can I uninstall uboot-odroid-xu3

Unread post by reza » Tue Mar 24, 2020 11:43 pm

a noob question.
can I uninstall uboot-odroid-xu3 from alarm repo (os installed is archlinuxarm) and still boot the system?
I am trying to see if I need the alarm repo if I dont use other packages on there.

my device is xu4.

uboot is flashed directly on the SD/eMMC card, once it's there the package that installed it should no longer be required.
But uninstalling it probably means you don't get an update anymore in case there is a update in the future.

The boot process looks like following:
BL1 -> BL2 -> uboot
uboot will mount bootfs to load boot.ini and Kernel
Kernel will mount rootfs and with that the rest of the OS.

Since your .bin file is stored on the rootfs, the system can only access it AFTER the rootfs is mounted, so in the stage after loading the Kernel.

So how is it able to access the uboot on your rootfs, that it needs in the first stage of the boot process even BEFORE bootfs or rootfs is being mounted?
It can NOT!
Therefore the uboot needs to be flased "DIRECTLY" on the SD/eMMC card:

On a hidden partition in front of the bootfs.
The .bin file is what is flashed in that system, afterwards.. the .bin file on your rootfs is just leftover of the flashing process, it's NOT USED.
