Kernel is loaded via u-boot and boot.ini
The boot.ini points to the Kernel files that are available.
It will load the zImage file (kernel) uInitrd (Initramfs) and dtb (hardware device tree file)
For simplicity these always have the same name.
Technically a u-boot grub would have the ability to select different Kernel but you don't have any output during this stage of loading the image, so any menu available would only work via UART serial console which makes it rather unpractical.

2. Are Stretch repos in sync with debian main stretch repos?
Nothing needs to be synced, as these ARE the Debian main stretch repos. This is a standard Debiab Stretch image (for arm)
But I added new repositories, which provide my Kernel and software that I created specifically for ODROIDs. But that's on top of the standard Debian.

3. Firefox is not working. I read from other area in this site a reference to: https://github.com/jdonald/firefox-armhf
The FireFox on this image is provided by Debian (standard repos), I have no control over them.
Overall Chromium has much better arm support than FireFox. In fact if you want hardware acceleration, like WebGL support, this will only work with Chromium.

4. To have the required gpu drivers, is just a matter of: apt-get install --reinstall malit628-odroid, is there any additional setting to customize?
That depends on the setting of the image and the user you want to use to access it.
malit628-odroid is the pure GPU drivers, nothing else.
You need access to /dev/mali0, if your user is for example not part of the video group it probably doesn't have access to it, or you might actually configure access to this device first.
Also the drivers only work under X11, so you can't start a application from terminal, without X11 for example.
It also means you need to setup an X11 environment that load the appropriate X11 bindings for the GPU drivers. In our case this is the armsoc driver, which I also provide for this image.
You also need a correct xorg.conf file that tells the system to use the armsoc driver.

For easy usage I provide a tool called setup-odroid on this image, which has a small menu that allows you to install a Desktop Environment (for example MATE desktop) and it will automatically install and configure GPU drivers for you.

well the repo is hosted by @mdrjr I have very little influence in outages.
But from what I can tell it's working now, so maybe just a temporary hickup?

Hi again!

I have updated

Code: Select all

uname -a
Linux abcd.lmno.com 4.14.180+ #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed May 20 14:57:20 UTC 2020 armv7l GNU/Linux
a decent

Code: Select all

lsusb
-bash: lsusb: command not found
does not result in the expected output.

Output from

Code: Select all

which usbutils
is empty. Is usbutils that exotic so that it is not included in this distro? :-o
kind regards

no it's not exotic, it's simply not pre-installed.
Just do a apt install usbutils

Your which usbutils command is not very useful. Which only lists the path of an installed binary (in case it's included in the PATHs variable).
And since usbutils is the name of a PACKAGE not of a binary this won't work at all.
You were probably looking for

Code: Select all

apt-cache policy usbutils
which shows if a package is available or installed instead.

But as I said, it's available, you just need to install it :)

hello meveric. Thank you for your hard work in developing this image!

I am interested in using it for a project! My project is related to headless servers on many different Single Board Computers. I'm evaluating different operating system images for the ODROID XU4/HC1/HC2 right now. I like the idea of using an image which is as close to "stock" Debian as possible.

I was also looking at the armbian image "Armbian_20.08_Odroidxu4_focal_legacy_4.14.191.img.xz". Could you talk a little bit about the differences between your image and an Armbian image? (besides the obvious, that the one I specified is based on a newer ubuntu/debian version) .

I would like to ask some questions about your image. Is this an open source project, or is it proprietary to you? If it's proprietary, why? I cannot use proprietary software like this in my project for security, ethical, and technical reasons. I need to be able to read the code/configuration and build the images myself so I can verify their integrity and fix bugs as I find them. I believe I can do that with armbian, can I do it with your image?

I'm using a standard debootstrab Debian image. And just installed some basic applications that are commonly used, like vim, htop or npt, nothing that does not come from Debian itself.
I myself provided the linux header and image files for the board which is custom software for the board, but is available from hardkernel repository.
I also provide a couple of scrips started via setup-odroid which should make it easier to setup certain types of software, like installing a Desktop with the necessary drivers for desktop hardware acceleration.
Aside from that I offer a large repository with custom software optimized, or compiled for ARM devices (so for OpenGL ES instead of Desktop OpenGL most of the time).
All of which is optional but not required.
The main benefit over Armbian is probably software support, as Armbian is mainly focused on Kernel support, but does not provide software for the board.

I use default Debian repositories and software where possible. No custom software is installed by default, except for the Kernel which is required to boot the system.
Aside from that everything you install is up to you. Most of the software is standard Debian Software with no alteration.
And the software I provide, is mostly just compiled with flags for OpenGL ES and is available as opensource software as well.
There are a few software components that is closed source that I was fortunate enough to be allowed to port it to the board, but that's like two or three programs/games out of a couple hundreds.
And once again it's up to you if you install it or not.

The default image uses basic Debian software with no alterations and the Kernel. It's up to you what you want to do with the image itself.
The GPU drivers are closed source, that is nothing I can change, they are not from me, but also provided directly from HardKernel.
If you don't need GPU acceleration, you don't need to install it.

Wow, thank you for your detailed reply!

I'm actually an application developer, not a linux OS specialist or embedded software person. So while I might recognize some of the things you just explained, like "debootstrap", others I have never really worked on or used in a project before, like "linux header for the board".

I was hoping that you could point to a git repository which contains a script that you use to build your images. But I think the information you provided should be enough for me to build my own code to do this if I ever need to. I don't need OpenGL or a graphical desktop, I just want a stable Linux distribution which has images for many SBCs and works uniformly across them. Preferably debian based because that's what I'm most experienced with.

I have a friend who is a linux and embedded software specialist so perhaps I can bother him for help if I get stuck. For now I will probably just use armbian.

Hello again!

I really like the distro, especially that there is no sudo out of the box! One minor issue I always come across:

I'm logged in via ssh (opensuse Tumbleweed) and after update/full-upgrade I do a reboot. However, the console of the odroid does not exit gracefully, but rather hangs up. Only way: kill off the console window completly and start from a fresh one. Any way to fix this? :-)

Will there be a new release based on kernel 5.4 or so?

Many thanks!

Yes this is a known problem with systemd.
The original sysvinit did end all programs after another, and one point killing SSH daemon and later on the network.
When killing the SSH daemon you got disconnected from the SSH session.
systemd instead is able to start and stop services in parallel, which causes the network to be shut down at the same time (or earlier) as the SSH daemon is shut down.
The client does not receive the disconnect message as the network is already down and basically only ends the session after a timeout (waiting a couple minutes pressing a button works as well as starting a new session).
There are some guides in the internet on how to fix this.
Some involving activating some PAM modules that should take care of this.
You can probably find some guides here in the forum or searching via google.
But I was never satisfied with these solutions.

You can already update to Kernel 5.4 if you want to.
viewtopic.php?p=303023#p303023

I will probably upload a new Debian Buster image with Kernel 5.4 pre-installed.

I haven't done much testing with Kernel 5.4.
I tested GPU and made sure standard programs are working.. but I guess it should be fine for a headless NAS as it has very little requirements.
But as mad_ady said make a backup just in case.
Also you should be able to switch back to Kernel 4.14 if you want to.

For switching to old kernel I need a monitor/keyboard, right? No way on a headless setup, I guess...?

There are 3 meta (actually 4 but one is no longer in use) packages:
linux-image-armhf-odroid-xu3 -> Kernel 3.10
linux-image-4.14-armhf-odroid-xu4 -> Kernel 4.14
linux-image-5.4-armhf-odroid-xu4 -> Kernel 5.4

If you install one of these the other should be removed.
Switching back to Kernel 3.10 could be somewhat problematic as the drivers for X11 changed a lot, but switching between 4.14 and 5.4 should be fine.

The same goes for the header files, same packages just linux-headers-....

I just upgraded to kernel 5.4 and the fan and lcd on my cloudshell 2 stopped working (everything else is working though).

Also tried to go back do kernel 4.14 and I got this error:

dpkg: error processing archive /var/cache/apt/archives/linux-image-4.14.180+_4.14.180-20200520-xu4_armhf.deb (--unpack):
trying to overwrite '/boot/exynos5422-odroidhc1.dtb', which is also in package linux-image-5.4.58+ 5.4.58-20200815-xu4

(There is no such file btw).

What shoud I do? Are there new drivers for the cloudshell 2?

in Kernel 5.4 a lot of things changed.
For LCD and FAN you need to load some device tree overlays, which is currently not done automatically and it may require new u-boot, not sure I have to check on this.
The overlays are already part of the package but are not yet in the correct place (need to go to /boot as well)

If you want to go back to Kernel 4.14 you can remove linux-image-5.4.58+

Code: Select all

apt-get autoremove --purge linux-image-5.4.58+
or

Code: Select all

dpkg -r linux-image-5.4.58+
that should take care of the above issue and you should be able to install Kernel 4.14.

Thanks! I managed to go back to 4.14.

    @AreaScout
A year ago when I upgraded from jessie, I tried the armbian image and found a bug that everytime I rebooted the xu4, it couldn't find the cloudshell disk (probably the whole cloudshell board). So I needed to power cycle.

I don't know if it still happening, but I installed this stretch image and dist-upgraded to buster to install omv5 and its working well since.

No it's pretty good tested, try it on an empty card if you wish but I bet it will work without disconnects

    Hi meveric!

I've installed this OS of yours. It installed the desktop (the recommended one, MATE), but Kodi and Chromium won't work. Kodi isn't even listed under any menu. Chromium seems like it's going to open but doesn't. And yes, I tried installing Kodi through the setup-odroid command. When I press enter to install Kodi, it seems like it's going to install it but suddenly takes me back to the setup menu.

I did the whole update, upgrade, distro-upgrade, of course. Fresh install. Only thing I've installed is x11vnc and GParted.

Hmm I have to check what could be the issue.
It's been a while since I used the Debian Stretch.

Could be that for Debian Stretch you have to install a specific version of Chromium, due to a bug with the Debian Stretch packages that come directly from Debian.
    Try installing it like this:

    Code: Select all

    apt install chromium=63.0.3239.84-1~deb9u1
If that version works do a:

    Code: Select all

    apt-mark hold chromium
so it doesn't get updated accidentally

Kodi I'm not sure I have to check on that.. as I said it's been a while.

Thanks, this Chromium does work. Sucks that I won't be able to update it, though. I tried Firefox but that doesn't work either. It just crashes and opens that Mozilla Crash Reported. But I'm not surprised. Firefox never worked for me on GameStation Turbo either. Vivaldi used to work great under GST as well but an update in 2018 screwed it up and never worked since. :/

Thanks for looking up what's wrong with Kodi!
