Did you run it in X11 terminal? or just console mode?
Can you try "es2gears" ?

I'm going to reinstall, to start from a known place...
is this the correct img?
http://odroid.in/ubuntu-u2-u3/xubuntu-1 ... 211.img.xz

ie why is this file in the same directory?
http://odroid.in/ubuntu-u2-u3/xubuntu-1 ... 209.img.xz
looks to be an x2 build in u2-u3 directory...

Apparently you running an x86/amd64 compatible PC not an ODROID.
You should check your GPU drivers, and probably ask your question in a general Ubuntu Forum, not one for ODROIDs.
Donate to support my work on the ODROID GameStation Turbo Image for U2/U3 XU3/XU4 X2 X C1 as well as many other releases.
Check out the Games and Emulators section to find some of my work or check the files in my repository to find the software i build for ODROIDs.
If you want to add my repository to your image read my HOWTO integrate my repo into your image.
