OFFICIAL Fedora 20 Remix

Unread postby mdrjr » Fri Jan 31, 2014 10:59 pm

Here it goes. The Fedora 20 Remix for U2/U3.

It's a stock, nearly unmodified image of Fedora 20.

Compatible with the kernel-update:
Code: Select all
wget builder.mdrjr.net/tools/kernel-update.sh
chmod +x kernel-update.sh
sudo ./kernel-update.sh

Install Mali
Code: Select all
wget http://builder.mdrjr.net/tools/mali_install_f20.sh
chmod +x mali_install_f20.sh
sudo ./mali_install_f20.sh

Wow, that is great - Thank you very much. I am just typing with that image :)

One BIG Problem> resize.sh is not working and there is not enough space to run an update with yum or install other packages (only 31 MB left)

resize.sh can work on Fedora if you do a minor modification to it.

I've attached the file modified to work on Fedora 20

When gnome 3 came about a lot of people, including Linus jumped ship to xfce. Many are unaware of the existence of mate desktop which is an improved gnome 2. Check to see if you can install it with yum. If not you may have to compile every parts. Source code is available for mate on Fedora. I have done that before and it worked nicely. Personally I do not use fedora much anymore because I do not want anything to do with selinux.

Theres no default password. You have to go thru the fedora initial setup

Does this apply to my case-scenario:

To log in to the root account without completing the initial-setup you will need to minimally edit '/etc/passwd' file and remove the 'x' from the line beginning with 'root' (this will allow you to log into the root account without entering a password).

I think there are some problems with the kernel update script, I tried to use it 2 times and had to reflash
after the update the fat partition gets completely wyped (so no boot.scr) and it doesn't boot
but also copying the boot.scr from another sd won't work so the installation after the update is broken and had to reflash

there is also another issue: with "yum update" after the restart internet (both wifi and ethernet) won't work anymore, it says connected but no way to successfully ping the lan, the router or anything else, no packets passage!

Yes, one must do some workarounds.
It is worth of reading what has been written about U2 & fedora
viewtopic.php?f=9&t=3526
why not the fedora 20 Remix posts for XU, and X2, too.

Please, don't blame me, if the following is inaccurate or odd, I just write this and don't make an exact test:
I was first making a backup of /boot and /media/boot directories prior running kernel update, with that data I was able to make a recovery.
For me, it seems that only zImage is used at boot time. Just by studying with 'strings boot.scr' file.
Then the the content of /boot/uboot is usesd. Currently the /boot/media directory is empty.
One can copy /tmp/Kupdate-LATEST/boot/zImage into /boot/uboot/. And the *.scr files can be copied from the x2u2 directory.

Thanks mdrjr for this distribution, really I think it's best linux distribution for odroid U3 as a desktop machine with a good repository for ARM. :)

I face some problems when I want to update my kernel via your script.
USB storage not working when plug usb flash or external hard drive, I think it's kernel modules issue.
even I flash fresh os into emmc , but usb still not working as storage device

Today i've updated, with kernel-update.sh, my FC20 previously at Kernel 3.8.13.21.

After update the kernel version is 3.8.13.23, but i've always a boot error:
"unable to mount /boot/uboot/"

i've a boot.scr modified to boot from /dev/sda1,
i've rebuilded my boot.scr, but the only solution was to restore the kernel 3.8.13.21 from the auto-backup.
There is something new in 3.8.13.23 that make fedora unable to boot? (i've also tried to boot from SD, but with no luck)

The kernel update does overwrite the boot.scr's.

You can download the kernel package and install it manually.. just look on what the update script does..

Its just putting stuff on its places and recreating the uinitrd

G'day,

Great remix. I have only recently got some U3's to replace the pi, as it does not have enough Horsepower for my requirements.

I have done the kernel update to 3.8.13.21 Not a problem.

I am however having trouble locating kernel sources. These are not needed to rebuild a kernel, they are needed by some software I am trying to compile for Amateur Radio.. After spending hours on google, I have come up trumps.

Any suggestions where I can get the source from?

I did get it from http://builder.mdrjr.net/kernel-3.8/2014.04.21-05.33/ however the Makefile in the usr/src/......arch/arm/is missing

Thanks.

Hi,

Yesterday I've updated the kernel-update script on my signature to include the kernel headers as well.

Kernel sources are on our github. github.com/hardkernel/linux
Branch is odroid-3.8.y

As I'm new to the whole git thing, what is the most effiecient way to get the source without getting the whole git?

Open the website.. select the branch and download the .zip..

Not that sometimes Github screws with the package and cause it to fail to build.

Hi,

I have downloaded the corresponding zip file.

I have unzipped it.

Now I have tried to make the program I am playing with using KSRC

and I get the following error:
# KSRC=/root/linux-odroid-3.8.y/ make
make[1]: Entering directory `/root/asterisk/zaptel'
echo "You do not appear to have the sources for the 3.8.13.23 kernel installed."
You do not appear to have the sources for the 3.8.13.23 kernel installed.
exit 1
make[1]: *** [modules] Error 1

So from what I can see, I need to somehow get the source for 3.8.13.23 exactly for this to work.

Do you have a config file so I can compile the scripts?

Thanks

EDIT: I didnt look before I opened my mouth..... The config file is there, I have to run make oldconfig, make prepare and make scripts. Silly me.

Thanks for the help

Hi,

Today I installed my second U3 from scratch with Fedora, but have X11 problems after kernel update:
* I installed the Fedora remix
* installed the kernel update via kernel_update.sh, rebooted
Kernel version is now 3.8...26
* but X11 doesn't start any more, the console is accessible
* executed the mali driver update script, but no change: if looks for /dev/fb1, but only /dev/fb0 is accessible
Even a symlink doesn't help, it doesn't seem to recognize this device.

I also noticed that the driver update installed kernel-headers for the latest 3.15 kernel, but X11 didn't work any more before this update.
So it seems to be a problem with the 26 patch of the kernel?
What's wrong?

EDIT:
I tried it again and it is reproducible: after the kernel update /dev/fb1 has gone and cannot be accessed any more (mknod doesn't help) and thus X11 doesn't start any more.

/dev/fb1 will be gone.

for now on.. on U3 HDMI is /dev/fb0 :)

Also the Xorg.conf on /etc/X11 might be pointing to it.. so you have to change it.
You can also change the driver to fbdev

did not try with Fedora, but I keep my tree here: https://github.com/mihailescu2m/xbmc/tree/Gotham-mfc
on Ubuntu 14.04 it works with the default X server, so I compile it with:
Code: Select all
./bootstrap
./configure --enable-codec=mfc --enable-libcec  --enable-x11 --enable-sdl --enable-xrandr --enable-neon --disable-debug --enable-optimizations --enable-ccache --enable-gles --enable-non-free  --disable-gl --disable-vdpau --disable-vaapi --disable-crystalhd --disable-openmax --disable-rsxs --disable-projectm --disable-fishbmc  --enable-texturepacker --with-cpu=cortex-a9 --host=armv7a-hardfloat-linux-gnueabi
make -j5

there is also this: https://github.com/Owersun/xbmc/tree/Gotham that also includes Odroid-specific EGL code in case the default X11 is not working - so this one has to be compiled in a different way, with --disable-x11 --disable-xrandr and probably --disable-sdl...

I noticed the following failures are reported in the kernel ringbuffer:

$ dmesg | grep -i fail
[ 3.449828] systemd[1]: Failed to insert module 'autofs4'
[ 3.856195] systemd-readahead[1356]: Failed to create fanotify object: Function not implemented

Please enable AUTOFS4 and FANOTIFY:

$ zcat /proc/config.gz | grep AUTOFS4
# CONFIG_AUTOFS4_FS is not set

$ zcat /proc/config.gz | grep FANOTIFY
# CONFIG_FANOTIFY is not set

$ uname -a
Linux ODROID 3.8.13.14 #14 SMP PREEMPT Mon Jan 27 16:44:26 BRST 2014 armv7l armv7l armv7l GNU/Linux

OK, CONFIG_AUTOFS4_FS has been enabled with the kernel-update.

However, please set CONFIG_FANOTIFY as well, it's four lines up on line 3534:

# CONFIG_FANOTIFY is not set

hello, I tried this and xbmc seems to build fine. but with one exception. the output of ./configure ... says that the PVR addons won't be build.
how can get the PVRs too? thank you.

Hello guys, Newb to linux here but learning fast. I was trying to seach the forums for the issue I am having and it may be something very simple. But I need some help.
I am running a Fedora 20 Image with KDE on Odroid U3+ with eMMC 32gb.

I currently have this Kernel (from uname -a):

Linux fc20odroid 3.8.13.28 #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri Oct 17 04:37:57 UTC 2014 armv7l armv7l armv7l GNU/Linux

I was trying to install XBMC and when i run it i got the following error:

MESA-LOADER: malformed or no PCI ID
libGL error: unable to load driver: exynos_dri.so
libGL error: driver pointer missing
libGL error: failed to load driver: exynos
ERROR: Unable to create GUI. Exiting

So I then went ahead and used the update Kernel script and Mali driver install script in this topic. However, after the updates, it will not boot. It hangs on the boot screen indefinitely. The only way to get it to come back is a reflash.
Maybe my version of Fedora 20 is not compatible, I am not sure.
I also tried to install the odroid Utility and got this when i ran it:

I couldn't identify your distribution.
Please report this error on the forums
http://forum.odroid.com
debug info:
LSB Version: :core-4.1-arm:core-4.1-noarch:cxx-4.1-arm:cxx-4.1-noarch:desktop-4.1-arm:desktop-4.1-noarch:languages-4.1-arm:languages-4.1-noarch:printing-4.1-arm:printing-4.1-noarch
Distributor ID: Fedora
Description: Fedora release 20 (Heisenbug)
Release: 20
Codename: Heisenbug

Looking for a little guidance but please keep the linux language somewhat straight forward for a Newb to understand. Thanks for the help in advance!
I love this board so far and want to get better at working with it!

Nope, if you want to use XBMC please the official Ubuntu image.

We don't support XBMC on Fedora
