[SOLVED] Odroid XU4 - can't start OpenMediaVault 4

Unread post by Moan » Sat Feb 02, 2019 12:03 am

Hi. Today I got my Odroid XU4. It's the first device of this type I own, so please forgive me Noob questions.

I have problems installing OpenMediaVault 4.
I burned the "OMV_4_Odroid_XU4_HC1_HC2.img.xz" to microSD card using balenaEtcher.
After inserting the card to Odroid - it doesn't fully boot. As first I waited for SSH access, but then connected HDMI to my TV and I can only see the blinking white "_". After 15-20 minutes a message comes:
Give root password for maintenance (or type Control-D to continue)
Unfortunately, I'm unable to click any button as the only keyboard I have doesn't seem to work.
After manual restart, the problem repeats: 15-20 minutes waiting and then the same message.

After some hours I burned "ubuntu-18.04.1-4.14-minimal-odroid-xu4-20181203.img.xz". This one works perfectly fine, booted instantly, and I could already test SMB, AES, etc. performance.
Unfortunately, I still can't use OMV_4. The same problem persists.

What I do wrong?

Get different SD card ...

You can also try this way:
https://www.armbian.com/odroid-hc1/
Use Debian stretch image, login, create user ... update, reboot.

Proceed to armbian-config -> software -> softy -> OMV
ARMBIAN - follow on Twitter
linux for ARM development boards with user friendly development tools

Did you wait 4~5 minutes with Ethernet connection for the first booting?

Thanks for replies.
I started the same discussion at: https://forum.openmediavault.org/index. ... iaVault-4/

A few days ago I managed to install OMV using the recommended Armbian image from: https://www.armbian.com/odroid-xu4/
It worked perfectly fine, no issues.

Today I received a new SD Card and flashed "OMV_4_Odroid_XU4_HC1_HC2.img.xz". It booted correctly with no issues.

The old card was Chinese "MIXZA TOHAOLL" and the new one is "SanDisk Ultra 32GB microSDHC UHS-I A1".
I did some performance tests of both cards using "fio". Here are results:
ChineseCard_IOResults_2019-02-07-15-13-07.txt
(8.23 KiB) Downloaded 25 times
SanDiskCard_IOResults_2019-02-07-15-33-17.txt
(7.72 KiB) Downloaded 20 times
The old card seems to be better at writing, but idk...

Funny issue, but I'm glad it isn't a PSU problem.

Good to hear you solved the issue.

BTW, it is very worth to try FakeFlashTest and SD-Formatter with the strange Chinese SD card.
