U3 does not boot with new official ubuntu-14.04lts image

Unread postby Gaudi » Sun Jul 27, 2014 10:04 pm

Hi.
I have U3 (Community Edition) + eMMC8Gb
A couple month I used android only. Everything was fine.
Today I wanted to install linux. So, I downloaded latest official image for U3 - ubuntu-14.04lts-lubuntu-odroid-u-20140612.img.xz
To write this image to eMMC I used Win32DiskImager for Odroid v1.1 (this software run normally)
Then I put eMMC to U3 and swith it on.
I got only black screen on my TV.
So I turned U3 off and start it again. Now I seen white text lines on the black and then linux loaded. I tryed to start preinstalled Chromium browser. But it dosn't run. And I thought, that something is wrong with the image.
Then I started whole procedure one more time and write image again.
Now blue led-light brightness is low and it dosn't blinking.
TV says that there is no HDMI-signal at all.

I don't really know what to do now. Maybe you can help me?

Thank you!

Looks like that during the flashing the image got corrupted.

How did you extracted the .xz file ? Did you used 7-Zip?

Also.. what PSU you are using?

Thank you for your responce!

1. I've used WinRAR 5.0 to extract *.xz.
2. I brought this one http://www.hardkernel.com/main/products ... 4111972476

PS
This *.xz images wasn't visible in "Win32DiskImager for Odroid v1.1" before I rename it to regular *.img file.
Is it a mistake?

Thanks

1. Use 7-Zip to uncompress it. (xz is a extension like .zip).

If you renamed img.xz to img it will fail to boot.

Thank you very much! First problem solved!

2 problems left )

1. ubuntu-14.04lts-lubuntu-odroid-u-20140612.img.xz have lagging interface rendering. In the tread with this image, I've seen, that I need to install XBMC 13.2 alpha 1 (17 july 2014 git version). And I did it. Right after, I tried to restart U3 using power off menu from the right bottom corner of the screen. My U3 started to reload and stuck on the black screen. I tried to power of, then boot again and only that I see - it is black starting screen with white text and then only black screen without any characters on in. And nothing happend now. On the the U3 blue led blinking as usual.

2. In my first opinion, ubuntu 14.04lts is much slower than 13.10. (my needs are small - I need to use Chromium, something like Excel+Word, and I need to have internet via Ethernet and USB-flashdrive+mouse+keyboard support). Maybe I should try older build?

On the 14.04 image..

Try this and tell me if it gets better..

Open an terminal and run: metacity --replace &

See if the images are faster.

As from the XBMC let me know exactly what you did.

About XBMC. In previews 14.04 installation I just installed XBMC 13.2 alpha 1 (17 july 2014 git version). After it I tried to restart U3. But no luck. After this, I cannot boot up to the desktop screen. Boot process stuck on totally black screen.

I've rewrite 14.04. Now I have fresh eMMC with 14.04 image on it.
After "metacity --replace &" command windows dragging is significant faster!
Youtube video runs like slideshow with very rarely image refreshing rate.
Chromium works very slow. New tab opens approx. 3-5 seconds.

Yep.. I've noticed that issue on Chromium. On Firefox it does not happen.
So I think that the Chromium version on 14.04 is probably the issue here :( .

Did you installed the .deb of XBMC ?
It doesn't come to my head on why or how installing the xbmc.deb will break the os :(

Did you installed the .deb of XBMC ?

Yes. I downloaded this software to the USB-flashdrive (8Gb Transcend), then I installed it by double click and so on...

It doesn't come to my head on why or how installing the xbmc.deb will break the os

I think xbmc.deb installation does not break my system itself. I think restart function (process) does not work propertly on 14.04.

How do you think, should I downgrade to 13.10 version? Or there is maybe other way to solve a problem with Chromium on 14.04? Or there is some alternative image that cover-up my needs?
1. full functioning Chromium
2. something like Excel+Word
3. internet via Ethernet
4. USB-flashdrive support
5. USB mouse+keyboard support

Thanks!

Chromium works greatly on my U3 with the official 14.10 out of box with a Ethernet cable.
Excel and Word are okay with LibreOffice.
Most USB devices are working well. I think you should try to remove the Chromium and install it again.

Thanks. After new boot Chromium became much faster.

But now I'm experienced another issue - while I'm using YouTube Chromium randomly disappears. And I have to run it again from the left bottom corner of the main screen.
