Ubuntu 13.04 XFCE for ODROID-U2 (with 3D)

Unread post by odroid » Fri May 03, 2013 7:31 pm

What's new !

* System
- Ubuntu 13.04 root file system (Original Canonical Build not Linaro)
- xorg version is changed to 1.13.3
- Xubunut/XFCE is the default desktop UI becase the latest Unity desktop is not working on ARM platform.

* Kernel features
- Based on Linux kernel 3.0.75
- New HDMI driver to support 24bit true color (24bpp)

- The latest Kernel source code can be found in this link. Tag name is 20130429.
https://github.com/hardkernel/linux/tree/odroid-3.0.y
Kernel Configuration file is "odroidu2_ubuntu_defconfig".

Here is the full SD & eMMC image for new installation.
http://dn.odroid.com/Ubuntu_U2/20130503

File name is
xubuntu-13.04-desktop-armhf_odroidu2_20130503.img.xz

Uncompress the downloaded file and flash the img file to SD or eMMC storage with dd command.
Refer this link for the flashing. http://forum.odroid.com/viewforum.php?f=52

How to install the Kernel image and packages to enable the Mali 3D accelerator.
Open a terminal and follow below steps.

Code: Select all

wget http://dn.odroid.com/Ubuntu_U2/20130503/update_for_mali/linux-3.0.75-odroidu2_20130503.tar.gz
tar xvfz linux-3.0.75-odroidu2_20130503.tar.gz
cd linux-3.0.75-odroidu2_20130503
sudo ./install.sh
If will ask a confirmation and type 'y' to continue.
Do not reboot and keep installing Mali drivers !!

The OpenGL-ES Mali400 3D drivers for X11 MUST be downloaded.
Follow this instruction to install X11 GPU driver. Order is important!

Code: Select all

wget http://dn.odroid.com/MALI400_R3P2/20130429-for-xorg-1.13.3/mali_packages.tar.gz
tar xvfz mali_packages.tar.gz
cd mali_packages
sudo dpkg -i mali400_2.1-13_armhf.deb
sudo dpkg -i mali400-dev_2.1-13_armhf.deb
sudo dpkg -i xf86-video-mali_1.0.1-7_armhf.deb
sudo rm -fr /usr/lib/arm-linux-gnueabihf/mesa-egl
sync
sudo reboot
Note that you will meet an End-User-License-Agreement process in the dpkg stage.
Read the document and select "Yes" to complete the installation. You need a keyboard.

Code: Select all

Configuration file `/etc/X11/xorg.conf'
==> File on system created by you or by a script.
==> File also in package provided by package maintainer.
What would you like to do about it ? Your options are:
    Y or I : install the package maintainer's version
    N or O : keep your currently-installed version
D : show the differences between the versions
Z : start a shell to examine the situation
The default action is to keep your current version.
*** xorg.conf (Y/I/N/O/D/Z) [default=N] ? Y
Installing new version of config file /etc/X11/xorg.conf ...

Optional !!
If you use the RT5370 based WiFi module, follow this process.

Code: Select all

sudo depmod -a
sudo reboot
You must unplug the module for the process. !

Known issues
- glmark2-es2 shows lower score. Newer X11 version makes system slow down probably.
- USB Webcam doesn't work after Mali driver installation.
Please help us to find the root causes.

Sudo complains unless you have a /etc/hosts file. You can fix it like this:

As root:
echo "127.0.0.1 $(hostname )" >> /etc/hosts

And you may want to change your default locale away from Korean

A torrent link right from the start would have really helped me out, all the mirrors are super slow (~10KB/sec) for me :( . I've tried this location for torrents:

http://declanmalone.com/torrents/dn.odr ... Ubuntu_U2/

but it hasn't been updated yet.

Thanks if anyone can help :D .

At first I saw sluggish behavior, but now it seems OK. I just added the /etc/hosts entry and removed the korean font from the calendar panel

my first impressions: chromium browser is very sluggish, above all scrolling down the page...actually I had an error 2 times at the end of the boot complaining of lxpanel not working, I do not remember right now exactly, I`ll write down next time.
Anyway 13.04 in my opinion is really pleasant, thanx to the odroid staff that is really working hard for us. Now I guess we could focus on improving xorg that is not at that high level this beautiful small odroid u2 machine would be capable of.

even if you do not have hosts file create it:
sudo vi /etc/hosts

then inside it paste:

127.0.0.1 odroid

thats it!

Not to complain, just to underline things for our brave odroid developers: after, say, half an hour of stand by, the monitor started to flick madly going green. When I interrupted the stand by hdmi became stable again....

So at the moment, I'm playing around with this. After a full night of not using the Odroid, it's still running fine. I'm running it with an LG IPS234. No flickering, very stable. No crashes of the OS in the whole time.
Bluetooth is kinda tricky, because after a failure, the menu will not open again. Also a Apple Bluetooth Keyboard will not connect, a Trackpad did this job very fine!

Chromium is kind of a Pain in the ass, because it's sometimes very slow and stuttering. No Youtube, no Google Music and things like that atm. When someone knows a programm for using Google Music on the Desktop, I would be very glad.
Firefox is not really better at the moment.

Libre Office, Abi Word and Google Drive works perfect on this machine. So for writing and browsing a little, it's perrrrfect. ;)

Edit: It seems too, like sometimes the Cores doesn't throttle down. One Core is at the moment at 100% for the full time, but nothing was running (I closed chromium). A Restart helps. Monitoring Failure or real problem?

Edit2: Managed to install JDK8. :) Owncloud runs very fine, Jdownloader works too!
Edit3: At the moment, I cannot run any Emulator on Xub13.04. Something didn't work!
Edit4: GLMark Score under Xubuntu, just for the info!
glmark2 Score: 19
Edit5
Here the glmark2 Score under Lubuntu
glmark2 Score: 40
Edit6:
Kubuntu glmark:
glmark2 Score: 56
Lubuntu works just fine, Kubuntu too. under Kubuntu I didn't have real Keyboard input, very irritating. Some programs work, some not. At all I must say, it's at the moment not that better than the 12.11 Release and I will try robroyhalls release, when the download is finished. The emus and stuff is more interesting at the moment. :)

Google Music is available for 12.10 here: http://www.liberiangeek.net/2012/12/ins ... l-quetzal/

Chromium has a "background apps" setting that keeps it running all the time, even when the window is not visible. Unselect the "Keep Chromium apps running after chromium closes" at the bottom of Advanced Settings. This may fix the 100% cpu idling issue.

I thought that OpenJDK8 is still in "Early Access" stage? (http://jdk8.java.net/fxarmpreview/) Would you please write a How-To for installing OpenJDK8? I will include it in the next Fully Loaded release if it's past the Beta.

Already done. :)

And it's not Open, it's the real JDK from Oracle! But it|s still a Open Preview, but runs fine for me. We tested it with Minecraft Server.

Option "UMP_CACHED" "true"

in xorg.conf

Got more than 130 fps and 60 fps in fullscreen mode (but still very smooth) on 720p in glmark2-es2

This "UMP_CACHED" seems to solve some problems. Odroid work much more fluently and boots also a little bit faster. :-O
I can now scroll in Chromium very soft and fast!

Also I can confirm the better results in glmark2! See screenshot! ;)

So the main problem is the mali driver at the moment. I tested the system without malidriver and it works fantastic.
After installation of Mali, the system is stuttering and slow. Is it only the UMP_Cached, or more problems behind this setting?

And what did this option in xorg.conf?
Option "DRI2_WAIT_VSYNC" "false"
For all that want to change UMP_Cached:

Code: Select all

sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf_backup
sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

KDE didn't work very good for me. The Windows always stuck anywhere and I can't reboot or change user within KDE. Gnome wouldn't start for me!

It was a surprise, that Unity 3D work after all, but very very slow! No Fun!

Now I must find out, how I can remove all this stuff :D

that Option "UMP_CACHED" "true" in xorg.conf seems to help a lot not only chromium speed but also my green flickering hdmi signal issue... since I added that line no video signal problems anymore!! So in case some of you had that issue too give it a try.

Re: Ubuntu 13.04 XFCE for ODROID-U2 (with 3D)

I'm trying to install a repository for node.js development, but am having a hell of a time getting the repositories contents to get processed by apt. No errors mind you, just no updated packages available. Are there any ninja-tricks applied to this Xubuntu install that would prevent me from using add-apt-repository, or having lines from my sources.list from getting parsed?

I should be seeing version 8+, but I'm still only seeing version 6 which is from Ubuntu's main servers.

Figured it out.

Aside from the obvious lack of an ARM release on the node repository (which I should have known better and checked before posting) that most folks are using, if you want to compile the latest version of node, you'll have to use "./configure --without-snapshot" or it will segfault when you try and run node.

So far so good otherwise. Hopefully that will help someone else.

What is the meaning of this? I tried to install Gnome 3.8 and this was the outcome:

Depends: evolution-data-server but it is not going to be installed
Recommends: gnome-contacts but it is not going to be installed
Recommends: gnome-control-center but it is not going to be installed
ubuntu-gnome-desktop : Depends: gnome-contacts but it is not going to be installed
Depends: gnome-control-center but it is not going to be installed
Depends: gnome-documents but it is not going to be installed
Depends: gnome-online-accounts but it is not going to be installed

Recommends: cheese but it is not going to be installed
Recommends: empathy but it is not going to be installed
Recommends: evolution but it is not going to be installed

Is there some rule, that this packages are not installable or is this another reason? :)

The screen resolution seems to be set to 1080p by default, could you make it work like on Linaro 12.11 - it was 720p after install ? Also display turns off after I've installed the Mali packages. I'm running on a Lapdock.

There should be a boot.scr for 720p resolution in the FAT partition.

Bittorrent

Unread post by ezgoing » Sat May 18, 2013 9:12 am

Hello everybody
I have a problem with downloading bittorrent files, when I start the download speed goes to the max - 5-6 MB/s, then it starts going down up to 2 MB/s and keeps jumping between 0 amd 2.5 MB/s
My connection speed is 50 mbit/s, connected thru LAN, I use eMMC module bought from odroid, it looks like the problem is in the disk or disk drivers, i tried diffirent bittorent cliens and tried to change disk cache in torrent settings without a luck
Please help me find what can be causing the problem

Hi ezgoing,

That's kinda the way that flash drives behave on Torrent :(

So you're saying that this is software issue, not hardware?
Can somebody report their speeds?

No, he's saying that because of the way that torrent downloads function, flash memory has real problems saving it. Flash memory can only save data in chunks (generally 4KB on solid state drives, and I think it's the same for flash memory... or maybe 512byte chunks?). If you are downloading a torrent, then you are trying to save to random locations and you may not be filling up the blocks, which means that the block is either cache in memory until it is filled, or it gets saved with a bunch of following zeros to fill it up. When that block finally gets the rest of the memory for that torrent chunk, the U2 has to read in that partially-saved block, erase it, and re-save it with the full chunk of data.

This gives you strange torrent performance, because you are saving, reading, erasing, and re-saving some of the data, and on top of that, you are also caching a lot of data in RAM to prevent this shuffling of reads, writes, and erasures.

It's possible that I'm wrong, but I know I would try to avoid running a torrent program with a solid-state drive as the datastore. I can only guess that flash memory functions similarly. If I were you, I would grab a cheap laptop SATA drive and hook it up using a USB to SATA adapter for use as storage for your torrent client.

Hello
Here is the same thing as I wrote in suse-thread.
If an external hard drive connected via usb it does not boot.
Only when the hard drive removed it works.

Sounds like gstreamer issue? Any ideas?
Gstreamer doesn't support the NEON or SIMD instructions that can be used to enable smoother media playback on newer ARM processors. The official Hardkernel Ubuntu images are set up to use ffmpeg instead of gstreamer. Also, ffmpeg can be recompiled with SIMD, NEON, and SMP support to greatly enhance media decode and playback (and encode if you plan on doing any video capture or transcoding). There are several threads that detail how to work with ffmpeg and how to recompile it to get the utmost performance out of the ODROID boards.

You should use a media player that utilizes ffmpeg rather than gstreamer, such as Xine.
