Turnkey Image for HC2?

Unread post by PeteCress » Wed Dec 11, 2019 6:45 am

This is from somebody who, if you took everything they know about Linux, rolled it into a ball, and set it on the edge of a razor blade, it would look like a golf ball in the middle of the New Jersey Turnpike.

So cut me a little slack if this seems overly-simplistic....

My use case is simply
  • Removing an HTFS-formatted/populated drive from my 24-7 PC
  • Putting it into an HC2 that will live in the LAN closet
  • Having that drive appear on my LAN as a share - the same way it does now while it is residing in that 24-7 PC
Logically, it seems like it should be possible to develop an image that I could burn to my HC2's System SD card that could get the HC2 up and running....period....no intervention required... and any drive I put in gets put out as a LAN share....
  • No separate distro install
  • No customization of said distro
  • No separate package installs to said distro
  • No system updates
  • No driver installs
  • No nothing - just etch that image on to the SD, insert the SD, boot the HC2, and go...
Is there any hope?

UUID of the hard drive's partition would seem to be one stumbling block...

I have no experience of using the HTFS and I've never seen who is using the HTFS format in this forum.
I hope other people can help you.

I'd suggest flashing OMV image. It has an intuitive web interface where you can set everything up.

Regarding a zero-click setup, it is technically possible (OMV is the closest thing to it), but typical users want to tweak their setups so bobody has bothered.

Make sure you use at least a 16G card and look for a geting started omv youtube video. No linux knowledge required.

Our OMV guide might be helpful too.

Here is the link, I would stick with this version and not update it at all unless you have an issue:

Just make sure to use "big_writes" if writing to the NTFS drive and of course use NTFS-3G and not the kernel method.
