[Solved] Screen color problem

Unread post by kevintyk » Fri Sep 27, 2013 10:08 pm

Hi everyone, my XU have some strange screen color problem. I don't know whether it is software or hardware problem.
On my X2, the screen color is ok:

However, on my XU, the screen looks yellowish:

Does anyone have the same problem as mine?

I'm using HDMI connection. I think its because the image was not so clear? its a bit hard to capture the yellowish problem using my camera. but the screen output of my XU really looks yellowish :oops:

If you have automatic white balance turned on on your camera, your camera will adjust all the colors to make your screen appear to be white, since it is within the acceptable range of "white" and is the largest source of that "whiteishness" in the image. If you set the white balance to flourescent and take both pictures again, there should be a noticeable difference if there is actually a noticeable difference in "real life".

If you are using a cell phone camera, then you may not be able to adjust the white balance. In that case, hold a blank white sheet of paper over half the screen and take both pictures that way.

Edit: just thought I would mention... My desktop computer does the same thing with my Samsung SyncMaster 2333 monitor... it looks like someone put a puke yellow filter in front of the screen. No amount of fiddling with the display settings (or color profile) in Windows will fix it. I can't remember whether it does the same thing in Linux or not.

kevin,

That's actually crazy, because at least for me... -X2 looks more yellow-ish them -XU...

Maybe some color conversion issue on the board/monitor? I actually don't know.
I'll probably have a new screen to work with -XU soon.. So..I'll take a look on that in a near future once I can actually attempt to reproduce that.

Now I can see that XU shows more yellowish tone.
It is time to investigate...

Hi odroid, thanks for your reply. Is there anything I can do to help you resolving this issue?

If you have a spare microSD card, install the latest Android OS image in this link.
http://dn.odroid.com/ODROID-XU/Firmware ... /SD_Image/
And check the color tone..

We will also compare the color of X2/U2 with XU on our TVs and monitors by early next week.

I can confirm this issue. I got the same problem on my xu trying latest android and debian images. See screenshot.

Using my "old" u2 with the same screen and cable, the colors are fine.

Hi m3730r, my XU screen looks exactly like yours. :shock:
I thought I was the only one that having this problem, and I was thinking should I send my XU back to Hardkernel for repairing. :oops:
Hopefully this issue can be solved by software update in the future.

Yes.. we also saw the same issue of yellowish color tone. ;(
Temporary solution is adjustment color in the monitor/TV settings.

We will try to find registers which can adjust the color of HDMI.

You can easily fixed it in android.
You have to adjust color range here is code from hwcomposer

Code: Select all

 /* "3" is RGB709_16_235 */
    property_get("persist.hdmi.color_range", value, "3");
    int color_range = atoi(value);
    if (exynos_v4l2_s_ctrl(dev->hdmi_layers[1].fd, V4L2_CID_TV_SET_COLOR_RANGE,
                           color_range) < 0)
        ALOGE("%s: s_ctrl(CID_TV_COLOR_RANGE) failed %d", __func__, errno);
so here is all color spaces

Code: Select all

enum HDMI_COLOR_RANGE {
	HDMI_RGB601_0_255,
	HDMI_RGB601_16_235,
	HDMI_RGB709_0_255,
	HDMI_RGB709_16_235
};
by default XU uses 709(yellowish) color space but you need to change it to 601(bluewish)
in /system/biuld.prop add one line and you have bluewish desktop

Code: Select all

persist.hdmi.color_range=1
in linux you have to recompile hwcomposer.
here is exynos5-hwcomposer.cpp from tools, so edit color_range to appropriate value

Code: Select all

 int color_range = 3;	// FIXME: default color range?

    if (exynos_v4l2_s_ctrl(dev->hdmi_layers[1].fd, V4L2_CID_TV_SET_COLOR_RANGE,
                           color_range) < 0)
        ALOGE("%s: s_ctrl(CID_TV_COLOR_RANGE) failed %d", __func__, errno);

It is very good that there is now a good explanation to the yellowish problem. I am not compiling the kernel myself.
Shall there now be an update to Linux kernel (for Xubuntu, Debian and Mate desktop) so that when I next time update the kernel, this will be already in there?

Great news!
Thank you Rmk117.

We will make a OTA image for Android.
It will be released by early next week after test.

I hope mdrjr will include this fix in his update package soon.

I've just updated the hwcomposer with the kernel-update script, and I can confirm that this yellowish issue is gone. Thanks rmk117 and mdrjr, you both are awesome! :mrgreen:
