Auto power on with HDMI connection.

* This issue has been solved in PCB Rev 0.5!
You don't need to add the R-C anymore if your PCB is rev 0.5

Some TVs/monitors have higher leakage current on the HDMI port which blocks the auto-power on.
In this case, you need to press and hold the power button for 0.5~1 second.
We call it "manual reset".

But a few industrial applications need the auto power-on without manual reset.
Here is a solution with a minor hardware modification.
You need a soldering tool with 2 small components.

1. Components.
- 470Kohm resistor
- 2.2uF capacitor (6.3volt or higher). We tested the monolithic type capacitor.

2. Soldering.
There are 3 points of soldering on the bottom side.

There is 1 point of soldering on the top side.

That simple RC delay circuit could emulate the manual reset.

Hi Odroid!
I noticed my u3 without PSU connected but with hdmi inserted suffer from this,or at least partially.
It auto power on,but the red light is on and little dimmed with only hdmi cable. Can you be more precise about "few industrial applications who nees auto power-on without manual reset?

When I place the board in the wall or cabinet, it is very hard to press the power button.
If I plug the AC power supply into outlet, TV will turn on first. It may block the auto-power-on of ODROID.
It seems to be a good example. ;)

WiFi router, NAS, backup system. Whatever you turn your U3 into.

will future odriod's come with this fix already done? i would assume that it would models past the U3, possible U4. would the fix be as the same as in the main post but with SMD parts instead? Is there a way to solve the problem at the PMIC or at the HDMI connector side on the board?

I think it can be fixed with a blocking diode in the HDMI circuitry.
But it is not easy to estimate the schedule because of many stocks at this moment.
Sorry about that.

Would it possible to modify the HDMI cable with a diode?

I wouldn't do that. HDMI goes with some high frequencies.. you can easily cause an interference there

Hi,

I use a U3 with a TV, whenever the TV is on and U3 is not plugged in, the red led glows dim(i understand this is because of leakage current). Because U3 is not always used when TV is on, i have separate power switches but the HDMI is always plugged. Is it safe on prolonged usage ?

Is there a particular reason for the 470K, 2.2uF combination?

Would a 1M, 1uF combination work? I am guessing they form a RC timer.

The reason for my question is that 2.2uF monolithic capacitors are not easily obtained where I live.

1M + 1uF should work.

Sorry to revive a very old thread. I eventually sourced and installed the correct components.

Even then the combination of my TV, the U3 and USB hard drive doesn't boot reliably/correctly.

Limited testing does indicate that the TV and U3, without the USB hard drive, does boot correctly.

I am using the PSU supplied by hardkernel so it should have sufficient current capacity ...

The USB harddrive is 1TB Toshiba.
