@hmmdhassan, did you try the kernel in my original post? That has the patches needed to make the MFC work

So I'd like to give https://github.com/ioft/linux kernel a try on my XU3.
Would odroidxu4_defconfig be compatible?
Also which dtb should I use and maybe some hints on the boot.ini flags?

EDIT:
Well that didn't work.
Using the zImage and exynos5422-odroidxu3.dtb built from ioft's tree using the odroidxu4_defconfig will only give me a red led.

@cberner do you know if this enables encoding through the MFC as well as decoding? Is it just accessible through v4l2 as normal?

@fnoop, I actually haven't tested decoding only encoding, and that worked fine via v4l2

Glad @Catscrash mentioned this thread in a different ethernet thread.

I'm going to wait until 4.7 becomes RC in mainline before testing again because there's a bunch of new changes, one of which I have great interest in: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=n ... W-Thursday

If I still have the ethernet issue, I should be able to just apply those cherry-picked PRs. Good to know that option is there.

You need exynos5422-odroidxu4.dtb for 4.6 kernel. You have to change your boot.ini to point to this dtb as well.

@tombriden : if I cloned your actual linux master branch, may I use the default exynos_defconfig or should I take the odroidxu4_defconfig from 4.4.5, committed on 16 Mar?

odroidxu4_defconfig should be fine to start from, I'm pretty sure that's what I started with in 4.4. the exynos_defconfig is identical to linux mainline so that should work too, though I've not tried it

Recommendation for 4.x kernel?

Could those with experience chime in what would be the smoothest option at the moment to get a recent (4.4, 4.5, 4.6, 4.7?) kernel on the XU4?

I want to experiment with different hardware like DVB-T2 adapters and need something relatively recent. I don't mind compiling and installing, but would like to avoid being stuck in a suboptimal configuration without knowing it. Also, what can I expect to miss? Only the Mali subsystem driver?

Kernel 4.7-rc3 works well on my XU4 after following this instruction.

HDMI output also works nicely. But USB 3.0 XHCI drivers seem to have some issues.
If you don't use any USB 3.0 devices, it is pretty good enough to make many different server applications since there is no mali gpu driver in the mainline kernel yet.
I hope somebody find a workaround to have USB 3.0 speed......

This is a bit of a letdown since I have the cloudshell with 2TB drive attached via USB3. If it is USB2 speed, this would be good enough for the moment. Nothing which can't be worked around until a fix comes. Thanks!

Thanks @tombriden! Sorry for repeating this, but its not clear. If the odroid fan script doesn't work anymore on 4.x, it that because a module (.config) matter or it is necessary some patch? In both cases which exactly?

Linux 4.7 Boot Failure

I found 4.7R4 mainline stops booting around when the USB stuff is being pulled up.
I'm coming straight from 4.4, so don't know if the booting issue is also in 4.5 or 4.6.

And what changes in that fork makes you think the kernel will fully boot (or at least get past the USB stuff)?

That 54 second mark is me pulling out the USB before unplugging the main power (I power my usb hub and that, for some reason, will still power the odroid when I unplug the main power (different thread)).

One thing I haven't tried yet, is to try running 4.7 without any peripherals attached. I'll do that when my mind is refreshed from sleep. I may also try 4.6 mainline to see if booting fails there since 4.4 was the last kernel I built.

I knew about differencing, but didn't know if there was a particular reason to try your branch other than for the sake of trying something. Someone could say "try rebooting three times" and I'd still question what is it in the suggestion of rebooting that is expected to fix the problem.

Their is series of patches discus on mainline related to power sequence of the usb hub.
It's a common problem for all the usb device so generally we will have better approach on USB devices
in near future.

@umiddelb Does it work the HDMI with 4.7.0-rc-4 new_master? I have a non native HDMI-Monitor which uses HDMI-Adapter and this doesn't work anymore even I tried with EDID modules and enabling many config modules that they were in legacy Kernel. Do you have some tip?

  • - Kernel 4.7.0-rc-4 from @umiddlb = @iotf repository, branch new_master https://github.com/ioft/linux works
    - make exynos_defconfig instead of porting and make odroidxu4_defconfig
    - Tested 8 cores up and running. To achieve this, I had to disable CONFIG_BIG_LITTLE=y and CONFIG_BL_SWITCHER=y
    - I added following kernel features Multi Core Schedulers Support and SMT Scheduler Support, which in fact I don't know if they are really necessary
    - Small cores max freq 1,3GHz and big cores 1,8 GHz instead of 1,4GHz and 2,0GHz
    - I disabled Wireless and IPv6, enabled FUSE, IOMM and EDID
    - Still not possible to have HDMI working to follow the boot log process. @umiddelb, possible a pastebin with your .config?
    - fan runs depending on the CPUs load
    - uas driver working, which was not the case with 4.7.0.rc-2, showing dmesg problems with streams, but bad performance, this could be the scheduling mechanism and not the uas driver itself
Regarding performance, I get worst IO values than with 4.7.0.rc-2 testing harddisk even the UAS was not active :-(

I'm running headless as well, but without UART, HDMI was my last chance to see where it was hanged the boot process -for example due to network interface problems, etc-. Beside of the thema: I received an UART from ebay-kleinanzeigen. Pollin doesn't deliver them anymore. The issue with the HDMI is now irrelevant for me.

Any 1.7 Volt UART - USB device will work, you can use female breadboard cables to connect to the XU4 console pin header.

I compiled kernel from here:

Kernel boots almost OK, HDMI working, ethernet working, USB2 OK, but USB3 no at all :( And I dont know why.
I tried several options in menuconfig, and several dtbs but no success. What I should try to enable USB3?
My root is on SDD/SATA-to-USB3 adapter, and currently i could boot only if adapter connected to USB2 or using old 3x kernel.

Maybe you want to try instead the new_master branch from iotf repository (https://github.com/ioft/linux). This has 4.7-rc5 and the patches for USB3. I'm using it.

why is the Bus 6 important and not Bus 4, for example? I thought that only the rate [5000] and protocoll [uas/usb-storage/xhci] were important.

All i did was using the config exactly like documented at Samsung´s blog.

What i changed is:
- Use this kernel https://github.com/ioft/linux (new_master) branch
- Use the config that comes with it -> "make exynos_defconfig"
- Enable CONFIG_EXYNOS_IOMMU
- Disable CONFIG_BIG_LITTLE,CONFIG_SCHED_MC, CONFIG_BL_SWITCHER

Basically, it is what was mentioned here by jobenvil:

By the way: What is the problem that prevents odroid from configuring it like this for Ubuntu 16.04 Image ? Is there sth. missing for Mesa / X11 ?

I've been using odroidxu4_defconfig from new_master on ioft.

It has CONFIG_EXYNOS_IOMMU=y

The rest you mentioned are not set (does that mean disabled?) in the config except
CONFIG_BIG_LITTLE=y

Does this need to be disabled / removed?

Odroid XU4 has 6 usb hub and three controller xhci and exynos-ehic and exynos-ohci.
xHIC is used for USB 3.0 and is backward control to support usb 2.0.

Bus 6,5,4 are xhci-hcd supported so you can have usb speed from 480M to 5000M.
So your 2 USB 3.0 ports should get configured to bus 4.

Hm, I've included this commit as well in my kernel source tree, but the r8152 is assigned to bus #6 (like it should be).

I observe that the xhci-hcd extends not only to USB hub ports 6,5,4 AND 3 too, given last example from @umiddelb:

I have my doubts that buses 6,5,4 (and maybe 3) are hardcoded to use xhci-hcd. In @tobetter new image we find that buses that use xhci-hcd are 1,2,3 and 4. Like here:

Is this list that I get OK? When we observe, we meet all requirements like propperly ratio speed, protocol and single bus use in case of rtl ethernet driver.

I am trying to find upstream solution to the problem so that we don't keep wondering how it should work.
I wonder why their is this inconstancy in registration of the usb bus. It should be as per HK 3.10.y.

besides the usb3 instability and mali, what other things don't work on the xu4?

Actually I have tried to integrate latest Mali kernel driver but their are lots of TODO stuff to handle.

What will be power domain used for Mali midgard.
Do we need latest libary for new ABI.
XU3 support g2d/g3d hardware acceleration.
IF some body have some input please share.

I'm having a problem when booting, sometimes (roughly a third of the time) I get these errors on boot and the onboard Ethernet doesn't work:
