Wireless Access Point configuration on 18.04

Unread postby VTNewb » Thu Nov 08, 2018 3:45 am

Good afternoon folks,

I've got a WiFi Module 0 and I've attempted to use the following tutorials to create a wireless access point.
using wpa-supplication: https://wiki.odroid.com/accessory/conne ... plicant_ap
using hostapd: https://wiki.odroid.com/accessory/conne ... fi/wlan_ap

In both cases I successfully create a wireless access point, but any android device attempting to connect complains of not receiving an IP address. When my Windows 10 computer connects, It issues a very strange IP, not like the IPs set-up in the tutorial, and is unable to ping the odroid. If I set a static IP in windows to meet the defined range (e.g., 192.168.1.49), I'm still unable to ping the odroid.

Has anyone delt with this? Is this an issue with 18.04 specifically and the age of the tutorials?

Thanks for any help.

Did you configure the AP host daemon?

Hi odroid

yes I configured the AP host daemon. I actually had a friend attempt to do the same thing last night, and he was met with the same problem.

To be 100% clear - All I want is to get on the Odroid network via WiFi to grab a USB webcam stream hosted by mjpeg streamer, so forwarding to internet access is not a priority. Either way, all my devices are not assigned an IP address.

I tried WPA2 WPA1, and no security as well. Same issue. Is there any debug info I can provide to help? I'm not much of a networking expert but:

My network is on 10.1.10.xxx - my odroids (I have many! - love these things) have an address like 10.1.10.214. I ssh into them to start the stream. My goal is to then connect to the odroid via wifi on my smart device and use VLC for android to display the stream (to start).

Could you try this automated script:

https://github.com/oblique/create_ap

You either need to be on the same subnet or route the traffic. Easiest to be on the same subnet (10.1.10.xxx).

In Armbian, this also goes fully automatic: https://twitter.com/armbian/status/932672897163890688

How is this helpful? They aren't running Armbian.

They have a problem and this problem is solved by installing Armbian which have huge advantage in this area. Video shows this in a very short time.

This utility could be ported to any arm/arm64 (we don't compile for others) Debian/Ubuntu. Probably you only need to add our repository, since hostapd is a bit modified and comes from our repository.

That could be helpful. But you can see posting it works on Armbian when they are running Ubuntu doesn't help ;)

This worked perfectly - It might be worth adding to the official wiki!
