[Solved] XU4Q desktop hanging

Unread postby MimCom » Sat Jan 13, 2018 6:40 am

XU4Q running 4.14 kernel, very basic desktop doing web browsing (wife's machine). Default governor set to ondemand in boot.ini

Hangs occasionally (at least once every other day, sometimes twice a day) while reading basic web pages (no video, etc.) Shutting down or unplugging, waiting 2-3 minutes and restarting always fixes it.

Sample temps when I've been able to SSH in and grab them, just before restarting:

Code: Select all
20171105:
71000
73000
74000
71000
69000

20171114:
85000
84000
88000
87000
78000

20171115:
82000
82000
86000
84000
74000

20180112:
70000
70000
73000
72000
64000

Any suggestions?

thank you~

Light web browsing isn't really light on a SBC, it is actually quite heavy.

But the device shouldn't freeze up, could you check free memory and system log next time?

Will do, thanks.

Just hung a few minutes ago, with horizontal stripes across the screen. That happens every so often with these. Seems to be triggered if I put my hand on the heatsink to check temp.

Ran some iperf3 tests between it and a C2 this afternoon (900 + mbits TCP) which did not seem to affect it.

That sounds like the heatsink may be shorting against something.

The latest kernel should be 4.14.13. Please update it.

Can you run "htop" to see the CPU load?

It shouldn't lock up at those temperatures, but you would notice a decrease in performance due to throttling. You should look into an active cooler like a noctua PWM fan.

Is your board in a properly grounded case?
If not the touching the heatsink with bare hands and not in an ESD safe environment is a bad idea.

The lockup then happened from static discharge from your body and not because of the heat.

Happens to mine as well even if running rockstable on 50°C.
It freezes and sometimes reboot itself.

I did an update and a dist-upgrade yesterday, prior to that post.
Code: Select all
$ dpkg -l|grep linux-image
ii  linux-image-4.14.0-83                 20171123                                     armhf        Linux kernel binary image for version 4.14.0-83

ii  linux-image-xu3                       83-1                                         armhf        ODROID Kernel for 5422 based products.

I'm using unmodified repos from the 4.9 image I flashed the eMMC with. Any reason that build wouldn't be pulled?

Thanks, that does make sense -- we're in the mountains of New Mexico, land (at times) of 5-6% RH.

Anyone have a pointer to a metal (or metallized) case?

Did you update the system including "dist-upgrade"?
viewtopic.php?f=29&t=28895

BTW, was there no lockup if you don't touch your XU4?

Yes, as mentioned above
MimCom wrote:I did an update and a dist-upgrade yesterday

I ran another apt-get-update followed by an apt-get dist-upgrade this morning just to verify. No new linux-image resulted.

odroid wrote:was there no lockup if you don't touch your XU4?

The lockups were prior to (and are independent of) the ESD issue.

Wife reports a system hang followed by either

(a) she power-cycles the XU4
or
(b) I ssh in and record temps
or
(c) I walk in to verify temp on heatsink.

Only (c) results in stripes across monitor.

I have installed htop and will wait for the next hang to see what that shows.

After dist-upgrade, my current kernel version is
Code: Select all
odroid@odroid:~$ uname -a
Linux odroid 4.14.13-100 #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri Jan 12 19:09:58 UTC 2018 armv7l armv7l armv7l GNU/Linux

As far as I remember, early 4.14.0 version had a stability issue.
Please check your kernel version again.

Try "apt install linux-image-xu3" as explained in the link.
Code: Select all
sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade
sudo apt dist-upgrade
sudo apt install xserver-xorg-video-armsoc ffmpeg
sudo apt install linux-image-xu3
sync
sudo reboot
