Ubuntu 18.04 Desktop for Odroid U2 / U3 available
Hi everybody,
I created an image containing Ubuntu 18.04 Desktop available here: https://github.com/IOOI-SqAR/odroid/rel ... 308.img.xz md5sum: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/IOOI- ... .xz.md5sum
The image is suitable for 128GB microSDXC-cards (119 GiBiByte or exacly 127865454592 Bytes), I used a SanDisk Ultra R100 microSDXC 128GB Kit, UHS-I U1, A1, Class 10 (SDSQUAR-128G-GN6MA), which has exactly this size — hence the size of the .img.
If you don't have an microSDXC card of this size (it costs just 23 Euros here, so come on!) or you just don't trust me, the instruction are here:
https://github.com/IOOI-SqAR/odroid.
Have fun and please report back if the image works on the U3 or the X2.
regards,
IOOI

thank you for this image however i`ve never seen a 1.4gb image flash out to 128 gb is it mostly free space/unused space because of the drive capacity and so on...
however a 128 gb sd is going to cost me 50$ where i am so not so cheap i am almost trending towards a emmc considering the price difference..but still very awesome

Sorry, I had no smaller SD card lying around … but you could follow my instructions that I posted here: https://github.com/IOOI-SqAR/odroid, it's really not that difficult to do it yourself.phaseshifter wrote: ↑Sun Mar 10, 2019 11:54 amthank you for this image however i`ve never seen a 1.4gb image flash out to 128 gb is it mostly free space/unused space because of the drive capacity and so on...

I just installed it, it runs but I have no media to test if it is "smooth". Mouse stutters a bit …

Hi,
Many thanks for the great news, but I'd like to continue using eMMC modules.
Is it possible to make it work with eMMC modules too…?

Re: Ubuntu 18.04 Desktop for Odroid U2 / U3 available
I've downloaded and installed the image.
It loads ok but I cannot login as odroid because I don't have the right password. I've tried "odroid" lower case, upper case and leading capital.
Can you help please?

Hey phaseshifter, phaseshifter wrote: ↑Mon Jul 29, 2019 7:57 amcam you pls make a 32 gb image or even a standard image flash size..i cannot afford a 128 gig card...
sorry, at the moment I can't. firstly because I don't have a small enough SD-Card at hand and secondly because my odroid now has a "job" at the company where I work, so I can not take it offline to create another image …
but you can create such an image yourself, it is really not that complicated, the instructions are here: https://github.com/IOOI-SqAR/odroid , scroll to "How I did this" and follow step by step.
best regards,

If you need it, you have reduced the big image with 128GB to 4,38GB. I did it with PiShrink.

Today I installed the image on my U3.
It pretty much works, but I have no sound over the HDMI port and it hangs on reboot.
Anyone with solution on these issues?

Thank you @phaseshifter for the feedback!
Unfortunately my setup is too integrated - hdmi cable being preinstalled in the wall and no options to run a new cable... Will have to switch back to 16.04...
I guess it's just time to order a new Odroid H2, when it becomes available again...

I would prefer to run this off my emmc module. Is there an 18.04 image available for emmc on the U3?

I managed to get this installed on my Odroid U3 booting from a 64GB micro SD card following the instructions you provided. I am only running the server because I do not need a desktop interface. Thank you!

Re: Ubuntu 18.04 Desktop for Odroid U2 / U3 available
Hi!
After hard work I can run from emmc slot.
0. Burn an emmc memory with ubuntu image (you can use any one suggested above). I used emmc reader from Hardkernel to flash it (emmc to microSD adapter).
1. Boot using emmc reader in microSD slot. It works!
If it doesn't work, tried it before: viewtopic.php?t=969.
when i tried to boot directly from the emmc slot, the boot does not start. To resolve this, follow the steps below:
I followed the steps here: https://angband.pl/doc/u2.txt
2. apt install u-boot-exynos
3. wget http://odroid.in/guides/ubuntu-lfs/boot.tar.gz
4.Replace u-boot.bin from that tarball with /usr/lib/u-boot/odroid/u-boot.bin, the other pieces are ok.
5. Edit sd_fusing.sh, change sector numbers to those listed in
/usr/share/doc/u-boot-exynos/README.odroid.gz :
.----
signed_bl1_position=0
bl2_position=30
uboot_position=62
tzsw_position=2110
`----
I compressed my files and uploaded. Maybe it will help you. This is the link to download: https://mega.nz/file/aE5ilYQa#i9cskeNa9 ... NdVcqC-n20
Just download boot.zip, unzip and execute step 6 and 7. This file has u-boot.bin updated and sd_fusing.sh to fix the boot.
6. echo 0 > /sys/block/mmcblk0boot0/force_ro
7. ./sd_fusing.sh /dev/mmcblk0boot0
8. poweroff
9. put emmc memory in the slot emmc! No more sd adapter will be necessary!
reboot and pray!
If it works you can update to Ubuntu 20.04! Here is working now!
Good luck!

I used the image from https://github.com/hexdump0815/imagebuilder.
And I confirmed that I can used the procedures described here to make Ubuntu to run from eMMC for U3+.

Re: Ubuntu 18.04 Desktop for Odroid U2 / U3 available
Hi I have an internal 8gb EMMC module will this os fit on there. What is the maximum size sd card the U3 takes anyway.
How i understand and things have worked in the past is like this.
An os was available for the U3 you downloaded it and installed it to either an sd card or the emmc module, only taking up space for thee os, eg 1.4gb, then on first boot it would take you to a screen with options to prepare or format the rest of the sd card or emmc module so it could be used.
To have an os take up 128gb defies all my experience with Linux.
See this video around 5min on installing, setting up and running a ubuntu os. https://youtu.be/CcIXknkcNjg

The size of your full sd card you have should not make any difference. When creating your os img file it should only install the bass os size eg 1.4gb. Then on first boot it should ask to reformat the rest of the card for use.
See from 5min in this video .

Re: Ubuntu 18.04 Desktop for Odroid U2 / U3 available
Hi all I have installed this os on an Sd card it seems to work properly until I update the os.
after the os updates when i try to move app windows around screen they drag, I can click on some things and they work but when i try to do other things I cant even click anything to run it. it seems to hang up.
before updating things seems to work ok. anyone got any ideas on a fix.
I think part of the problem is that the standard ubuntu gnome desktop was used. the current gnome 3 and above seem to be allot more memory hogging and and take up more space than previous gnome versions.
I think a better choice would be to use xfce desktop I am going to build one from this minimal os here viewtopic.php?t=31765
after the os updates when i try to move app windows around screen they drag, I can click on some things and they work but when i try to do other things I cant even click anything to run it. it seems to hang up.
before updating things seems to work ok. anyone got any ideas on a fix.

I appreciate all who take the time to contribute to improve and help make things better for all.

Re: Ubuntu 18.04 Desktop for Odroid U2 / U3 available
Are the procedures in this post known to work with older Hardkernel eMMCs, does anyone know?
I'm using a 32GB Harkernel v0.3 eMMC and I haven't yet got it to boot from the eMMC card in the eMMC slot and I'm wondering about this.

Try this eMMC recovery process on your U3 first

Also consider try using this modern OS image if you are interested in.

I loved the Ubuntu Focal desktop backgrounds that I tried with the eMMC in the microSD slot from hexdump's imagebuilder repository.
I noticed that text in the terminal windows on the desktop was a lower resolution on the rhs of the window than the lhs, was the only problem I noticed with it.
I haven't tried it with my current HDMI LCD so there may be a difference.

Re: Ubuntu 18.04 Desktop for Odroid U2 / U3 available
I've tried the eMMC recovery process and although the u-boot prompt changed from Odroid# to Exynos4412# and the files were replaced, the version of u-boot was 2022 and the eMMC still wouldn't boot, see my postodroid wrote: ↑Tue Oct 25, 2022 11:10 amTry this eMMC recovery process on your U3 first

I decided to try to get the Odroid Ubuntu 16.04 image to boot from the eMMC card and despite flashing the image with Etcher, the u-boot version was still 2022 and the card wouldn't boot saying FDT and ATAGS not compiled.
I followed the procedure in the Odroid U3 wiki to copy the correct u-boot version from a micro-SD card install and the card now boots from the eMMC

I was wondering if it would be the best idea to try to dd the hexdump focal image using my C1+ card slot and then update the working bootpart from the U3 card slot?
When saw this post, having previously flashed an Ubuntu image successfully to my C1+ eMMC I didn't realise that an U3 eMMC boots differently and I used the Diskpart 'clean' command to erase it before flashing hexdump's focal image, which appears to be the cause of the problem.

Very weird. If you could see the Android robot, the Linux kernel in your eMMC was not for Ubuntu but for Android.
Anyway, glad to hear that the old eMMC module seems to be still working fine at least.

This is the boot screen, the kernel and what shows in disks.
The 4.2MB block device mmcblk0rpmb might be the cause of the Android boot screen because it's for OEM use and can't be overwritten by the kernel, apparently.

It seems to be very worth to try running "sudo apt install --reinstall linux-kernel-package****".
But, I can't recall the exact name of the U3 kernel package.

I wonder if you'd have any idea of how I could find out the package name, please?

I'd tried this and there wasn't a linux-kernel-package application, only linux-firmware and linux-base.
Would one of these be the kernel?

No. they are not kernel package.
I can't recall if the kernel package was included in the OS image or not.
What is the output from this command

There's no output.
Other than -base and -firmware there's only some kernel tools for specific kernels;- 3.4, 4.4 and goldfish only in pkgs beginning linux-.

If I was able to compile the kernel myself, I'd know what it was called.
I think I'll have a look at how-tos.
