KitKat 4.4.4 Pocket Rocket for ODROID-XU3/XU4 (20151130)

Unread post by robroy » Wed Dec 03, 2014 4:44 pm

I created an Android Kit Kat 4.4.4 image with a core suite of applications for a set-top box.

Download the image here:
http://oph.mdrjr.net/robroyhall/images/ ... 130.img.xz

Pocket Rocket 4.4 works with both Class 10+ micro SD card and eMMC. However, an eMMC module is highly recommended for best performance because of Android's heavy disk I/O. When writing to eMMC, use the eMMC->SD card adapter that came with your module and copy the image directly. It may be necessary to use the eMMC recovery tool before writing this image: http://forum.odroid.com/viewtopic.php?f=53&t=6173

Already have an Android image?
Upgrade your existing image to Pocket Rocket with the Epic Loot Software Collection, which includes Kodi 14 and more: http://forum.odroid.com/viewtopic.php?f=113&t=8787

Applications:
  • Chrome
    Firefox
Kodi 14 Helix with hardware acceleration
    Gmail
    Google Drive
    ES File Explorer
    Ultra Explorer
    Terminal Emulator
    MX Player
    tTorrent
BluezIME Controller with HID pack for use with Wiimote
Angry Birds Star Wars I and II
    Angry Birds Space
    RetroArch
    Ad Away
    Jota+ Text Editor
    Juice SSH
    bVNC
    Screen Orientation Control
    full!screen
    Youtube
    Netflix
    TED Talks
    Pandora
    PC Radio
    BusyBox
    ZArchiver
Customizations left for you upon burning the image to your card:
  • 1. Configure the following apps and enable them with SuperUser permissions: AdAway, full!screen, and Screen Orientation Control.
    2. Start MXPlayer, select "Settings", choose "Decoder", and click all of the "H/W+ decoder" checkboxes.
Optional steps: Features in this release:
  • Kodi 14 Helix with hardware acceleration
    Installable on 8GB eMMC
Notes:
  • KitKat 4.4.4 is still in Beta, and some features may not yet be working properly. Please provide feedback and bug reports directly to the Hardkernel developers on the main KitKat thread if you encounter any issues.

When resizing the partitions using Gparted on a 64GB eMMC module, the FAT32 partition has a limit of 32GB in order to be recognized by the bootloader. It's recommended to backup, delete, recreate and restore the files to the FAT32 partition instead of resizing it.

The folder "/sdcard/Bootstrap" contains the installation files for apps that were downloaded from the developers' websites. Please copy the Bootstrap directory to an external USB drive for system restore purposes as it contains everything you need to rebuild Pocket Rocket from the official HardKernel release.

If you experience poor playback in Kodi, use MX Player instead, which also has hardware acceleration.

You can provide feedback directly to the Kodi developers here: http://forum.xbmc.org/forumdisplay.php?fid=164.

Kodi nightly updates are available here: http://mirrors.xbmc.org/nightlies/android/arm/.

Hi Rob, i got your very fine Pocket Rocket II: Android KitKat 4.4.4 runin on my XU3, but i can´t get any connection to the Internet. I tried with a wired and wireless connection and using with or without static ip-address, can you help me what i´m doing wrong, please?

I prefer a wired connection. With other images like the gamestation turbo (Ubuntu) i got no problems or with Android´s versions before.
Is there any setting i forgot to check?
I´m using the Odroid wifi Module 4 (Ralink RT5572N) too.

Thanks for helping

I believe that the current Wifi 4 dongle driver doesn't yet support an encrypted connection. Try setting your wireless network to be open, just for testing purposes. Do you have another ODROID plugged into your network? The MAC addresses may be conflicting.

You can try using the ODROID Updater utility to bring in the latest kernel and system improvements. You may need to download the file using the SD card version that has Internet access, then copy the file to a USB drive.

Alternatively, you can upgrade your "good" version of Android to Pocket Rocket by using the Epic Loot Software Collection, linked in the original post, and install the rest of the apps from the Google Play Store.

Hi Rob,

I have just flashed this Image onto a SD-card for testing and booted the XU3, however I'm seeing the same issue as I2uSH.
I want to use wired eth, not wifi, however the board shows no connection when plugged in, there is no link or activity light on the port and changing anything in settings -> wireless & networks -> Ethernet has no effect.

Identical hardware setup (nothing but ethernet, HDMI and a keyboard) work fine with the current lUbuntu image.
Just wondering if you have seen the same issues, or have any suggestions?

Does this happen with the official Hardkernel Android image as well?

I just dropped the following image: android-4.4.2-alpha-sd_installer-odroidxu3-20140813.img onto the board; ethernet working fine
ran the Odroid updater app to the latest version, no other changes, ethernet no longer working.

Hello sir! Looks like Stickmount isn't installed on you image by default. But no worries it install just fine but isn't working in my case. I have a 4 TB SATA storage drive that I connect via USB3 Dock. I set it up when I was using Ubuntu so its formatted in EXT3. Any clue what else I can try?

Thanks!

Stickmount used to be needed until Hardkernel improved the external storage drivers. I removed it from the application list on the first post, thanks for letting me know.

Does the drive show up in ES File Explorer?

I downloaded this image and flashed on sd card to try it out, i loved it, so i flashed it to my android emmc. But i cant get emmc to update like i did with the sd version. When i click "get latest version" it says the file has been moved in parenthesis before the file name. I went back to the sd version and checked it, but it says same thing? in the updater

I think the update website was switched to https. You might need to download the latest update manually from dn.odroid.in.
