WiFi modules for ODROID-U3

Post by DmitriK »

Good day,

Could you please tell me if these WiFi modules are compatible with the ODROID-U3 board?
• WiFi Module 0: http://www.hardkernel.com/main/products ... 5431421052
• WiFi Module 4: http://www.hardkernel.com/main/products ... 1630348024

Do they support monitor mode?

Thanks.

U3 supported WiFi module 3 only.
But we didn't try the monitor mode.

Having revived my u3+ I am trying to add a usb wifi. It identifies as...

Code: Select all

[ 592.110882] usb 1-3.3: new high-speed USB device number 7 using exynos-ehci
[ 592.163681] usb 1-3.3: New USB device found, idVendor=0bda, idProduct=8178, bcdDevice= 2.00
[ 592.163710] usb 1-3.3: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
[ 592.163728] usb 1-3.3: Product: 802.11n WLAN Adapter
[ 592.163745] usb 1-3.3: Manufacturer: Realtek
[ 592.163762] usb 1-3.3: SerialNumber: 00e04c000001
I am running Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS / 5.4.20-stb-exy+

The original post was some time ago. Before I embark on an attempt to try to find drivers, is anyone able to confirm if I am likely to be able to use this wifi device please?

Kernel 5.4 is quite recent, so it should likely work. Plug the wifi in a modern linux on a PC and use lsmod to see what module it loads. Then see if this module needs to be compiled in your kernel, or if you get it from an external git repo.
Also check if it complains about missing firmware files in dmesg.

Thanks for that. Was able to see which modules my XU4 is using with the same wifi stick installed...

Code: Select all

rtl8xxxu 106496 0
rtl8192cu 86016 0
rtl_usb 20480 1 rtl8192cu
rtl8192c_common 49152 1 rtl8192cu
rtlwifi 86016 3 rtl_usb,rtl8192c_common,rtl8192cu
mac80211 704512 4 rtl_usb,rtlwifi,rtl8192cu,rtl8xxxu
Managing to find/install/setup is proving tricky as none of the instructions I have followed so far seem to be working :?

Look if it's included in the kernel:

Code: Select all

zcat /proc/config.gz | grep 8192
See if this helps: https://github.com/pvaret/rtl8192cu-fixes

But you'll need to get the kernel headers for your kernel (or kernel source).

That was helpful but I'm afraid I kept running in to problems perhaps down to the image I was using?? In the end I used a different image and then compiled latest stable kernel including Realtek wireless drivers at menuconfig. So seems to be working ok now with 5.13.5 :P
