Feb 2014: Change your monitor to a giant Android tablet...

Unread postby chumby » Wed Feb 12, 2014 9:30 pm

Hi all,

Great magazine... well done.

Just started working through the giant android tablet tutorial. New to most of this...but finding it great fun.

I would like to get touch screen working with the Pocket Rocket image (4.1.2).

Trying to locate the right kernel as suggested... am I looking in the right place:

4412/Android/4.1.2_Feb-12-2014/BSP/kernel.tgz

Cheers

I got an XU working with a Planar PCT2785 today - very nice! I will test it further. Click and swipe seem to be responsive, but I need to get to the Internet for some more multitouch tests.

A couple of issues, that I hope you can help with.

First In the article, it states "Copy the IDC files to your ODROID with the below commands.", however there is no commands listed below. What are the commands?

Second, when I configured the kernel with touchscreen support (which works), something broke with Ethernet support - it won't turn on and there are no active lights (switching cables with another XU with stock image works fine). What kernel configuration values should I be looking at to fix this?

First In the article, it states "Copy the IDC files to your ODROID with the below commands.", however there is no commands listed below. What are the commands?

There are two figures missing in that page, which will be restored later this week.

(Example IDC file)
touch.deviceType = touchScreen
touch.orientationAware = 1
device.internal = 1

keyboard.layout = qwerty
keyboard.characterMap = qwerty2
keyboard.orientationAware = 1
keyboard.builtIn = 1cursor.mode = navigation
cursor.orientationAware = 1

(How to copy the IDC files to Odroid)
adb remount
adb push Vendor_03fc_Product_05d8.idc /system/usr/idc/
adb push Vendor_1870_Product_0119.idc /system/usr/idc/
adb reboot

CNX-software already made a tutorial based on our magazine. I'm very proud of it! :D
http://www.cnx-software.com/2014/02/11/how-to-convert-your-hdtv-into-a-massive-touchscreen-enabled-android-tablet/

There is a much simpler IDC file. We tested it and we can confirm it works well too.

Note that, the IDC file is a pure text file and must be saved as UNIX format not DOS format.

Use the latest official image and BSP source code for the development.

Thanks for the IDC correction.

Do you know what could cause the ethernet dropout? I was careful to only change touchscreen parameters.

If you don't push the compiled kernel modules into your XU, some devices are not working due to different build date.

Thanks Odroid... have downloaded the latest Android image in your link... installed it on the eMMC memory module. Android all boots up fine on my new U3.

I take it that I now take the eMMC module out, put it in card reader and mount it on another Linux machine though USB?

I then navigate to those system driver files through Linux (Lubuntu in my case) and make the edits from there?

Or do I just keep the eMMC in the Android U3, and use the Developer options to get this sorted?

Cheers,
Chumby

There are 4 steps to enable your touch screen as described in the Magazine.
Which step do you try now?

Hi,

I am up to step 2.

Where do I find this directory on 4.1.2- kernels/drivers/hid/

Should I be using Ultra Explorer on my Android image?

thanks

The kernel source code and compiler should be placed on your Linux PC.
You must have a Linux(Ubuntu) PC or guest OS on the virtual machine at least.

Refer this full guide to setup your development environment first.
http://com.odroid.com/sigong/nf_file_bo ... php?bid=98

And follow this instruction.

If you install the Android SDK, you will have the adb tools.
All the kernel modules are stored in /system/lib/modules/
You must do "adb remount" before pushing the new compiled modules because the system partition is read-only.
The "adb remount" will change the system partition to read-write permission.

Refer this full guide to setup your development environment first.

Hi Odroid,

Am going through the development setup first as per your tutorial/link, but am getting the error below when I am running the command:

./arm-2010q1-188-arm-none-eabi.bin

Any ideas what i need to do to get past this problem? Been stuck for quite some time...

Yep... didn't find the package though - the 12.04 Ubuntu has it ok though.

I have finished preparing my android devlopment environment setup up to pg 93 of the manual in your link. I think that is as far as I need to go?

Can you explain the next stup.. pluggin the U3 in via the USB? Then editing those files?

Really appreciate your help,

Did you already build the latest Kernel and modules? Refer below link to double check.
http://dev.odroid.com/projects/ics/wiki ... show#s-6.5

If yes, it's time to enter into "fastboot" mode to transfer the zImage.

If you have the USB-UART kit, type "enter" or "space key" in the serial console terminal program.
And you can see the u-boot prompt.

If you don't have the USB-UART kit, try "adb reboot fastboot" on your host terminal.

And follow step #7.2 & #7.4 in this link.

Hi Odroid,

No havn't built anything yet... just tried to get the development environment set up as you suggest in the manual. I think it is all set up to build...

I am very inexperienced at this as you can gather.

What do I need to download from below? The entire img file - or just the source files (ie. just kernal.tgz).

kernel.tgz should be enough.
But your SD or eMMC should be have the same version as the source code.

Because we don't know the internal architecture of that software package you installed for the specific touch screen, it is almost impossible to know what happened.
Can you analyze their software?

Hi ODROID,

Getting there. I have downloaded the kernel, unzipped it and have changed the files as per the instructions in step 2.

Now Im having trouble with step three:

Typing: make menuconfig returns "make: *** No rule to make target 'menuconfig'. Stop.

or if I try the below from a your previous suggested (http://dev.odroid.com/projects/ics/wiki ... show#s-6.5) link... it errors as well.

6.5.8 ODROID-U2/U3

# make ARCH=arm odroidu_android_defconfig ====> ODROID-U2/U3

Let's start compile !

# make ARCH=arm CROSS_COMPILE=arm-none-eabi-

Any ideas where I am going wrong in step three?

Cheers
Chumby

EDIT: Fixed... need to navigate back to the root menu of the downloaded source code kernel and then type make menuconfig

Next issue...

In the config menu it wont let me change: HID Mutlitouch Panels to an embedded driver - says it needs to build this as a module only. Is this OK? I saved the file and moved on with M selected not * ...

So next I type the command, before I try to compile:
# make ARCH=arm odroidu_android_defconfig ====> ODROID-U3

and I get the error:
make: *** empty variable name. Stop.

Any ideas there? Am I on the right track?

Try below steps.

1. Setup kernel configuration. This step must be done only once.
Code: Select all
make ARCH=arm odroidu_android_defconfig

2.
Code: Select all
make menuconfig

HID Mutlitouch driver must be "*" not "M".

3.
Code: Select all
make ARCH=arm CROSS_COMPILE=arm-none-eabi-

That worked well and now it appears a zImage has been created. I will let you know how I go getting this onto the U3. I am presuming I already should have my Android image burnt onto my eMMC module in the U3 before I update this kernel?

You can push the modules via adb command after updating the zImage.

You need the USB-UART kit for u-boot access and a micro-USB cable for adb interface.

Read carefully the Section #7 in this link.
http://dev.odroid.com/projects/ics/

You can also try this mdrjr's guide if you don't have the USB-UART kit at this moment.
viewtopic.php?f=51&t=83

Note that you can debug the kernel/android with the USB-UART kit much more efficiently.

Yes... many touch screens are working like a mouse not a touch screen if the .idc file is not correct.

Hi ODROID,

I have adb working ok on the VM. I followed the instructions to push the kernel over to the U3: ie -

6. Copying the kernel:
adb push arch/arm/boot/zImage /system/lib/modules

7. Flashing the kernel from Android itself:
adb shell
cd /system/lib/modules
busybox dd conv=notrunc seek=2455 bs=512 if=zImage of=/dev/block/mmcblk0
sync
exit
adb reboot

and it seemed to go well... but I am not sure if it flashed ok? Is there anyway I can tell? How long should the flashing of the kernel take... for me the terminal prompt returned in about a second, so I am not sure whether the new kernel is flashed on the U3.

You can check the kernel build data/time information in the settings -> Device-information -> Kernel version.

BTW, we are checking the address of kernel image.
You may need to change the "seek=2455" parameter in the dd command.
We will get back to you by tomorrow.

Hi,

Yes doesn't look like the new kernel was flashed.

Looking at About Tablet > Kernel Version

I have:

3.0.51+
codewalker@codewalker-To-be-filled-by-O-E-M #8
SMP Tues Feb 11 13:19:56 KST 2014

I attempted the flashing yesterday on the Feb 23 - so I presume that should be showing as the date... not the 11th as above?

Cheers

So was that due to the dd command not having the right value?

You may need to change the "seek=2455" parameter in the dd command.

Cheers

Right.. we are looking for the right value now.
It may take a couple of days. Sorry.

BTW, if you have the fastboot connection with a micro-USB cable and USB-UART kit, it is much easier.

Hey Mdrjr,

Yes, you are right. 4412 platforms have the same offset.

XU/XU+E/XU-Lite has the offset of 1263.
Please update your How-to guide when you have time.

Please also note that latest Android on 4412 and 5410 have slightly more .ko modules.

Wow!!!

Tried the flash again and it worked.

Can confirm after this long journey, I have the Odroid U3 + Dell S2240T working great as a touchscreen.

Thanks for all your help through this thread... hopefully others starting out can use this as a base to get things going.

Cheers ODROID and Mdrjr + others...

EDIT: All seems good on the touchscreen... but cant get the WiFi or Ethernet going,

Tried three different wifi adaptors but no good. Doing the lsusb command shows the usb is fine.

I noticed an update at: http://dn.odroid.com/4412/Android/4.1.2 ... /ODROID-U/

Is this to be intalled on the eMMC to help with the WiFi situation?

Cheers,

Good to hear that you made a giant tablet.

Please read this thread very carefully.
There is an answer for the non-working WiFi/Ethernet.
You needed to push your compiled .ko modules into your board.

If you have the USB-UART kit, it is very easy to debug.. ;) I know you ordered one.

Anyway, I think we can close this long thread if you can access the WiFi.
If possible, please make a quick guide for beginners. ;)

Hi ODROID,

Yes, found those .ko files and pushed over to the U3.

Will do up a quick guide here soon, summarizing this thread and my experiences.
