You have to configure the boot.ini file to enable 800x480 mode and DVI output.
Read this guide very carefully.

BTW, which OS image do you use?

Connect the display to your PC HDMI port to narrow down the root causes.
Also you the latest Ubuntu image with proper display configuration via editing the boot.ini file.

A new boot update might overwrite your configuration.

<1> You have to uncomment(removing # the 800x480 line.
Code: Select all
#800x480 without monitor data using generic information (ODROID 7")
setenv videoconfig "drm_kms_helper.edid_firmware=edid/800x480.bin"

<2> You have to change the output mode to DVI from HDMI.
Code: Select all
# --- HDMI / DVI Mode Selection ---
# ------------------------------------------
# - HDMI Mode
# setenv vout "hdmi"
# - DVI Mode (disables sound over HDMI as per DVI compat)
setenv vout "dvi"

If you use a Windows PC, edit the boot.ini file with Notepad++ or EditPlus.
Other text editors might break the compatibility.

I modified the boot.ini as you directed. When I restart the OS, it also has some other errors. The error reporting displaying on my screen (800*480 5 inch ) likes the attachment .

Then I update the kernel (sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade) with original boot.ini through my computer monitor. When I executed the instruction (sudo apt-get dist-upgrade) after some time, the system suddenly crashed and the screen became black. I restart the system while they cannot work. At the same time, the blue LED solid glowing. Before I do these two instructions, the odroid is able to work with my own computer monitor (using original boot.ini).

So what should I do next? Retry flashing the boot media with the downloaded image? I want to know why the system crashed suddenly when I update the OS.

A few sudden power-off events could corrupt the root file system.
Did you meet the problem while upgrading after freshly flashing the latest 16.04 image?
Or upgrading on the old 15.04 image?

Did you flash "ubuntu-16.04-mate-odroid-xu3-20161011.img" on your SD card?

Don't try the old image.

Did you "VERIFY" the SD card?

Not really.
But some people reported the SD-Formatter 4.0 could fix the random issue on eMMC & SD cards.

Did you wait enough time(several minutes) to complete the root file system resizing process?
Please post your boot.ini file again.

Anyway, did you have any chance to connect your Vu5 to your PC?
It will greatly narrow down possible root causes.

I couldn't display the system in ODROID now.

Connect your eMMC module to your PC and you can find "boot.ini" file in the boot(VFAT) partition.

If you connect your Vu5 to your PC, it will be very helpful to know whether your Vu5 is defective or not.

My board is able to work and my monitor displays well now.
I connected the VU5 to my PC. It's not defective.

I edited the boot.ini like this while the vu5's screen was still white.

I tried to upgrade but the system corrupted again.
The scrren show many errors about"read only file system"
what's wrong with the upgrade and vu5?

I have a few questions on your system to find a root cause.

How did you connect your eMMC to XU4?

BTW, did you wait a few minutes to complete the root file system resizing process in the first boot after OS flashing?
It should reboot automatically after resizing.
If you interrupt the process, the eMMC/SD file system can be easily corrupted.

Your boot.ini looks fine.
How did you edit the boot.ini on?
Did you modify it with Notepad++ or EditPlus on your windows PC?

Does you big monitor support 800x480 resolution?

1. I'm very sure that the eMMC connect to XU4 properly. It's able to work with my monitor now. But it couldn't update or display with VU5.

2.I excuted the instruction "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade". The updated process last about 2 hours. And ended with these errors like figure1. I didn't interrupt the process.

3. I modified the boot.ini with Notepad++. My big monitor support 800x480 resolution.

4. After update failed, I excuted the instruction"dmesg" to got the keepalive message(figure2 and figure3).
What's wrong with the upgrade?

I think you had to follow this steps to update the system. http://odroid.com/dokuwiki/doku.php?id= ... st-upgrade
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo reboot

Also show me df -h output on the command line to check if your root file system resizing process was okay or not.

I updated follow these steps. I have completed the first three steps.

The board crashed again when I reboot. The blue LED became blind.
I waited for a long time about 20 minutes but it still had no response.

So I cut-off the power and restart the system. The figure is "df -h " output after reboot.

The partition looks okay.

What is your kernel version?
It should be "3.10.105-138" if the system update was fine.
Also show me "lsmod" output.

Now,we have these problems.
1. The board is able to work when connects to a big monitor through HDMI port directly. I need to connect it with another monitor which is VGA output.
I use a converter like figure1. It works well when connects to my PC HDMI port. And it could connect with ODROID successfully before I wrote the image.
But it could not work now. The converter has no problem.

2. The VU5 is ok when connects to my PC directly. It's still not work when connects to XU4.

3. The converter(conver VGA to HDMI) is OK. It could work with my PC.
The VU5 is OK. It could work with my PC.
The XU4 is OK. It could work with my big monitor (HDMI PORT)
When the XU4 connenects to VU5 or converter, everything is wrong.

4.figure2 is "lsmod" output. It's very urgent for us. Please answer as soon as possible.

Your kernel updated well.
If you update the system, the boot.ini also is changed.

Check the line number 84 and line number 104 in your boot.ini file carefully.
https://github.com/mdrjr/5422_bootini/b ... ot.ini#L84
https://github.com/mdrjr/5422_bootini/b ... t.ini#L104

HDMI-to-VGA adapter might not be compatible with some monitors or devices.

I check the boot.ini file very carefully. My big monitor supports 800*480 resolution so I could see that on-screen resolution had changed.

When I start the system , it always show these errors. But the board is still able to work.
May be these errors effect the XU5's display. I restart many times it always display errors in figure1(The board could work).
sometimes it show more errors like figurt2 and figure 3. The board couldn't work at this time.

Please see the attachments carefully. It's very important for us. Thank you !

your boot.ini file is ok and set correctly for your screen..

check your power supply does it measure 5 volts..your sd/emmc is crashing..seems like it was not flashed properly...there is either a power problem or the media is faulty...and or both...

if you can get another power supply and make shure it`s output is 5 to 5.3 volts..i`ve seen that fault and i often found it was one or the other or part thereof both

i`m leaning towards a power problem because when you have the touch screen connected it causes a voltage drop drawing power/current and the power supply cannot keep up..

The I2C errors could be removed if you configure the blacklist file.
http://odroid.com/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=en:xu4_tips

BTW, you boot.ini file was not fully updated.
Try to update the system again.
It must be exactly same as this. For example, there should be "1920x1200" which doesn't exist in your boot.ini.
https://github.com/mdrjr/5422_bootini/b ... ot.ini#L26

Another possible root cause is the HDMI cable.
Try other HDMI cables.
