Debian Jessie for ODROID-U2 (XBMC Inside)

Post by mdrjr »

This is debian Jessie.
Powered by the latest kernel 3.8 that supports a fully working XBMC.

Video playback is very smooth on debian unlikely Ubuntu.

Credentials are:

root/odroid
odroid/odroid

It will auto-start XBMC. If you leave XBMC there's a fully feature XFCE4 :)

For those that want to use this exclusively for XBMC, you can apt-get purge all of the GUI stuff - xfce, lightdm, etc.. and just let plain X.
Then you can use this script placed in /etc/init.d:

Code: Select all

#! /bin/sh

### BEGIN INIT INFO
# Provides:          xbmc
# Required-Start:    $all
# Required-Stop:     $all
# Default-Start:     2 3 4 5
# Default-Stop:      0 1 6
# Short-Description: starts instance of XBMC
# Description: starts instance of XBMC using start-stop-daemon and xinit
### END INIT INFO

############### EDIT ME ##################

# path to xinit exec
DAEMON=/usr/bin/xinit

# startup args
DAEMON_OPTS=" /usr/local/bin/xbmc --standalone -- :0"

# script name
NAME=xbmc

# app name
DESC=XBMC

# user
RUN_AS=root

# Path of the PID file
PID_FILE=/var/run/xbmc.pid

############### END EDIT ME ##################

test -x $DAEMON || exit 0

set -e

case "$1" in
  start)
        echo "Starting $DESC"
        while :; do start-stop-daemon --start -c $RUN_AS --pidfile $PID_FILE  --make-pidfile --exec $DAEMON -- $DAEMON_OPTS; done
        ;;
  stop)
        echo "Stopping $DESC"
        start-stop-daemon --stop --pidfile $PID_FILE
        ;;

  restart|force-reload)
        echo "Restarting $DESC"
        start-stop-daemon --stop --pidfile $PID_FILE
        sleep 5
        start-stop-daemon --start -c $RUN_AS --background --pidfile $PID_FILE  --make-pidfile --exec $DAEMON -- $DAEMON_OPTS
        ;;
  *)
        N=/etc/init.d/$NAME
        echo "Usage: $N {start|stop|restart|force-reload}" >&2
        exit 1
        ;;
esac

exit 0
This will boot straight into XBMC, and will restart it if there is a crash or if you exit.

This image does boot directly on XBMC, however it keeps XFCE running in case you want to leave XBMC and use a Linux Desktop

I can't get any HDMI output either... tried two different U2's, two HDMI > Micro HDMI cables, two eMMCs and two different TV's (one 1080p and one 720p).
Also tried the 720p50hz, 720p60hz boot.scr so far, but no luck.

I plugged in the LAN cable and booted and I can see in my DHCP leases that the U2 has fully booted - I can also SSH into it, just can't see anything on the TV :-/

Just downloading the Ubuntu 13.04 image to see what I get with that, as I've only been using Android on the U2 so far.

Guys,someone of you had problems by exiting in xbmc to desktop?it's the 3rd time it happens,and i never see the desktop yet..
I don't attach logs,because i read now there's problems and i'm downloading the fixed version (infact only at 3rd tentative it showed in tv,i had to remove cable from HDMI switch and connect directly on a free port of tv)
Probably the problem i'm speaking for is related to the problem of hdmi?if i push exit in xbmc,the windows crash and stand in the sub-windows (the one with "reboot""exit" shutdown" etc)

ok,installed the fixed image.I have lots of problems.
let me explain something;it's only the first time i install and use xbmc on linux on odroid.
I like it,but never had so much need of it,the last month used it sometimes on jellybean and worked great,but honestly i'm a person who don't play films,used it only for audio\pictures via samba shares.
Now to come to this distro with on top xbmc.
1-i can't exit from it.evrytime i push exit it stop in that situations,i have to reboot to use the board,tried suspend and other options,no way to see the debian xfce page.
2-decided to set up xbmc.it continuely start the screensaver every some minutes,but i am using and moving the mouse..because i'm doing things,downloading addons,etc.found the screensaver menu,deactivated it..but screensaver start anyway(the default ones aren't working,the 2 i downloaded yes if i test it with the proper menu.
3-when i reboot the board(because of #1 problem)it start another screensaver and i think it's not of xbmc..it change everytime,and no matter i move the mouse..i can't pull off it.a trick i found is connect another mouse..and move the first i used,then disconnect the mouse(the second one connected)
Probably this last point is adjustable by setting my combo keyboard\mouse in debian ssettings,the screensaver that always changes too..but i'm unable of go on settings,xmbc hangs when i want to exit.
ps..it's 2 times i re DD it...md5sum was fine

Now i'd want to know if someone else has that strange behaviours..i will install all for the 3rd time tomorrow,for now i haven't done any debug to it,collect any logs etc..first only wanted to know if what i saying is discovered by others users...or my U2 is more crazy than me!ahahah
thanks

I was eager to give this a go. So far so good. Here's a rundown on what I've done which others may find useful.

* Flashed image to my eMMC using Win32DiskImager
* Everything booted smoothly, but I had no working mouse/keyboard and screensaver came on quite quickly
* ssh from Putty on my Windows machine, no problems there
* Changed root passwords
* Removed the screensaver

Code: Select all

apt-get remove xscreensaver
* Installed usbutils and rebooted... this seemed to take care of my initial usb problems, although I doubt this would account for it.

Code: Select all

apt-get install usbutils
* Edited my /etc/fstab to auto mount my network NAS drive (where all my media is stored)
* Added my media in XBMC and tested some 720p mkv files... looks pretty smooth

First of all thank you for all the hard work you guys put into this.
This build looks really stable to me. Unfortunately 1080p video doesn't run smooth :-( I only get about 14-18fps.
Here is a cutted sample clip: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/61623618/avatar ... sample.mkv
All other features I tried worked flawlessly and really stable.

Let's all make sure to give the Odroid XBMC team some time to finish their champagne 8-)

Low FPS for 1080p is expected in this initial build. I have some setup tips from @memeka that I'm going to try this weekend and document the results for everyone.

The big reason for celebration is that this version works very well for 720p, which is a HUGE step forward from the software decoding we've all been using for months ;)

Here are some ways to document your playback issues:
  • 1. First, try playing the video file using Android XBMC 13 or Android MX Player. If neither of those can play the clip well, then it's unlikely that the Linux version will.
    2. Start xbmc from the Terminal window by typing "xbmc".
    3. Turn on Debugging mode, inside the System menu.
    4. After exiting xbmc, copy the Terminal output to a file called "cli.log" and post it on http://www.pastebin.com.
    5. Also post the files "~/xbmc_crash*" (where the * is the most recent crash log) and "~/.xbmc/temp/xbmc.log" on pastebin. Make sure to delete both files before starting each test.
The most informative log is "cli.log" which documents dropped frames and other useful information. The other logs show your resolution and decoder settings.

If, for some reason you can't exit xbmc, copy the files using another Linux host and a USB adapter.

I changed logging to push everything into xbmc.log in todays commit. =D
Next xbmc build will have everything logged into temp/xbmc.log with debug on. With debug off only successful start and critical errors.

I tried removing screensaver,setting keyboard\mouse and installing usb-utils like suggested.Finally i booted to lxde and changed what i need,now no more problems with mouse or screensavers,only the fact i can't exit from xbmc,i'll see if i discover a workaround.
I tried playing some 720p samples,they played smoothly and very good,now i haven't any 1080p with me but downloading now to see how they performs.
I never saw before how they play hd videos,i an't do comparations,but 720p was really watchable without graphical glitches,lags or any sort of problem. :)

This image seems to have 2.3 GB empty at the end of the partition, making what could be a 1.7GB partition into a 4GB partition, which made the dd take 20 minutes instead of 8. Shrink it if you can and if this is appropiate.

Edit: also i seem to be stuck on 1280x720

That's correct, resize to what you want.

Replace the /boot/boot.scr with one there that fit your needs.

Main feature of the image is XBMC. I've tested this particular XBMC that's why I'm posting results here, not in "XBMC for XUBUNTU" in "ODROID-U2 ‹ Android" forum.
XBMC is the same in X2 and U2 image and it uses the same hardware in both boards. All discussion is now in this thread, not in X2 thread. I didn't want to split discussion and continue it in two threads simultaneously. That's why I posted it here.

I'll move my post.

I seem to be dropping my wifi connection if I'm idle (~5 min) or if I try to connect to a samba share through XBMC. Mounting samba shares using mount works; and I was able to play an entire movie, but if there's no data for a couple of minutes, I get kicked out of the network. The network isn't the issue, it's working with other devices. I'm using WPA2 and RTL8192CU.

Also, I couldn't find where to switch the audio to HDMI; now I'm getting all the audio over the analog plug

Mdrjr good work :)
But there are a few small problems.
1. an error message appears only when you first start, "Zertificat"
2. The screen saver opens too fast
3. My keyboard does not working (Logitech K400r)
4. When you play the video processor is 50c warm, I think is ok.

Yeah I couldn't mount my SMB shares from inside XBMC, had to drop out and hard mount them and go to the folder. Wonder what's happening there.

I was wondering the same thing. Now that I've got things set up the way I like it, I don't want to have to reflash the image every time.

on the SMB issue.. I have no idea to be honest.. I've tested here and I could browser my huge home network (wife and my pc) even play a video from my PC.
I'm really sorry to not be able to help on that, but works for me and I have 0 knowledge on XBMC.
Maybe the logs say something...

On the image.. its a debian jessie (updated debian) and there's the XBMC update script that will always grab latest version from my builder.

The reason that I use the xbmc-update and kernel-update scripts to exactly do that.. Fix small issues. Issues that doesn't need a new image.. I can fix on the script.. If you look at the script it fix a few bugs on Ubuntu already.
That's also the reason that I always ask to you download a new version before running because I'll add updates and fixes on the script ;)

Does the Xbox360 pad work in this build or do I need to go work out how to fix it? It lit up but XBMC didn't respond to the dpad input to navigate the menus.
Hardware accelerated video (720p MKV) in 720p HDMI mode works... okay, the frame rate keeps fluctuating a few FPS each side of the videos' rated framerate so it slows and speeds up a little. I'll put some more testing into it first.

Could you give us some extra information? Such as, is VLC working OK? Is this 3D accelerated? Why is it working, did you manage to fix the 3.8 kernel ?
I've experienced an almost acceptable frame rate on a 1080p movie (~15-18 fps), with good sound and subtitles. 4 cores were on 30% (XBMC) and one on 60% (the extra 30% was from XORG)

XBMC is 3D and Hardware decoded. Its all hardware accelerated. Except some videos that it falls backs to ffmpeg. (hit O when playing a movie and see if the decoder is mfc-XXXX)
If its MFC-XXXX them its being hardware decoded.

If you check the kernel 3.8 thread and the XBMC thread you'll find plenty of stuff.
Right now, you can play 1080p but only if you are using 720p as screen resolution..
There's plenty of things to go thru yet.. Fell free to contribute.

Only one word : GREAT !

You guys did an awesome job, it works perfectly !
For some reasons, it doesn't react exactely as my PI does, doesn't ask me if I wanna scan the sources. I'll figure that out.
Now, it only misses support for HMDI-CEC to be just perfect... (Hey, you don't want a keybord sitting on the coffee table, right ?)

Thanks again for all the work you have done.

Fiouz

PS : I forgot to mention, I'm connected to my NAS using Zeroconf, SMB cause NFS was oddly unavailable... Works fine though...

I too am having issues browsing / connecting to SMB shares from within XBMC. Additionally, I have my shares exposed via FTP as well and I'm unable to connect to the FTP share from within XBMC (but works okay mounting it with curlftpfs). Unfortunately, curlftpfs is too slow to use for a media consumption device.

Error browsing FTP:

Code: Select all

21:02:26 T:2833912848 WARNING: FillBuffer: curl failed with code 28
21:02:26 T:2833912848 ERROR: CCurlFile::CReadState::Open, didn't get any data from stream.
21:02:26 T:3040907952   ERROR: GetDirectory - Error getting ftp://192.168.1.100:21/
21:02:26 T:3040907952   ERROR: CGUIDialogFileBrowser::GetDirectory(ftp://192.168.1.100:21/) failed
This clearly isn't correct since I can mount it fine and it works fine with my Android based U2.

-------

Edit:

I was able to get SMB working by logging in as root (referenced in earlier post). FTP still didn't work.

Hate posting two posts in a row, but this guy seemed different enough to warrant its own.

Some of my 720p videos work great and others work for about 5 seconds and stop (but audio continues for a bit). When this happens, log output (by running xbmc from terminal) looks like this (snippet):
