Most stable/reliable debian OS+kernel for headless operation HC1

Post by mcmanuf »

Hi,

I have not used my HC1 for a long time, and the last I remember, was I used armbian image (maybe debian 9?), with kernel 4.14. This seems to be superceeded by newer debian and kernel releases.

Alot has since happened, and would like to have the most recommended stable image and kernel to use as of july 2023.
Also it would be most optimal, if it was a OS+Kernel which receives stable updates via these switches, so I dont need to reformat SD card every now and then.

Code: Select all

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade
sudo apt dist-upgrade
sudo reboot
I have narrowed the searching for optimal CLI debian version to the following:

https://www.armbian.com/odroid-xu4/
Armbian Jammy Minimal CLI 5.4.y
Armbian Bookworm Minimal CLI 5.4.y

https://wiki.odroid.com/odroid-xu4/os_i ... l/20220721
Ubuntu Minimal 22.04 LTS (v3.1) 5.4.196

I am mainly going to run OpenMediaVault on it, so need optimal samba and NFS speed and stability.

Thank you.

I am running Armbian 23.02.2 Nightly with Ubuntu Mantic on my HC1, with bleeding edge Linux 6.1.11-odroidxu4.

Quite happy so far. I can recommend this, no problems after updates etc. New software with the latest features.

I just installed latest Ubuntu Armbian and then updated Jammy with

Code: Select all

sudo sed -i 's/jammy/mantic/g' /etc/apt/sources.list
. The armbian repo should also be updated to the latest existing one (lunar if i recall correctly).

I update with

Code: Select all

sudo bash -c 'apt update && apt full-upgrade && apt autoremove && apt clean'
.
