Ubuntu 22.04 for ODROID XU4

Post by parkernathan »

Has Ubuntu 22.04 been released for the ODROID XU4 yet, and if so, has anyone upgraded yet?

Thanks!

I ran the upgrade. So far so good.

This message came up during the upgrade:

Code: Select all

Some third party entries in your sources.list were disabled. You can
re-enable them after the upgrade with the 'software-properties' tool
or your package manager.
I'm not sure if I need to do anything with this. All that's on my XU4 is Ubuntu Minimal plus AdGuard.

Thanks!

Yes, I think you have just blocked your way to Hardkernel repositories.
But that is fine if you only plan to use CPU and LAN, I think.

May I ask why would you need the most recent Ubuntu on something that runs headless?

We may need several weeks to make 22.04 update releases.

I probably didn't need 22.04 yet, but I went ahead and went for it since it was offered. I probably should have waited a few weeks for official ODROID Support.

I looks like I can manually re-enable Hardkernel's Repositories once Hardkernel offers 22.04 versions. Once they do, if someone can provide me with the command to do so, I'll give it a try.

Worse case is I could backup my AdGuard settings, re-flash the drive with an official image of Ubuntu, then re-install AdGuard and restore my settings. I probably won't have to do that though.

It looks like I'll be able to add the Hardkernel Repositories via apt once the 22.04 repositories are offered, similar to this:

viewtopic.php?t=18945

Here are my current repositories after upgrading:

Code: Select all

sudo apt update
Hit:1 http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports jammy InRelease
Hit:2 http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports jammy-updates InRelease
Hit:3 http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports jammy-backports InRelease
Hit:4 http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports jammy-security InRelease

We may need a week to release a XU4 Ubuntu 22.04 minimal image since we need to fix some MFC video decode drivers.

Is it time to fully upgrade to 22.04 from earlier version?

It's interesting to think that the XU4, as old as it is, is still such a powerful presence as to warrant new software images.

Ah.. I forgot the XU3/XU4 was introduced in '2014 summer.
It is already eight years old. :P
But we are still shipping a few thousand of XU4 series to industrial customers every month.

Long live XU4, I also use mine as a daily backup server, Kodi, Torrent downloader, and Pi Hole, all in one.

Since I’m already on 22.04 (Minimal), what will I need to do to re-enable Hardkernel’s repositories on my copy of 22.04?

Thanks!

If you already had this repo, you don't need that.

You're supposed to add that line inside /etc/apt/sources.list.d/odroid.*, an then run sudo apt-get update

Thanks for the clarification. I’m SSHing into the XU4 from a Mac using Terminal. What would be the easiest way to add the line?

Thanks!

Can you use "nano" or "vi" text editor on the SSH session?
If yes, just edit the files as mad_ady mentioned.

Nano did the trick. I had to remove where the line was #’d out, plus change focal to jammy.

I am getting this message. Do I need to do anything with this?

Code: Select all

http://deb.odroid.in/5422-s/dists/jammy/InRelease: Key is stored in legacy trusted.gpg keyring (/etc/apt/trusted.gpg), see the DEPRECATION section in apt-key(8) for details.
My guess is ignore it, but I can do something if I need to.

The ubuntu generic kernel is 5.15 and does ship exynos5422-odroidxu4.dtb, see here, however installing 5.15 generic or lpae does not boot the ubuntu image. With Debian Buster armmp kernel this was an option, if you replaced the init ramdrive with an uIntrd and used vmlinuz instead of the zImage.

Did somebody succesfully boot the generic image and knows about additional adjustments to the /media/boot folder?

You can check Armbian, which is providing tested and cleaned Debian or Ubuntu based builds.

I have a couple of MC1-solo units that I want to upgrade in place. I have downloaded the 22.04 image and put it on a new SD card an the board boots fine. My boards are all completely configured to my liking and I want to just upgrade to the later Ubuntu version. is there a way to upgrade in place from 20.04 to 22.04 on a MC1-solo board ?

Yes. It's best to do a full backup before, just in case. Then do sudo do-release-upgrade -d. For me it was fine. The only problem was that modules installed with pip3 weren't installed under the new python

Any clues on that? I'd like to test different kernels to see if they affect the performance.

Actually, I'm not sure the specific tunings provided by the 5.4.22 kernel by hardkernel.
