Thank you guys. Wonderful job!
I fully agree 15.04 and 15.10 will not be supported anymore. But please keep supporting 14.04 by end of this year because 16.04 still have a few critical compatibility issues with my old software.
Anyway I will try this newest one this weekend on my spare XU3.

Thanks.

I noticed 3 strange things on the minimal 16.04 img;

Code: Select all

> dmesg | grep -i error | grep -v "Opts: errors=remount-ro"
[    5.049885] [c0] dwmmc_exynos 12220000.dwmmc2: data CRC error

[    5.073716] [c7] mmc_host mmc1: Tuning error: cmd.error:-84, data.error:-115

Code: Select all

> apt-get clean
W: Problem unlinking the file apt-fast - Clean (21: Is a directory)

Code: Select all

> shutdown -h now
[  348.765797] [c0] SysRq : HELP : loglevel(0-9) reboot(b) crash(c) show-all-locks(d) terminate-all-tasks(e) memory-full-oom-kill(f) kill-all-tasks(i) thaw-filesystems(j) sak(k) show-backtrace-all-active-cpus(1) ...
So far no show stoppers, I'll let it run.

This os image is quite stable and reliable. Thanks again.
I hope the kodi exit problem is solved soon.

Do you guys have a plan to release a server or minimal version in near future?

I hate to have to say it, but here i got exactly the same Kodi problem with the library that is described in this thread:
http://forum.odroid.com/viewtopic.php?p=126736#p126736

Playing files directly works fine. Adding files to the library and the accessing the library crashes Kodi and after a restart Kodi crashes after its splash screen.

Since even with 15.10 many people seem to have been able to use Kodi without problems, I wish someone could tell me what the heck I am doing wrong?
I just flashed everything according to these instructions:
http://odroid.com/dokuwiki/doku.php?id= ... hing_tools
Then I booted the Odroid, created a new user, set all the language settings to german, downloaded a demo file and tried Kodi. What could I possibly have done wrong? Everything else seems to work like a charm.

If you do not mind patching and recompiling Kodi yourself, you can use the attached patch.

Thank you both!

I will try both solutions. May I ask what actually causes the problem? I had the same crash with 15.10 as well and there obviously never was a solution for it or I was to blind to see it. I always expected that there would come an official update, but it never worked for me.

MySQL should not be a problem. About Git I have no idea, but I guess I will make it. Just a short question: Do I just take this repository to get the sourcecode:
https://github.com/xbmc/xbmc?
or is there a special one just for the Odroids?

@rumsdikuh,
Try the workaround and let me know if it works.
If it does I'll add the said patch to our Kodi and see if improves :(

Is that a known issue?

Not that I know of, I just noticed the error seemed to be in an optional component.

The issue is known to occur on all ARM platforms. See this bug report (this is where I got the patch from): http://trac.kodi.tv/ticket/16609

However, that may take a couple of days until I figure out how to compile that stuff...

I was able to setup a static IP but I have not been able to get systemd-resolved.service/resolvconf/dnsmasq working yet.

I think for Ubuntu you should use network manager

Use how exactly? systemd is the backend, dnsmasq is installed, and resolvconf exists... I did not have this issue on the x86 version of Ubuntu, looking for the difference...

If that works on x86 16.04 it should work on 16.04 arm..

Maybe network manager is conflicting?
I don't know.. I never used systemd to configure a network card before.

ah there is no network-manager on ubuntu server but there is on the XU3 minimal image.

Code: Select all

apt-get purge -y network-manager && apt autoremove -y
fixed it for me.

Re: Ubuntu 16.04 for XU3/XU4

Post by rlm667@yahoo.com » Tue Jul 12, 2016 4:29 am

Hi, thanks so much for releasing this image. I am having a problem with video however. First, I am using an HDMI to DVI cable which I have used for quite a while with 14.04 on the same XU3. When using the same setup with 16.04 I find that on one monitor, the screen will blank for 2 to 5 seconds when opening various apps or windows, such as if I click on the date to display the calendar. The screen just goes completely blank and then will re-appear. If I plug in a different monitor, (different manufacturer), I get no display at all. If I insert the 14.04 SD card I have been using, both monitors work fine. I have tried this in both an XU3 and an XU4 with the same results. I've tried uncommenting the setenv line in boot.ini to force 1080P without monitor data but this had no effect. It appears to be strictly a video output issue since x11vnc correctly shows display 0 with no blanking when looking at it from another computer, even while the display plugged into the 16.04 system is blank. Additionally, the left side of the monitor has a solid purple line a few pixels wide right against the edge. I saw this line with 15.04 but the monitor did not blank. The same monitor running 14.04 does not have this line.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I thought so but went back and checked. If I did, it didn't stick so I did it again. That seems to have done it. No Purple line and no blanking. Thank you.

Does this address the 'Exit' issue? Kodi just hangs on exit and I have to kill it manually.

It was some troubles with servers at Canonical, no need to reflash.

I am not sure if this is normal, but I just found that Xorg is causing 100% CPU load on a single 2GHz core under some circumstances. I notized it when I opened the background image selection window, when I was in the system and ressource monitor and in the update manager. On the desktop with no program open it is idling at about 1%. When I open Firefox and do nothing it is also at about 1% and when I scroll on a website the load is between 15 to 30%.
The GUI feels kind of sluggish wenn it is at 100% load.
Does that sound normal or could it be a bug?
It is not really critical for me, but I just wanted to mention it.
Overall it feels a bit slower than i earlier image versions.
As I said yesterday, Kodi works fine now and playback is smooth as long it is fullscreen as expected. I had one movie that was stuttering a little when I played it in the background while navigating through the library, but that seems reasonable to me.

Xorg is old and hugely inefficient so I'd bet it's an old bug.

It seems to me that the fan on the CU4 runs more often, if not near continuous, under Ubuntu 16.4 over Ubuntu 15.10. Is this to be expected?

Likely you changed the governor on 15.10 and forgot to on 16.04.
Also check top to make sure you are mostly idle.

I don't recall doing so, in fact, I don't quite know how. Is there any reference on how to adjust the governor? Thanks!

Actually, I looked into the load issues, and I see the process khubd consistently taking 50% or more of CPU even when the device is otherwise "idle", and it is by far the largest load generator. This Ubuntu question indicates it might be related to spurious USB hot plug events. Does anyone know what what might be causing this?

I was having the same problem and it went away with an `apt-get dist-upgrade`.

Flashed 16.04 on mu Xu4. I'm seeing lots of screen tearing in X. Seems like video driver is not quite right. Is this expected? I was expecting real fluid video...

So I had thought it wasn't using the mali driver, but it appears to be. A bit more digging and I see there is hardware accel for OpenGL but not X11 itself :( I guess I'll give android a try for now

My plan now is to get Wayland working with latest gnome. See how that goes :)

Time to say goodbye to X11 on this device :)

seems there is full GPU support for Wayland; not sure on stability,.

Thanks, ya. I read that same info (assumably from the same person) in another thread last night. So still a waiting game for a driver which merges the functionality and some bug fixes. The good news is they are working on it... Just have to be patient.

Unfortunately X11 is a mess on here with current drivers. Usable yes, but it will make you feel like you stepped back almost 20 years in terms of 2d video performance. For now I'll stick with Android as the GUI is MUCH more fluid than X11. Then eventually switch over to wayland/weston/gnome.

Too bad Android feels so claustrophonic as a desktop O/S. I do have chrome O/S source pulled and have built it for other devices; I unfortunately just dont have a lot of time to be working it for the Xu4 as well..

Outside of these quirks which will eventually get resolved. I am liking my ODROIDS. I have the other running Kodi and gaming EMU. Works great.

I purchased the Xu4 soley to use as a thinclient/GUI O/S... I'll get there eventually...

Looks like it's not;
XU4

Code: Select all

grep -i zram /boot/config-3.10.96-116
x86

Code: Select all

grep -i zram /boot/config-4.4.0-31-generic
CONFIG_ZRAM=m
CONFIG_ZRAM_LZ4_COMPRESS=y

Locked
