Looks like it's not;
XU4

Code: Select all

grep -i zram /boot/config-3.10.96-116
x86

Code: Select all

grep -i zram /boot/config-4.4.0-31-generic
CONFIG_ZRAM=m
CONFIG_ZRAM_LZ4_COMPRESS=y
Maybe in next update :)

Not likely as we are stuck on Linux kernel 3.10 until someone patches GPU drivers and HMP into something recent (after 3.15 for zram), unless you want the (unstable?) server only 4.4 kernel for the XU4.

ZRAM is working on the XU3/XU4 my Kernel builds have ZRAM activated since end of 2015 and it's working nicely on the XU3/XU4.
But it doesn't have LZ4 compression, which makes it less effective than on the C2.
But even on the older Exynos 4 boards with Kernel 3.8 ZRAM is available and working.

By several orders of magnitude... but really if you use either you should just upgrade to something with more ram.

Next update will have the zram driver. The latest -117 update includes the zram module.

couple of issues with 16.04

1) icons in Libreoffice writer are white (outlines, but not filled in)
2) arduino doesn't display menus (from sudo apt-get install arduino)

I thought it might be a bbp setting, but couldn't see a setting like there was in 15.04 boot.ini to change from 32 to 24 bbp.

On the positive side: Pithos works! firefox works, gforth seems great

us.archive.ubuntu.com are not the official repositories for ARM boards.

If you have a fresh installation you should have "ports.ubuntu.com" and nothing else in the list.

Re: Ubuntu 16.04 for XU3/XU4

Post by DiabboVerdde » Tue Aug 02, 2016 8:57 am

I am having difficulties on making wpa_supplicant work on my XU4 16.04. I used the same config files as I had for 15.10, but it simply refuses to work. Objective here is to connect the wi-fi network at boot time, without having to log-on.

Then after some research I found out that all network interfaces are using the new udev "predictable" names instead of the simpler, old names like "wlan0" as I had in 15.10. I tried several tricks to rename the interface and also tried to use the predictable name on wpa_supplicant but nothing I tried so far made it work. I thought the option "net.ifname=0" on the kernel parameters on boot.ini was supposed to prevent udev from using the predictable interface names, but if it is, it's not working.

What I tried with no success:

1) adding the "biosdevname=0" option to the kernel parameters - no change
2) disabling the predictable names as described here: https://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Softwa ... faceNames/ - wifi interface didn't come up and ubuntu could not even shutdown properly.
3) All udev rule creation rules proposed here: http://askubuntu.com/questions/689070/n ... ev-changes - Most of these solutions caused the wifi interface to not even come up and ubuntu could not even shutdown properly.

So, I'm open to suggestions on how to make wpa_supplicant work on this ODROID version of 16.04 for the XU4. I keep thinking that the key will be making the wifi interface to be named wlan0, but since nothing I tried so far worked, I have to ask if anyone can take a look at the interface names.

My wifi card is a TP-Link TL-WN725N, that works perfectly on both 15.10 and 16.04. Only wpa_supplicant refuses to work.

Regards,

Geoff

Refer this link to make a traditional naming to the network interface node.

Is there a sort of guide for how to make these images and install the software? I have tried chroot and Ubuntu Core, and failed to figure out debuild.
I was hoping to make a desktop image with as little of anything else installed, save a few programs I would like as part of my custom image.

Also, I have this irrational need for self-sufficiency and less for HMP so long as all the cores work (or the A15s anyway) and the GPU, so perhaps I could try working with mainline (or is upstream better?)? I am not sure what the issues with it are, though.

My end goal is one image that I can try to keep updated or maintain with the newest software and kernel, but due to the boot method, GPU, fan (Did I miss something else?), is that necessarily possible?
If I can't open it, I don't own it.

Having an issue getting the Kodi TVheadend addon to work (kodi-pvr-hts). When kodi starts, it reports that it failed to start this addon. Anyone have a hint for how to get this one working?

Hi, for this new Ubuntu 16.04, It's seems no need to resize file system partition and update kernel as we did for ubuntu 14.04. It just done for us. Am I right? Thanks.

I was having the same problem and it went away with an `apt-get dist-upgrade`.
Yah HK needs to release another image because the khubd really bogs down setup.

It seems the unresolved Chromium crashing that plagued 15.04 is exactly the same on 16.04 . Every time you try to play video bang, reboots.

I tried to use Firefox to play something from my Plex server but seems there is no hardware acceleration at all ?

It plays slowly and there is just white noise for sound.

FireFox has no hardware acceleration.
Only Chromium has hardware acceleration for browsing and WebGL.
Currently there is no Video acceleration on any browser (might change in future)

Is there any Odroid where there is hardware acceleration ?

Also is there a reason VNC is slow ? not my network connection or is it a general issue with VNC ?

All ODROIDs have hardware acceleration, but I guess you have problems to separate the different forms of hardware accelerations in existence.

Not sure what you consider "slow" VNC in general is not the fastest protocol, since it's constantly sending JPEG data. Which is not very efficient.
It's good enough to check up on things, browse a little the web if need be, but it's not meant for watching a video, or playing games in realtime.
Donate to support my work on the ODROID GameStation Turbo Image for U2/U3 XU3/XU4 X2 X C1 as well as many other releases.
Check out the Games and Emulators section to find some of my work or check the files in my repository to find the software i build for ODROIDs.
If you want to add my repository to your image read my HOWTO integrate my repo into your image.

No I'm not looking to play video over VNC or play games but even browsing or clicking through menus is slow......

Ok I have found a much faster remote access program called Nomachine.

https://www.nomachine.com/

The difference between this and VNC is amazing.

VNC would be fine only I want to use the Xu3Lite with the SDRPlay and be able to tune the receiver without that horrid lag in VNC and this seems like it will do the trick nicely.

I want to be able to use the XU3 as a low power server for the SDRPlay and probably have remote access also but If I can't use it remotely then I will live with it , I just don't want to be physically tied to one machine to use the receiver.

For those of you on the Minimul image.. be sure to install (dnsmasq) to fix the Ethernet from showing up like eXXXXXXXX instead of eth0. Some programs have a hard time finding the name if it's not default.

People keep saying "Some programs won't work without eth0" but I have not seen one yet.

Well some things that I'm working on are hard coded to eth0.. so having to change it up just for one build doesn't make sense..

How can I flash this to the eMMC? I've tried using Win32DiskImager but it fails to boot with a CRC error, so thinking that the adapters were the problem, I flashed it to the SDcard, booted and then DD'd the image to the eMMC while it was attached to the XU4 but it still fails to boot giving the same CRC error, am I using the wrong image?
