I have no idea since I don't use Firefox for a couple of years.
I hope other people will help you.

I think that link is mp3, I would bet that Firefox would only play ogg.
try installing a plugin (vlc/gstreamer/etc)

Vlc will not play, segmentation fault. But
I notice on other machines when playing this in xfce4-pulseaudio-plugin under playback firefox is playing via "ALSA plug-in [plugin-container]"

cvlc should work,
(the vlc gui requires gl4es or GLESv2-QT5)
but I was talking about a Firefox plugin because Firefox did not support mp3/h265 natively due to non-"open" formats.

Try just playing an mp3 in Firefox to make sure it's not some other issue.

Using File->Open File to load a mp3 file plays but no sound.

The difference is likely what @elatllat said. My Firefox will play Youtube because Youtube has Webm (vp9+vorbis) content. It will only play content outside of Youtube if the Cisco plugin is installed. Then it will play mp4 (h264+ac3) etc. Outside of Youtube, FF probably won't decode audio other than Vorbis unless you rig it up yourself with plugin. I don't think the Cisco plugin helps with audio-only streams either. The AV1 codec will fix all of this :-) Opus is awesome.

On a pc running Debian Stretch Firefox plays whatever I have tried. What make Odroid different?

MDN said
..support for MP3 ... on ... Linux ... relies on GStreamer codecs...

Code: Select all

apt search GStreamer mp3 2>/dev/null | grep mp3
gstreamer1.0-fluendo-mp3/xenial 0.10.32.debian-1 armhf
Fluendo mp3 decoder GStreamer 1.0 plugin

Code: Select all

apt show gstreamer1.0-fluendo-mp3 2>/dev/null | grep Description -A 99
Description: Fluendo mp3 decoder GStreamer 1.0 plugin
This GStreamer 1.0 plugin permits decoding of MPEG 1 audio layer III
streams. It is derived from the ISO MPEG dist10 reference package.
 .
This plugin differs from the GStreamer MAD plugin in that it doesn't
 depend on a GPL library.
freedesktop said mad is in the ugly package and

Code: Select all

apt search GStreamer ugly 2>/dev/null | grep ugly/
gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly/xenial-updates 1.8.3-1ubuntu0.1 armhf
so try

Code: Select all

apt install gstreamer1.0-fluendo-mp3 gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly
I tested on the N1 and the link in the OP produces sound.

On my pc's gstreamer1.0-fluendo-mp3 is not installed and gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly is. On odroid gstreamer1.0-fluendo-mp3 was not installed and gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly is. On odroid I installed gstreamer1.0-fluendo-mp3. Firefox still does not play mp3. Strange. gst123 on odroid plays mp3 just fine.
