Minimal Ubuntu Sever 14.04 LTS

Unread post by meveric » Wed Apr 23, 2014 6:14 am

Hello,

just in case you need a headless server image, i just created an image for Ubuntu Server 14.04 LTS the size compressed is about 185 MB in download.

Code: Select all

http://oph.mdrjr.net/meveric/images/Ubuntu-Server/Ubuntu-Server-14.04-armhf-U-1.0.1_20150329.img.xz
I made the partion just barely over 1GB so you should be able to flash the image really fast on an SD or eMMC (remember to enlarge the partition later).

I installed OpenSSH Server so you can ssh into your machine.
The Image uses about 60MB RAM after booting.

Any suggestions on how to improve the image are always welcome.

As mentioned by others, the U2 & U3 boards should possibly be merged, as more issues seem to be in common than not.

(Although there could be different sections where they differ, it would save time searching for information relevant to both.)

Hi,

I can't resize my root partition.

fdisk does not show up the available partitions, so I can't extend them (I have 8 GB eMMC but only see 1GB)

Can you please provide tutorial for how to do this? I want to perform the operation on the Odroid as i have not another linux computer available.

Do a forum search for "live resize". There is a guide in the How-To section of the forums.

The image right now is about 1.2GB and requires a 2GB SD card.. if you don't wanna put lots of data/programs on the system you can reduce the size of the partition even more so it fits on a 1 GB SD card, since the actual system requires less than 600 MB.

No worries. I'm buying 4GB cards instead of 8GB cards. Locally that's $3.99 per card vs. $7.49 per card. A 2GB card is like $3.49. :-/ not sure why I'd bother.

Well this is a minimal server image it's basicly completly blank nothing installed that is not needed for a server.
If you know how, you can install everything you want, afterall it's a regular linux distro, so it's up to you what you install or not.

I'd like to connect a usb microphone to my Odroid U2, however I cannot seem to load the snd, snd_pcm, snd_timer and snd_page_alloc kernel modules on this image.
I have installed alsa-base, but if I do:

Code: Select all

sudo modprobe snd
sudo modprobe snd_pcm
I do not get an error, so the modules are found, however the modules are not loaded as indicated by 'lsmod'. Do I need another package that might have been stripped out?

I think there should be the snd_usb_audio if your USB microphone is compatible with UAC(USB Audio Class).

i'm having similar issues with other Ubuntu based images, but in kernel these modules are actually enabled and also build-in as far as i have seen. It's still odd that they seem not to load correctly.
I'm gonna check if i find something in the kernel sources that is causing that issue.

Yes, I do need snd_usb_audio, and that module loads fine, however it is apparently not enough to let the mic show up in 'arecord -l'.

I also tested linaro images on the Odroid, and they have the same issues indeed. On standard x86 14.04 server edition it does work, on the Raspberry Pi as well. What could be so specific about the Odroid versions?

compared to x86 ubuntu:

Looks like it's a driver's issue.
When compiling ARM there is one bit high in the return value. Bit arithmetic should be carefully reviewed in the driver's sources.
It is known thing that something like a <<= b; instead of a = b << 1; compiling in x86 gives different result then in ARM. :(

We don't offer XBMC for non-X11 envs.

Most of the people wants XBMC for X11.

Hi,

First thanks for the excellent job with this image really appreciated. Now, I'm trying to compile a driver for a wireless usb but the build and source kernel directories are broken links pointing to:
"/lib/modules/3.8.13.18/build -> /home/odroid/sources/odroid-3.8.y"
"/lib/modules/3.8.13.18/source -> /home/odroid/sources/odroid-3.8.y"
Is it possible to get hold of the sources directory since I can't find the appropriate headers to install?

Thnaks

can you check /usr/src/ if the headers are already installed?
If not you can take these:
http://oph.mdrjr.net/meveric/kernel/U2/ ... _armhf.deb

the links should actually be removed since they are not used or fix them to point to the headers after you installed them :)

hello,
this seems to be a really nice image you provided, but maybe a bit much minimalist for me ^^
i try to replace my server, an atom laptop with a U3 that is more powerfull.

some feedback / issues i can encounter :
- the kernel-update and odroid-utility.sh seems to not work. (aka no reboot possible behind)
- resize.sh works well
- /lib/modules/3.8.13.18/build symlink is broken i replaced it by doing a new symlink pointing to /home/linaro

- the main issue :
when i try to install dvb drivers and after i corrected the build symlink, i get this :

Code: Select all

sounds a little bit odd, but i guess the best approch would be to recompile the kernel and include the drives that way.
Try following http://forum.odroid.com/viewtopic.php?f=52&t=81 this guide (exchange 3.0 with 3.8) the kernel should work just fine and you probably can fix the issues you encounter.

Looks like this is an issue with the driver installing on arm platform. Too many things are looked into wrong places, I fix one issue and new arises on the next run.

Hi Forum

Found a solution myself...

sudo update-initramfs -d -k 3.8.13.21 does the job.

Thank you for that minimal image !

One question: How do i (safely) update the Kernel ?

currently installed is this yours:

Package: linux-image-3.8.13.30
Source: linux-source-3.8.13.30
Version: 3.8.13.30-20150617-U
Architecture: armhf
Maintainer: Tobias Schaaf (meveric) <schlurf82@googlemail.com>

apt-get dist-upgrade gives me this one:

ii linux-image-3.8.13.30 3.8.13.30-20150301-U armhf Linux kernel binary image for version 3.8.13.30

from the http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports/ trusty-updates source

which is actually older right ?

-->
How do i update ?

via apt-get dist-upgrade or via a script ?

Thanks !!!

Kernel upgrades are done via apt-get update && apt-get upgrade && apt-get dist-upgrade.
No scripts are used for it. But there aren't too many upgrades of the Kernel. 3.8.13.30 is the last that came out. every update that comes now are just minor changes and bugfixes.
Updates come from http://oph.mdrjr.net/meveric/ at least when it comes to Kernel updates.

Hi,

I have Odroid-XU4.

Can this image run on it?

Or is there minimal/headless Ubuntu/Debian 15.04 available anywhere?

Cheers
