xu4 not starting with emmc boot

Unread post by minca » Sat Oct 07, 2017 1:46 am

Hi,

the OS was running fine since 2015, but now was time for a update...

I've tryed to update my Ubuntu Os, but failed.

So my eMMc seams to be dead now.
When i try to boot from eMMC the Odroid won't even start (power up, cooler fan rotation), only the red light is up:

emmc:

sd (even with no OS on it):

emmc as sd:

I'm able to boot from SD card but not from the eMMc..

When I was flashing the Tool to the eMMc from my PC, the chip on the eMMc was pretty hot after a while...

Anyone had the same issue? any help ?

thx

The bootloader blobs in the hidden blocks in your eMMC is not compatible with the latest Ubuntu image.
Update/recover the hidden blocks with the following instruction and flash the latest Ubuntu image with Etcher.

I've tried this also but only to step 6. It's blue for cca 15 sec and after it goes off, only the red light is up. After that I've tried reboot only with emmc and with same result, can't power it on.

EDIT: so now I've tested my Odroid with 2nd eMMc from friend of my and it works.
Problem seams to be the eMMC card.

the android installation did not work the eMMc is empty

I've also tryed to restore my backup image usind "dd" command - it worked but the system won't start (can't power on)
But when I connect the eMMC in Reader to Linux Pc it shows me 2 partitions (boot, bootfs)

EDIT2: I've also tried the backup Tool: viewtopic.php?f=52&t=22930&start=50#p203775

any tips?

If the recovery process was not successful, your eMMC could be damaged electrically.
If you can't find any eMMC blocks when you boot from SD card, your eMMC could be dead.

In that case, the eMMC connector or related circuit on your XU4 could be damaged.
It is worth to clean the eMMC connector with alcohol and cotton swab.

i did and I'm able to boot from my 2nd Emmc card.. I got 2x XU4s and 2x emmcs 8gb..so the 2nd eMMC (with ubuntu 15) works on both XU4s

Hi all,
sorry to bump up an old thread but since I'm experiencing exactly the same problem I'd like to know if in the end it was solved or not.
Thank you.

if you read the thread ..a replacement was granted for the chip..
try the recovery process if that fails i suggest you start your own thread....also state what color backing your chip is ...

Hi and thanks for your answer.
I read the thread and knew a replacement was granted but then nothing has been said afterwards whether the replacement solved the problem or not, that's why I asked.
I have already tried the recovery process but it fails exactly the same way as minca.
The color backing my chip is green.
Thank you.

It's none of them, it's another 64GB eMMC I had lying around.
Are there incompatibility problems?

Try this recovery process first if your eMMC PCB is green.

Thank you for your suggestion.
Yes, the PCB is green, I have tried the recovery process but it doesn't seem to complete properly.
The blue led stays on for some 15 seconds and then suddenly turns off together with the fan, only the red led remains on but nothing else happens.
If I try to reboot no signs of activity show up.

Did it work?

I guess not based on your last post.

Unfortunately not, I am stuck at the failed recovery process.
The eMMC works, because if I format the "main" partition I can read/write on it.
It seems like I cannot access the two small boot partitions.
Is there a way to manually flash (i.e. using dd) the boot partition?

Thank you.

AFAIK, the cheap Foresee emmc chipset doesn't work with Exynos eMMC host controller.

Not all 64GB eMMC modules sold by Pine folks are FORESEE. They used some new Sandisk 64GB modules a while ago but had to stop this since the horribly outdated Allwinner BSP code wasn't ready for a newer MMC version and both u-boot and kernel needed patches to boot at all and enter higher speed modes.

@tango13: You could give a recent Armbian or OMV image a try, boot from SD card with the eMMC attached, then call 'sudo nand-sata-install' and choose menu option 5 ('update bootloader' or something like that). Then this 'foreign' eMMC might work with XU4 too. But if it's FORESEE it will be several times slower than the eMMC Hardkernel sells (especially wrt random IO).
