Hi zalaare,

I've used your bin file to copy the image to my eMMC via the eMMC Reader. But on both devices XU3 and U3 the image isn't booting. I'ven't use the UART yet to see what's wrong.
I used this commands ./OpenELEC-Odroid-4.2.1.0.bin XU3 /dev/sdb and ./OpenELEC-Odroid-4.2.1.0.bin U3 /dev/sdb to extract the image to the eMMC.
I didn't see any error messages in the terminal window.

Do you've any ideas what's wrong?

Best regards

On the eMMC itself I can find 2 partitions.

1. 256MB FAT32
2. 40MB EXT4
3. the rest is unallocated

Here is the UART output from the U3

eMMC cards generally don't work. In your case its obvious that the u-boot never got fused properly. AFAIK eMMC has the u-boot in a protected area which explains the issue. All my work assumes you are installing on an SD Card. This all has been covered in this thread already, but for future Questions regarding eMMC, I've added another Note to the 1st post regarding this.

If your willing to deal with issues regarding this all, then I can advise you to copy the BOOT.SCR file inside the XU3 directory (assuming your on an XU3), to the root of that same partition. Your original u-boot should then find and run it at boot.

The previous version 4.1.6.0 working like a charm from my eMMC card on my U3. I wrote the image file with the Win32DiskImager to the eMMC card.

Now I copied the boot.scr and kernel image from U3 folder to the root directory but Openelec is hanging on the splash screen.

Here the serial output from my U3

hmmm, this looks good. Try ssh'ing into the device and then:
Code: Select all
systemctl stop xbmc
systemctl start xbmc

also
U-Boot 2012.07-gb255446-dirty (Aug 19 2014 - 21:19:09) for Exynos5422

tells me this is not fused correctly. You may want to simply do an upgrade on itself.
    Download the 4.2.1.0.tar upgrade
    put it in the /storage/.update directory (either sftp, or smb)
    reboot
This should reinstall u-boot for you. (in theory). Again all this has been tested on SD only by me.

Good Luck!

The upgrade of the u-boot fixed the issue. Now the device is booting into XBMC. I didn't find the HDMI CEC settings in XBMC. Is this not supported with the XU3?
Full HD videos are working so far and Live TV with Tvheadend is crashing on some channels. I will take a look into the crash log.

Under the XU3 the Input Devices are gray out and under the U3 the CEC isn't working. I've tried to set the HDMI Port and changed the HDMI Port but this doesn't help. Is there a trick to configure it under the U3. I have a Samsung TV and Anynet+ is activated.

Thanks!

I checked in meantime the serial output of the XU3. The u-boot version is still the same than before. So I don't know what the upgrade of the 4.2.1.0.tar changed, but it helps.

Extract: Extracting Odroid Image
Fuse: Fusing Odroid for XU3
Dann stecke ich die SD Karte rein, der Lüfter rast und mehr nicht. Kannst du mir ein Tipp geben.

@Hominidae : I've switched my MAC addresses to match those of the official ubuntu releases from hardkernel. This doesn't negatively affect me, so it was trivial to do. This should make easier in upcoming versions for you or anyone else who switches between images. This will only be effective in later builds, not the current one.

Hallo Jonny57,

http://archlinuxarm.org/platforms/armv7 ... odroid-xu3

Using a XU3 I can't change the volume in XBMC. The OSD shows that the volume should be changing, only muting works. I tried with both HDMI and the analogue audio port. Enabling and disabling pass-though, tried both auto devices in the XBMC settings. I don't use an amp.

Hej zalaare,
at first: very good work!
did you try passthrough sourround sound? i have the hardkernel suggested USB sound card with 5.1 support (CM108) http://www.hardkernel.com/main/products/prdt_info.php?g_code=G140081048224.
But i just get stereo in openelec. Do you or anyone else know how to get this work? in ubuntu or arch it's still working, so i think i need some kernel modules? or just some pulseaudio configuration?
Thank you very much!

Im also interested in the hardkernel USB sound card as well. Any luck with getting this working?

Really impressed with the image so far. Just having issues with the new .bin method. The old image files worked flawlessly on my sdcard, but the new method doesn't boot for me on odroid u3 with the latest 4.2.1.1.bin file.

Once its run I have a two folders on the sdcard called U2 and XU3. Im assuming these are kernels for the relevent odroid device. Do they need copying to the root of the sdcard? or do they stay where they are?

thanks, and keep up the great work!

I had the same problem, for my u3 i've just copied all files from u2 into root and it worked.

I don't have a usb sound card as you have to test with. I'm guessing that kernel modules are not the issue as I don't see any special downloads for extra kernels from Hardkernel. More than likely what we need is the command line equivalent to

Just playing around with pacmd
Code: Select all
pacmd set-card-profile 0 off
pacmd set-card-profile $CM108_card_index $profile_name

Not sure about setting the sinks up, w/o the actual card its just a guessing game. Anyway if you can find the right pacmd switches to make it work, just add them to a conf file in ~/.config/profile.d/ folder.

They stay where they are. The image holds both kernels. The only thing different between the XU3 and the U3 is the U-Boot fused to the boot device. If the U2/3 U-Boot is fused, then it will look to boot from the U2/BOOT.SCR script and the XU3 U-Boot will XU3/BOOT.SCR. Each of these scripts load the needed KERNEL for the device it was booted on.

Have you hooked up the USB console and looked at the U-Boot messages on your U3?

My server was obviously offline during your compile. This happens sometimes as I need my bandwidth for other things when I am home. Try again (Usually anytime between 03:00 and 16:00 EST) will be okay.

Universal image means that it is the same image for U2, the U3, and the XU3

LOL. Your timing couldn't be worse. I have my server down doing a RAID resync ATM.

Edit the projects/Odroid/options file and make sure that you use the following mirror:

# Distribution Specific source location : Additional
ODROID_MIRROR="http://freeweb.mine.nu/zalaare"

That should alleviate any further headaches with my server schedule :)

Hey,

I tried to put the new Version 4.2.1.1 on my SD Card. I formatted it and removed all previous partitions for a clean new install. Then I used the following line:

sudo sh OpenELEC-Odroid-4.2.1.1.bin U3 /dev/sdb1 (with sdb1 being the sd card). The terminal said "Extracting Odroid" and "Fusing U3". After that was finished my System could not detect the SD card anymore. The same goes for the Odroid itself. After I put it into the Odroid nothing happened at all. Gparted does recognize the sdcard but does not find any partitions.

What did I do wrong?

Hi Svenji,

I think your command should be sudo sh OpenELEC-Odroid-4.2.1.1.bin U3 /dev/sdb (Note this does not include the partition).

Also are you sure sdb is your mmc? normally this would be /dev/mmcblk0

Hey ReaperZN,

thanks for the advice, it worked really well :) I now have two partitions. After putting it into the odroid I also got a Heartbeat (finally!).

For now I don't have any HDMI output but I will have to collect further information on why this is the case.

Regarding the /dev/mmcbkl0 /dev/sdb issue, I think the built in sd card reader on my notebook is connected to the mainboard via usb and thus is shown as /dev/sdb

EDIT: The Odroid does connect to the network and is shown as OpenElec. When I try to ssh I only get asked for password (I remember that it asked for login and password a few weeks ago) and openelec does not seem to work as the default password.

EDIT2: I was able to ssh and also did a partition resize like it is told in the first post of this thread. Rebooted and I am now still waiting for picture to appear on my TV. It seems that the Odroid is indeed running but I have zero output.

EDIT3: Okay I did it. Reason for missing output is a) My HDMI cable is defect or b) the mini-hdmi output on my U3 is defect / loose connected. I get alot of disconnects and cannot play a movie because it always disconnects. Really sad :(

Great work Zalaare!

I compiled from source and produced an image file according to your instructions on the initial post. Everything went smoothly. FYI, the checksum on the image I produced is different from the image you provide for download, so something has evolved since your build. Initial testing of all media playback looks good! One thing that I'm looking into is enabling LiveTV using the pvr.mythtv.cmyth plugin. Right now, enabling the plugin results in crashing XBMC when EPG information is being fetched. I also see that it fetches "next recording" information and displays it, so it's "working" but segfaulting somewhere. I'll see if the debug logs reveal anthing and report back.

Hi,

I am really grateful for your great work on this image. However I see this same question asked several times in this thread and no final answer about it: why the volume slider is not working? I just installed 4.2.1.1 in my U3, and out of the box the volume is not working. The 2 options I have in the Audio Output settings are the following:
Default, Default Output Device (PULSEAUDIO)
Built-in Audio Analog Stereo, Speakers (PULSEAUDIO)

Selecting both settings have the same result: audio comes out only from HDMI, not from on board audio plug. And in both cases the volume slider shows in the screen as it's changing, but sound volume is always the same. Moving the slider to zero volume is muting the sound. I don't have any external card so I don't have the option to enable or disable passthrough.

I will appreciate your help with this issue, it seems to be present for several users. Thanks!

Hi Guys,

Has anyone got this build working with a shared xbmc library? I am using the mysql way of sharing the DB (See http://kodi.wiki/view/MySQL) and this seems to work from the 2 PCs however for some reason this is not working from the openelec image. I am using the OpenELEC 4.2.1.1 image on an XU3. To add to the problem, I am having to use the wireless to connect to the network. I have set this to autoconnect however I think this may be an issue that xbmc is loading before the network connection is started. Has anyone got this working or have any suggestions?

Thanks

Since you admit your knowledge of linux is limited, are you sure you want to install an *experimental* port of OpenElec? Many things aren't working right now...

Anyway... here's a step by step guide to installing the image using the "bin" file:

    1) insert your sdcard into the USB adapter

    2) insert the USB adapter into a USB port; most flavors of linux will now automount the sdcard

    3) open a terminal and type
    Code: Select all
    lsblk
    to see what device the sdcard has been mounted on. It should be obvious and it's probably the last entry. For this example let's assume it's mounted on /dev/sdb1 so the device is /dev/sdb

    4) in the terminal go to the directory you've downloaded the image to by typing
    Code: Select all
    cd <insert destination directory here>

    5) type the following:
    Code: Select all
    sudo ./OpenELEC 4.2.1.1.bin U2 /dev/sdb
    making sure you replace /dev/sdb with the device discovered in #3

    6) at the password prompt type your password
You should now see your USB activity light blinking and the following text:
Extract: Extracting Odroid Image
Fuse: Fusing Odroid for U2

That's it. Hope this helped. Good Luck!

Hey bighampton,

Can you confirm if the U2 parameter for the bin file builds the image correctly for the U3?

Thanks

U2 and U3 are 100% software compatible just some physical elements have been exchanged (number of USB ports, SPi and I/O Slot) rest is the same.

Gobam wrote:Hi,

Thanks!

By the way, I installed the latest Ubuntu image (Lubuntu), which includes XBMC,and in this image the volume slider is working fine. So this issue is something related specifically to OpenELEC.

Thanks

There is an option under the OpenELEC settings inside XBMC where you can set "Wait for network" and a timeout period. If you enable this and set it to something rather high (I used 30 seconds on my wireless setup), then OpenELEC won't start XBMC until its either A. Connected to the network, or B. 30 seconds have passed during boot and the network never came up. You may have to experiment a bit with the seconds to get it to work reliably.

Best of luck.

Zalaare,

You are a legend among men. This is a brilliant image and you have helped a ton. I now have this fully working on my XU3 with a shared XBMC DB.

Task 1 completed (Get the XU3 working)
Task 2 completed (Get the shared DB set up and working)
Now for task 3... replicate the setup for my U3.

Thanks so much for this awesome image and the continued assistance you have provided in this thread.

Cheers

Hello,

I just updated my U3 from version 4.1.6.0 to 4.2.1.1. Suddenly the system crashes as soon as I enter my wlan passphrase. I have a TP-LINK 722n USB Wlan Stick. I worked without problems in the old version.

It seems as if there was a problem with Atheros HTC based WLAN sticks: http://www.openelec.tv/news/22-releases/140-openelec-4-2-1-released But that should be fixed with version 4.2.1. So what else could be the problem?

Thanks and greetings from vienna.

hello,

my problem with the openelec image is, that when i make a poweroff with SSH or when the system crashes , i cant boot the XU3 anymore.

the blue led is flickering one or two times and then the XU3 has a solid green led, not possible to ssh into the XU3.

i did until yesterday several times a new installation and then the XU3 was ok again, but of course if all the configuration
are made, its a bit hard to begin all over again. ;)

( Sd-Card , XU3, openelec 4.2.1.1 )

maybe someone have a Solution for this issue ?

thanks

Fredi

Hey,

I'm having some difficulties getting CEC to work on my Odroid U3 (with OpenELEC 4.2.1.1) and Samsung UE19D4000.
The Odroid is connected to the Samsung's HDMI 1 port and I have currently the following configuration to match this:

Code: Select all
ODROID:~ # cat $HOME/.config/profile.d/cec.conf
CEC_HDMI_PORT=1
ODROID:~ # ls .xbmc/userdata/peripheral_data/
cec_0000_0000.xml
ODROID:~ # cat .xbmc/userdata/peripheral_data/cec_0000_0000.xml
<settings>
    <setting id="activate_source" value="0" />
    <setting id="cec_hdmi_port" value="1" />
    <setting id="cec_standby_screensaver" value="0" />
    <setting id="cec_wake_screensaver" value="0" />
    <setting id="connected_device" value="36037" />
    <setting id="device_name" value="XBMC" />
    <setting id="device_type" value="1" />
    <setting id="double_tap_timeout_ms" value="2000" />
    <setting id="enabled" value="1" />
    <setting id="pause_playback_on_deactivate" value="1" />
    <setting id="physical_address" value="1" />
    <setting id="port" value="/dev/CEC" />
    <setting id="send_inactive_source" value="0" />
    <setting id="standby_devices" value="231" />
    <setting id="standby_devices_advanced" value="" />
    <setting id="standby_pc_on_tv_standby" value="36028" />
    <setting id="standby_tv_on_pc_standby" value="0" />
    <setting id="tv_vendor" value="0" />
    <setting id="use_tv_menu_language" value="0" />
    <setting id="wake_devices" value="231" />
    <setting id="wake_devices_advanced" value="" />
</settings>

On my TV the Odroid cannot found as CEC-device. Can someone point me to something I could try?

Advancedsettings / cachemembuffersize – ignored ?

Unread postby wydziub » Sun Dec 28, 2014 1:13 am

Normally on Odroid U2, I have almost 90% of free RAM in OpenElec.
I wanted to use this RAM for network cache, to solve some random buffering issues.

No matter what value of cachemembuffersize (different than 0) I set in /storage/.xbmc/userdata/advancedsettings.xml, the amount of free memory is durig playback of IPTV or movies via SMB is always the same, and I see aprox. 10%-13% of RAM used.

Here is my advancedsettings.xml:
Code: Select all
<advancedsettings>
   <network>
      <buffermode>0</buffermode>
      <cachemembuffersize>104857600</cachemembuffersize>
   </network>
   <pvr>
   <minvideocachelevel>90</minvideocachelevel>
   <cacheindvdplayer>true</cacheindvdplayer>
   </pvr>
</advancedsettings>

Example above is 100MB of cache, I also tried 200MB, 400MB. XMBC would need 3 times more RAM than set value (400MB => 1200 MB), but free RAM is always about 1800MB (used 10%).
Also, even for 400MB, buffer fills very fast - to fast, as fast as for default 20MB value.

I tried buffermode=1, - no luck. :(
In xbmc.log I see, that my special://profile/advancedsettings.xml settings are loaded ok.

Config = Odroid:U2, OpenElec: Zalaare 4.2.1.2 (I think 4.1.6.0 had same issue).
I searched openelect.tv forum and it seems that normally this parameter works fine.
Can any verify this problem, please? :?: Is it only my case or it is global ?

Update:
I also found out, that is no mention of set value for cacheMemBufferSize in xbmc.log file.
On the internet I found logs with the line:
“0:00:21 T:3059793920 NOTICE: cacheMemBufferSize: 20MB “
I'm missing such NOTICE in my my log. Here it is: http://pastebin.com/QTW9CK8S

Update 2 (Final):
I was in error.
cachemembuffersize works for SMB and video streaming.
I can see it under osd status ('o' – key). However it is not working as described here:
http://kodi.wiki/view/HOW-TO:Modify_the_video_cache

When I set cache to 400MB, Xbmc tries to keep it at 200MB (it goes from 0 => 220 => 200 and keep at that level). Also it utilizes only 200MB of RAM, not 600 like described in the wiki :)
(when 200MB is set, it keeps cache at 100MB, and so on...)

The problem is, cachemembuffer size does not work when using PVR Simple IPTV addon.
Cache is constant at 0B then, and some other buffer is used (even with buffermode=1) :(

However, this is issue has nothing to do with Zalaare's OpenELEC build, it is more likely XBMC/PVR Simple IPTV thing. So I would say that the topic is solved here :)
