Freeze after plugging in USB DVB-S2 device

Post by globalize »

Hi everyone!
I´ve been trying to get a Technisat USB HD DVB-S2 device to work with the help of the following How-To http://forum.odroid.com/viewtopic.php?f=52&t=3852 . I am using the official 14.04 release.
I´ve managed to build the required modules (with kernel 3.8.13.23) and encounter the same problem mentioned in the How-To regarding the "coherent_pool" issue.
Here´s the syslog entry (with the device plugged in during boot, only device relevant entries):

Code: Select all

Jul 6 16:42:38 odroid kernel: [ 7.638927] technisat-usb2: set alternate setting
Jul 6 16:42:38 odroid kernel: [ 7.639117] technisat-usb2: firmware version: 17.63
Jul 6 16:42:38 odroid kernel: [ 7.639123] dvb-usb: found a 'Technisat SkyStar USB HD (DVB-S/S2)' in warm state.
Jul 6 16:42:38 odroid kernel: [ 7.639600] dvb-usb: will pass the complete MPEG2 transport stream to the software demuxer.
Jul 6 16:42:38 odroid kernel: [ 7.639885] ERROR: 256 KiB atomic DMA coherent pool is too small!
Jul 6 16:42:38 odroid kernel: [ 7.639885] Please increase it with coherent_pool= kernel parameter!
Jul 6 16:42:38 odroid kernel: [ 7.649069] dvb-usb: Technisat SkyStar USB HD (DVB-S/S2) error while loading driver (-12)
After adding the boot argument to increase the coherent_pool to 6M and rebooting the system with the device connected,
the system freezes at a certain point and the blue led stops flashing (about 8 sec after booting).
I was able to find the following kernellog entry, however with no hint to why it freezes (last entries before freeze):

Code: Select all

Jul 7 19:50:29 odroid kernel: [ 7.427669] ieee80211 phy0: Selected rate control algorithm 'minstrel_ht'
Jul 7 19:50:29 odroid kernel: [ 7.428328] usbcore: registered new interface driver rt2800usb
Jul 7 19:50:30 odroid kernel: [ 7.921977] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready
Jul 7 19:50:30 odroid kernel: [ 7.922002] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan2: link is not ready
\00\00\00\00\00

The "\00\00..." bit goes on for quite a while...

The system boots up normal with the usb device not connected.
Connecting it results in a freeze and the following syslog entry (last entries regarding usb device):

Code: Select all

l 7 19:51:03 odroid kernel: [ 40.460419] usb 1-3.1.6: new high-speed USB device number 8 using s5p-ehci
Jul 7 19:51:03 odroid kernel: [ 40.565672] usb 1-3.1.6: New USB device found, idVendor=14f7, idProduct=0500
Jul 7 19:51:03 odroid kernel: [ 40.565680] usb 1-3.1.6: New USB device strings: Mfr=0, Product=0, SerialNumber=0
Jul 7 19:51:03 odroid mtp-probe: checking bus 1, device 8: "/sys/devices/platform/s5p-ehci/usb1/1-3/1-3.1/1-3.1.6"
Jul 7 19:51:03 odroid mtp-probe: bus: 1, device: 8 was not an MTP device
Jul 7 19:51:03 odroid kernel: [ 40.601491] technisat-usb2: set alternate setting
Jul 7 19:51:03 odroid kernel: [ 41.100286] dvb-usb: found a 'Technisat SkyStar USB HD (DVB-S/S2)' in cold state, will try to load a firmware
Jul 7 19:51:03 odroid kernel: [ 41.101850] dvb-usb: downloading firmware from file 'dvb-usb-SkyStar_USB_HD_FW_v17_63.HEX.fw'
Jul 7 19:51:03 odroid kernel: [ 41.168358] usbcore: registered new interface driver dvb_usb_technisat_usb2
Jul 7 19:51:03 odroid kernel: [ 41.283919] usb 1-3.1.6: USB disconnect, device number 8
Jul 7 19:51:03 odroid kernel: [ 41.284151] dvb-usb: generic DVB-USB module successfully deinitialized and disconnected.
Jul 7 19:51:04 odroid ntpd_intres[781]: parent died before we finished, exiting
\00\00\00\00\
Again, the "\00\..." bit carries on a bit...

At this point I have no idea what might cause this and would be grateful for any help finding the problem and solving it.
In the mean time I´ll try out different images/kernels etc.
Thanks!!!

Try 1M for the coherent poll.. I've had this issue on the past with a Wifi driver.. but I can't remember how I actually fix it :(

Hi mdrjr!!
The lowest coherent_pool value I had tried before was 2M....
Changing to 1M seems to solve the issue, but only sporadically
With only the dvb device plugged in it now takes 2-3 (re)boots for the system to start without freezing.
The device is then recognized by tvheadend and can scan channels!

Although it´s not a perfect solution it´s one I can live with, the system´s supposed to be running 24/7 anyway :)
Thanks for the hint!!
Keep up the good work!!
