Using as File Server

Unread post by jdhanley » Fri Jan 03, 2014 9:06 am

If I was to use this as a file server and converted my internal SATA hard drives from my current server to external USB drives, how much of a reduction in data transfer would I notice if plugged in to the USB ports?

Thanks!

a USB 2.0 port in real world usage will peak ~34Mbytes/s.
The lan port on U3 will peak 12.5Mbytes/s.

:)

I think that for small file server, storing things like movies and music it should work. However if you need better performance XU is more suitable, 2 USB 3.0 and more USB 2.0 ports.

i personally reccomend the xu for this purpose.at least the lite version.
Beginning with the fact,u3 costs half the price,on xu-lite you already have included in the price the 5v4A power supply, fan and case.I'm planning to use my xu-e this way soon,i think it's the best use of it.
Already doing with one of my u2,but lack of usb 3.0 begin to let me think about switching all to xu.Anyways is doable too with u2\u3 with good results.
2x Odroid-U2

Odroid-U3
Odroid-C1+
Odroid-XU4

Interesting. But if the bottleneck is the lan port at 12.5 Mbytes/s, and for a network file server a lot of data transfer takes place over the lan port, what advantage would USB 3.0 provide?

Thanks!

Use a USB 3.0 to Gigabit adapter?

mdrjr is right, and xu has a separate bus only for 3.0 pheriferials if i'm not wrong..it doesn't share the bandwidth with lan as in 4412 based board.correct me if i say a mistake mdrjr.

XU has 2 USB 3.0 buses and 3 USB 2.0 buses.. (1 is dedicated to the ethernet).

U2/U3 has only two USB 2.0 busses, 1 for ethernet and 1 for the 3 ports.
That way USB's and Ethernet doesn't share the same bandwidth :)

Would it be possible to use bcache for the emmc chip as cache and a hard drive on an usb 2.0 port? If you include it in the lubuntu images people could use it out of the box.

I would have to try it.. but I'm not sure if the write count on the eMMC is bigger like a SSD.

I don't have that information :(

Not sure if this wouldn't trash the eMMC..
