Unable to boot after flashing the Ubuntu in odroid XU4

Post by Susan »

Hello,

I am unable to boot the odroidXU4 (blue led does not light up) after flashing the ubuntu with either 22.04 or 24.04 version.
I use the below command to flash the ubuntu for odroidXU4.

Code: Select all

sudo dd if=ubuntu-22.04-6.1-minimal-odroid-xu4-20230905.img of=/dev/sdb bs=4M conv=fsync
I downloaded the ubuntu image from the below link from Official US West Coast:
1. For ubuntu 22.04, [url] https://odroid.in/ubuntu_22.04lts/XU3_XU4_MC1_HC1_HC2/ [\url]. I tired both minimal and mate. Neither of them does not boot after flashing.
ubuntu-22.04-6.1-minimal-odroid-xu4-20230905.img.xz
ubuntu-22.04-6.1-mate-odroid-xu4-20230905.img.xz
2. For ubuntu 24.04, [url] https://odroid.in/ubuntu_24.04lts/XU3_XU4_MC1_HC1_HC2/ [\url]. I tired both minimal and mate. Neither of them does not boot after flashing.
ubuntu-24.04-6.6-minimal-odroid-xu4-20240506.img.xz
ubuntu-24.04-6.6-mate-odroid-xu4-20240506.img.xz

After flashing, I make sure the switch is located at the emmc side before power is turned on.
Since odroid XU4 encounter booting issue, I tested flashing the same emmc card for odroid N2+. OdroidN2+ does not encounter this issue.

Therefore, may I know should I try using different link like official US East Coast, official EU Germany, Official Korea Mirror?
What is the difference between minimal and mate? How to differentiate which one is suitable for odoridXU4?
Is my flashing a proper way of flashing odroid XU4? If no, would you suggest a proper way to flash odoridXU4?

Can I get the below ubuntu version as the above links do not work for me?
1. Ubuntu 22.04 with kernel 5 and
2. Ubuntu 24.04 with kernel 6

Thank you.

The images in the links are known to work fine.

Is the eMMC module you used our official product made with an Orange colored PCB?

Please try this OS image with Etcher to narrow down root causes.
https://wiki.odroid.com/odroid-xu4/os_i ... e/20230905

Etcher: https://etcher.balena.io/

Also check the md5sum value too.

Hello odroid,
Thank you for suggestion.
Can I install the linux image via the command? Because I only can access remotely.
May I know how can I check md5sum value and when do I need to check that value?

Hello odroid,

May I know how to use etcher?
I did the below procedure but cannot use etcher to upgrade the os image.
1. I downloaded ETCHER FOR LINUX X64 (64-BIT) (ZIP) and pasted the zip file to the odroidN2Plus to run etcher and upgrade XU4 os image to emmc card.
2. commanded "unzip balenaEtcher-linux-x64-1.19.21.zip".
Output is as below:

Code: Select all

odroid@odroidN2plus:~$ unzip balenaEtcher-linux-x64-1.19.21.zip
Archive: balenaEtcher-linux-x64-1.19.21.zip
   creating: balenaEtcher-linux-x64/
  inflating: balenaEtcher-linux-x64/chrome_100_percent.pak
  inflating: balenaEtcher-linux-x64/vk_swiftshader_icd.json
  inflating: balenaEtcher-linux-x64/chrome_crashpad_handler
  inflating: balenaEtcher-linux-x64/icudtl.dat
  inflating: balenaEtcher-linux-x64/LICENSES.chromium.html
  inflating: balenaEtcher-linux-x64/libffmpeg.so
  inflating: balenaEtcher-linux-x64/snapshot_blob.bin
  inflating: balenaEtcher-linux-x64/libvk_swiftshader.so
    linking: balenaEtcher-linux-x64/balenaEtcher  -> /home/runner/work/etcher/etcher/out/balenaEtcher-linux-x64/balena-etcher
  inflating: balenaEtcher-linux-x64/LICENSE
  inflating: balenaEtcher-linux-x64/libvulkan.so.1
  inflating: balenaEtcher-linux-x64/v8_context_snapshot.bin
  inflating: balenaEtcher-linux-x64/balena-etcher
finishing deferred symbolic links:
  balenaEtcher-linux-x64/balenaEtcher -> /home/runner/work/etcher/etcher/out/balenaEtcher-linux-x64/balena-etcher

After this, when I check home directory, there is no above symbolic link: /home/runner/work/etcher/etcher/out/balenaEtcher-linux-x64/balena-etcher
3. After unzip, I am not sure which one I should run inside the unzipped balenaEtcher-linux-x64. I give full permission to 2 balenaEtcher and run each.
4. The one with a symbolink balenaEtcher gives error of the link "balenaEtcher" is broken. Move it to Trash?
Another balenaetcher does not respond when I click it.

Therefore, I also downloaded balenaEtcher-1.7.9-ia32.AppImage and pasted it to the odroidN2+. After providing the full permission and run it, it also does not respond.
So I open the terminal and command <code> ./balenaEtcher-1.7.9-ia32.AppImage </code>, it gives below error

Code: Select all

odroid@odroidN2plus:~$ ./balenaEtcher-1.7.9-ia32.AppImage
-bash: ./balenaEtcher-1.7.9-ia32.AppImage: cannot execute binary file: Exec format error
May I know procedure to use the etcher?

Your host computer should be an x86 PC to run the Etcher.

Hello Odroid,
I am using 4.4.0-210-generic #242-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 16 09:57:56 UTC 2021 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux as a host PC.
Scenario 1
When I tried running

Code: Select all

./balenaEtcher-1.7.9-ia32.AppImage
, it gives the error of No such file or directory. I already give full permission to that AppImage file.

Code: Select all

ls balenaEtcher-1.7.9-ia32.AppImage
balenaEtcher-1.7.9-ia32.AppImage

./balenaEtcher-1.7.9-ia32.AppImage
-bash: ./balenaEtcher-1.7.9-ia32.AppImage: No such file or directory
I don't understand why it gives no such file or directory although the AppImage file exists.

Scenario 2
Then I use balenaEtcher-linux-x64-1.19.21.zip file. After unzipped, running balena-etcher file gives the error of
could not display "balena-etcher" there is no application installed for 'shared library' files.[\quote]
The another balenaEtcher gives the same error of
link 'balenaEtcher' is broken. Move it to trash??[\quote]

would you suggest how to upgrade linux os for xu4?

If your x86_64 Linux PC runs Debian or Ubuntu, try this .deb package installation method.

Hello Odroid,
My PC is using Ubuntu OS.
I download .deb package from the above link and when I install using

Code: Select all

sudo apt install ./balena-etcher_1.19.21_amd64.deb
[\code], it gives the below error:

[code]
After this operation, 406 MB of additional disk space will be used.
Get:1 /home/micron/balena-etcher_1.19.21_amd64.deb balena-etcher amd64 1.19.21 [110 MB]

Could you suggest how can I solve the issue?
May I know do I need to download only .deb file or need to download all the files from the github?

Try XU4 with a microsd card first, make sure to change the switch position on XU4 to boot from microsd.
It helps norrow down a issue.

If you are using eMMC that came with ODROID-N2, it won't boot on XU4 without some extra steps.

A .deb file should be enough.
Which Ubuntu version do you run on your PC? I think you are running a very old unmanaged version without regular update.
I can't reproduce the issue on Ubuntu 22.04 either 24.04.

Or, try googling. For example https://github.com/balena-io/etcher/issues/3579
